I’d like to believe that the person tweeting on the COOPs behalf is just someone who has a rather inflated belief in their own importance. Unless it’s a joint tweet by the SMT of course?

PronounssheRa · 03/09/2020 17:02

There is a reason why the spectator is growing, expanding and recruiting while the guardian is on the bones of its arse.

Trial by Twitter is part of the problem not the solution

Cailleach1 · 03/09/2020 17:11

Yes. What did Flora do?

SunsetBeetch · 03/09/2020 17:17

Flora's manufacturers decided not to work with Mumsnet any more

SerenityNowwwww · 03/09/2020 17:21

‘Flora tastes like candle wax’ my mum said back when it was ‘the margarine for men’ and I still agree.

JellyFishSquish · 03/09/2020 17:21

I recently subscribed to the Spectator because they have Kirkup, Murray and Shriver. I don't agree with everything but my goodness they cut through the shit that is out there. Well worth it.

Cailleach1 · 03/09/2020 17:52

Ah, K. Flora off my list. I have to find an alternative margarine for baking. I just add that I was never really keen on Co-op. Handy for a few bits insofar as they were around the corner. Just not very good quality, imo. Won't even be picking up those few things now.

To me, it appears that these businesses don't need very much prompting to give all their support to activists that have, at worst, an underlying hatred of women or, at best, treat us like an afterthought or second class citizens who don't matter. Misogyny seems to be so ingrained and normalised that people seem to think it peculiar if you pick them up on it. Just a shrug and then a focus on the people who matter. The male ones. Really, who cares about women?

persistentwoman · 03/09/2020 18:14

Eyes up my Co op card. I will email them telling them why I am abandoning them (local store) in favour of their numerous competitors on my High Street. I used them because of their ethical stance but evidently they're more interested in silencing free speech.

SerenityNowwwww · 03/09/2020 18:17

Ethical - what was it the coop banks old boss got up to again?

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 03/09/2020 18:24

Diana - I don't know about the Flora situation but I use Pure in cakes - delicious!

The week after I got 4 (!) free pots in my Tesco delivery, so some effect definitely happened.

I've converted to just oil - plain old 20p/litre vegetable oil. You do need to up the vanilla/orange/lemon/whatever flavouring, but it makes a lovely cake. Not that I make many cakes these days, my youngest has taken over that responsibility! (Finally a useful hobby!)

RozWatching · 03/09/2020 18:24

I'd forgotten about the crack fiend chairman. Did that inquiry ever happen?

nachthexe · 03/09/2020 18:26

See, now I’m in two minds. I haven’t used Flora since that debacle, but being an arse-end-of-nowhere gal, I was raised by the co-op. Is it worth one last farewell in honour of the crystal Methodist gag? I mean, I love that. It’s tickled all my word play bones.
Got my spectator sub though.

ChattyLion · 03/09/2020 18:26

Yes I am particularly fucked off because Coop have their own farms in the UK, were big on fairtrade, actually used to have some ethical credentials compared to other supermarkets. They aim to have best supply chain working practices above competitors. www.coop.co.uk/our-suppliers/ethical-trading
I want to support that. Why don’t they care about women?

nachthexe · 03/09/2020 18:27
noraclavicle · 03/09/2020 18:28

Still struggling to find a decent cake-making alternative to flora, mind you.

Naturli Vegan Block - no palm oil in it!

SerenityNowwwww · 03/09/2020 18:29

Butter!

Southwestten · 03/09/2020 18:29

@fatblackcatspaw

all the Col Bufty Spectator types who live deep in the coutnry probaby do shop there as the Coop has stores that the other supermarkets deem not profitable
Stereotyping much?
RozWatching · 03/09/2020 18:32

James Kirkup is a proper journalist. He saw that the proposed GRA reform was a big deal, and when people warned him not to write about it, he knew that he had to look into it.

EverardDigby · 03/09/2020 18:32

I became a bit of a convert to the Coop during lockdown having previously not been impressed, as it wasn't as busy as other supermarkets and they have nice lemony olives and I had some bread with cheese and chillis in it that was lovely. It would be a shame if I had to stop going in there again.

WildishBambino · 03/09/2020 18:33

Well "Alex - fold up toy designer" certainly seems to have a lot of time for making insults on twitter.

That's Alex Josephine Gwynne, a transwoman, who seems to spend their life complaining about women.

Just loving the ignorant stereotyping in this post.
TitianaTitsling · 03/09/2020 18:44

Spectator currently offering free trial then only £9.99 a month!

JellyFishSquish · 03/09/2020 19:02

What about the Co-op Bank? Thinking I should move my account.

SerenityNowwwww · 03/09/2020 19:05

My dad used to have one if his business accounts there. He closed it down for some reason (this was in the 90s). They had ‘done something’ he wasn’t impressed with.
