I am usually a lurker on this board, and have read a bit here about Magdalen Berns. I found this and it made me feel ill it is so vicious and cruel. mobile.twitter.com/sineadactually/status/1314985057937956864

No wonder so many feminists are too scared to speak out, if this is the resulting hate, even after death....

@Quaagars - thank you for the Flowers. Today has been a very tough day.

Just "not in the same league as the death threats and drooling rape fantasies they showered her with"*.
Or do you think it is?

No, it's not in the same league as death and rape threats.
It still doesn't make it not abusive though, just because well these tweets/comments were more horrible than these ones so ours can't be!

MuthaFunka61 · 12/10/2020 13:27

@Ereshkigalangcleg.

It sounds as though Quaagars doesn't think that having a rationale for throwing words and accusations around is important nor do universal understandings of what a word means is relevant.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/10/2020 13:27

No, it's not in the same league as death and rape threats.

Thank you.

@Quaagars - thank you for the flowers. Today has been a very tough day.

Sorry to hear that, hope tomorrow's a better one for you

DidoLamenting · 12/10/2020 15:49

How many men do you tend to call "strident", Dido?

Oh this old canard that strident and hysterical are only used for women.

But since you ask it's a word I would use Scottish nationalists of either sex since they all seem incapable of putting their case other than stridently and in a strident manner.

EvenSupposing · 12/10/2020 16:09

I have literally never heard anyone call a man 'strident'. If they did I would think it sounded odd because it really is only used about women.

It's not a 'canard' if it's true is it?

Kantastic · 12/10/2020 16:09

Oh this old canard that strident and hysterical are [disproportionately] used for women.

Once destrawmanned, this is absolutely not a canard. These things can be measured objectively.

You may search the word "strident" in this blog entry quomodocumque.wordpress.com/2016/01/15/gendercycle-a-dynamical-system-on-words/ and the word "hysterical" in this paper arxiv.org/pdf/1607.06520.pdf (which btw is really interesting and worth reading even if you're not completely clueless about how sexist language works.)

KnightsofColumbusThatHurt · 12/10/2020 16:34

I think it says a lot that @Quaagars saw a thread about a dead woman being mocked by multiple people on Twitter in the most horrid way, and decided to make it about the one tweet she wrote when she lost her rag and told them what she thought of them.

Think about it, if this is how they speak about her when she is DEAD, imagine what kind of abuse they wrote giving her when she was alive.

But no, the real issue here is that a woman sent one tweet out of 17,000 where she expressed her beliefs in a way that may have overstepped the mark Hmm

Good work kantastic Always good to have a reference in the current climate of 'denying shit we all know to be true and which stares us in the fucking face all the livelong day'. Star

I can't really comment beyond saying your limited experience isn't evidence of anything except your limited experience.

The Internet is littered with examples with reference to Donald Trump.

@PurpleHoodie

Magdalene is something saddo's will never be.

Admired. Liked.

In death, she has achieved something these hateful bigots can only ever hope with all their living breaths and their last dying breaths.

To borrow the language of other contexts, she's akin to a martyr. A saint.

A jolly well beautiful woman who has sparked a flame.

Her detractors are not much compared to her and will mostly not be remembered. History books will not be kind to them. If they are even mentioned.

Well said
Quaagars · 12/10/2020 19:28

and decided to make it about the one tweet she wrote when she lost her rag and told them what she thought of them

Oh yes, it was only ever the one tweet what was problematic.
Everything else she said was fluffy bunnies fine and dandy.
OK.
Right.
For those at the back
Never, ever, have I said I think abuse is OK, and I also think those threats are vile.

EvenSupposing · 12/10/2020 19:58

Come on! You know that word is used about women. Why are you doubling down? What a weird thing to keep asserting. And I don't have 'limited experience' with the English language - I can assure you! Strident is a word used about women who assert themselves. I'm sure you have found that to be the case.

Old but interesting article

Highlight was that strident was used twice as much for women as for men...even though there were a lot more mentions of men

Cocothefirst · 13/10/2020 08:33

Magdalen was right. I wish I had an ounce of her courage.
