I am usually a lurker on this board, and have read a bit here about Magdalen Berns. I found this and it made me feel ill it is so vicious and cruel. mobile.twitter.com/sineadactually/status/1314985057937956864

No wonder so many feminists are too scared to speak out, if this is the resulting hate, even after death....

So now you do acknowledge that some people do absolutely think it's ok "for the most despicable of abuse to be rained down on them, even when they are dead" That's something

I've never once denied that there will no doubt be some people who send threats or abuse.
Also not once have I ever said that's an OK thing to do.

You specifically said, minutes ago "Nobody, anywhere, has said any of that is OK." Referring to women being "fair game for the most despicable of abuse to be rained down on them, even when they are dead"

So on the point, you were wrong.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/10/2020 23:08

I really would try not to make sweeping statements like "nobody, anywhere has said that's ok". Of course they do.

DoctorTwo · 11/10/2020 23:16

My favourite soundbite from Magdalen is "I'd rather be rude than a fucking liar". Sums me up too, ask my ex-wife and our children. :o

She was a bright star who shone brilliantly but was snuffed out too soon.

Quaagars · 11/10/2020 23:31

You might as well follow “So do I” with a “but”

Do not put words in my mouth.
There was no but after it.
It is actually possible to be disgusted at both lots of abuse, you know.

Aww bless. They really are getting a wee thrill out of mocking a dead woman, aren’t they. Imagine being so threatened by the legacy left behind by a female, that they can’t get her out of their minds.

I suppose, now that the public is becoming more aware of the underhand tactics used by the TRAs/MRAs, their hatred towards women/females, not to mention the evidence coming out on how children are being harmed by them, they need something to sooth them. Poor bitter little souls. Make the most of it ‘folk’, because it’s all going tits up for you. Tits, that’s something women develop, as they grow from girls into women, just in case you’re wondering. Isn’t female anatomy amazing?

DidoLamenting · 11/10/2020 23:35

The current attacks on Twitter are horrible and indefensible.

I personally found Berns' videos strident, hectoring and patronising. She does not deserve the abuse she is getting but personally she made feel the "gender critical" side was not a side I wanted to be on.

DeliciouslyFemale · 11/10/2020 23:37

Well, I thought she was smart, intuitive and brave.

Quaagars · 11/10/2020 23:38

WTAF.
People really don't see this as abuse towards a minority group?
Just.... OK.

How is talking about the wonder of how a female body develops, abuse? Seriously? If I discuss periods, child birth, FGM, rape, 2-3 women being murdered a week, by men, is that abuse? Or is it only when I talk about how amazing a female body is, that it’s considered abuse? Is there a list of female topics that I’m not permitted to discuss on a predominantly female site? Could you let me see it?

Sorry, not sure if you're being purposefully obtuse?
Of course that's not abuse.
That wasn't the context that it was just used in though, come onnnnn.

If you find the female anatomy threatening or offensive, you need to look at why that is. Don’t try to push your issues into me.
Quaagars · 11/10/2020 23:47

Did you actually read my comment?!
I said Of course that's not abuse
I'm reminded of the racism thread running.
Read my post again.
People just flat out refuse to see, or won't see, I just don't get it.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 11/10/2020 23:50

Quaagars, you are complaining over and over again about one sweary tweet that was rude but threatening or damaging in any way. On and on and on and on.

Yes it was rude. No it wasn't in any way harmful. I have read your repetitive comments. I have heard you. You are being validated. Now could you please change the record?

DeliciouslyFemale · 11/10/2020 23:50

I’ve no idea why you’re bringing race into this. It’s not very nice to use another minority group to score points. That’s actually rather offensive and racist, it itself.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 11/10/2020 23:50

... one sweary tweet that was rude but NOT threatening

Quaagars · 11/10/2020 23:52

Yes it was rude. No it wasn't in any way harmful

Accusing trans people of womanface? Appropriating blackface?
Not in any way harmful?
Right.
OK then,

Quaagars · 11/10/2020 23:54

I’ve no idea why you’re bringing race into this

because they're identical in the blindness

as I said

People just flat out refuse to see, or won't see, I just don't get it

DeliciouslyFemale · 11/10/2020 23:56

You just need to try harder.

Quaagars · 11/10/2020 23:58

You just need to try harder

Okay.
That says it all then, if that's all you take away from what I said.

testing987654321 · 12/10/2020 00:01

I don't think that tweet is representative of how Magdalen normally expresses herself. Despite being rude I still don't think it comes near to the abuse/threats aimed at JKR, for example. Given that Magdalen isn't around any more to comment on it I'm not sure what anyone criticising it wants.

Anyway, this has just prompted me to rewatch her video about Alex Drummond which is a treat.

NRatched · 12/10/2020 00:03

I don't agree with Magdalens tweet btw. However, someone snapping and putting something unkind, ONCE I can understand tbh. The fact that thats the only thing they ever send round, over and over, kind of proves that what she said on a regular basis was NOT hate as they claim, else they would find other things easily enough (to criticize after she has died)

I did once make a comparison between drag and blackface that I found appropriate though, which most agreed with but then a woman who was black said it offended her to have them compared in such a way so this is the only time I have mentioned it since then (though a few other black women said it didn't bother them, the one who it did was also important). As a white woman, it is correct that I shouldn't really have used blackface as I have no idea how it feels to be on the recieving end of it or anything, but I did not mean any offense by it and at the time it seemed a valid comparison.

I kind of question IF she was referring to 'trans women' as a whole in the tweet anyway, as claimed or the person she was replying to and 'people like them', being was she replying to AGPs at the time? That would kind of put a different spin on it anyway IMO, though it was badly worded.

Her videos make quite clear she had no issue with people wearing what they want and stuff. Yes, some of her videos she could come across as rude and abrupt, when replying to topics such as 'lesbians should learn to love penis else transphobic' shit. To expect 'be kind' on such a topic, especially from a lesbian, its just bonkers. Sorry, it is.

Quaagars · 12/10/2020 00:06

Her videos make quite clear she had no issue with people wearing what they want and stuff

Presumably as long as they're not trans, that is?
Then it sounds like she had an issue with them.

NRatched · 12/10/2020 00:09

Presumably as long as they're not trans, that is?

No?

Aslong as they did not claim that wearing 'womens clothes; actually made them a woman. And no, thats not the same as saying 'aslong as they are not trans', as oddly enough, may trans people do not think putting on a dress or whatever makes them a woman. Thats, transactivist logic, not actual trans people from what I have seen.

Given this was the reply to that, I am guessing you have not actually watched any of her videos?
