If I am uncomfortable about issuing something on social media - and I don’t sign my name on them - then I take it up with my boss. I don’t launch in with both feet and make proclamations or promises. It’s just not the way it’s done in business.
I really don’t understand if whoever is responsible for SM (for quite a few companies/charities etc) just either doesn’t really ‘get’ PR or they just aren’t very professional so don’t train the staff properly. Or maybe they don’t hire people with without experience. They can’t even use the excuse that it’s a new media and don’t have training or understanding of how it works.
Quite often I see a very different tone on twitter than on the company website and other SM accounts, so it looks as if it’s handled by a different team and/or the rules are just very different (because they think the audience is different).
Either way - they need to understand the medium better and make sure that whoever is tweeting understands that they are representing the business at the highest level.
