@SerenityNowwwww

Oh dear. Just saw the coop tweet where they called someone a Karen.

All sympathy and understanding gone.

No!?
DillonPanthersTexas · 04/09/2020 15:59

Love how the Spectator is sending out subscription links

merrymouse · 04/09/2020 16:01

I think in this instance the person tweeting was actually called Karen.

They seem to sign themselves Alice or Karen. There is also ^Hannah.

Divorcedatlast · 04/09/2020 16:01

I would be astonished if Co-op or any other major business called someone a Karen

SerenityNowwwww · 04/09/2020 16:03

Poor Karen’s (everywhere). It’s become a name that people assume is an insult (my best friend at school was Karen).

To be honest - some of the tweeters I’ve seen running large business accounts - I wouldn’t be remotely surprised.

I thought that on first glance, but I think "Karen" is the Coop Twitter person's sign off (may or may not be their real name) and presumably colleague of the initial responder.

I think it's ^Karen rather than A Karen if you look closely.

waxofffff · 04/09/2020 16:05

Andrew O Neil ‘banning’ an advertiser when they already said they won’t advertise anymore.

Except Coop seems to be rolling back on that stance...

DianasLasso · 04/09/2020 16:06

Oops cross post with many millions (got interrupted mid reply by DS coming home from school).

SerenityNowwwww · 04/09/2020 16:07

How was school - are they wearing masks?

Okay so far I think! No masks as yet, planning on introducing them next week for movement between classes.
MsWonderful · 04/09/2020 16:14

I saw the ‘karen’ tweet and it was definitely replying to someone called Karen. I had to look twice though!

BaronessWrongCrowd · 04/09/2020 16:25

Hope Alice thinks the woke cookies were worth it. I think that she may not be having the best of days and is probably up on disciplinary. I have no sympathy for her.

minsmum · 04/09/2020 16:36

The spectator have tweeted a link of their coverage of the transgender debate to the Coop

SerenityNowwwww · 04/09/2020 16:39

They are having fun then.

Never take on someone smarter than you, with more time than you, and kick ass lawyers. Or journalists. Haha.

Oh dear - someone wasn’t supervising the social media intern then 😆

Datun · 04/09/2020 16:52

Andrew O Neil ‘banning’ an advertiser when they already said they won’t advertise anymore. Jesus guys I know we are looking a bit desperate for heroes on ‘our side’ but there’s no need to fall for such blatant claptrap.

Oops, it would appear it's Coop who has suddenly become 'desperate'.

That’s escalated quickly and we want to set the record straight. The tweet sent yesterday was incorrect and does not reflect our advertising position. Our policy supports editorial freedom and you can read more about it here: coop.uk/3bs0jhB ^Fi

I wonder if the spectator will forgive them. Maybe they will be cut some slack because of the daft intern managing their Twitter account.

nachthexe · 04/09/2020 16:53

I had to laugh as even my very own Col Bufty (Hmm) dh announced to me this morning that the co-op have pissed off the Spectator in a trans row. Yes dear. I know. Was chatting about it yesterday. Grin
I’m hoping some other publishing industry types take note of the extremely firm editorial stance. Principles rock.
(And I am still laughing at dh)

ArabellaScott · 04/09/2020 17:02

The 'Karen' tweet was a Co op employee named Karen replying to someone. You can tell because they put the little hat symbol before the name, which I can't find on my keyboard.

Just as well, I was about to pull my Co op bank account and cut up my membership card.

This is a mildly entertaining object lesson in 'go woke go broke', though. I do hope other PR people are watching and learning. The tide has changed.

SerenityNowwwww · 04/09/2020 17:17

^^^ I have learned something new today!

Tootsweets23 · 04/09/2020 17:22

What a car crash. Well done Co-op for doing a reverse ferret, but my god they should never have got into this position. Very clearly it wasn't a rogue employee as most of this stuff is managed by an agency or call centre staff operating off a narrow set of instructions so it would have been escalated in the first place. Someone I the Co-op thought this a good approach and then it obviously went further up the chain and they did a U-turn.

You never accuse a journalist like Andrew Neil of anything without being on solid ground. Well done Andrew for calling them out - the spectator will be happy and they've had a good day.

I think this whole sorry tale demonstrates the febrile nature within companies and their terror of being seen to not be inclusive - this was one random tweet that triggered this, not a petition or campaign. I wonder if some corporates will now see that the emperor is wearing new clothes and they don't have to turn themselves inside out to every accusation and beg for forgiveness. It is OK to note someone's objections and not do more. You don't need to debase yourself in the process.

SunsetBeetch · 04/09/2020 17:27

Ha!

All the smug wokies in that thread trying to make fun of Andrew Neil look really daft now.

I thought Stop Funding Hate were behind it?
