As the Co-op pointed out they already have a policy Re: ‘stop funding hate’. It’s unfortunate that the person replying on the twitter account decided to change it without checking.

SerenityNowwwww · 04/09/2020 18:44

Wow. Have a bad day at work and make the nationals. Even I’ve never done that.

Tootsweets23 · 04/09/2020 19:03

@Xanthangum ah my mistake - I thought it was just that one person who tweeted them who prompted this response.

Nice to see Ben Cohen from Prick News is desperately using this as an opportunity to get more money for his dire shitty website (he's tweeting the Coop asking what pro trans publications they advertise with noting poor old PN gets zip from them).

DidoLamenting · 04/09/2020 19:04

@SunsetBeetch

Ha!

All the smug wokies in that thread trying to make fun of Andrew Neil look really daft now.

Andrew Neil is bombproof and completely uncancellable. (?spelling)

That's excellent Xanthangum

The #PenisNews parody by @jebrux has more readers and credibility than Cohen's original

I like this comment from the Spectator editor Fraser Nelson:

"I couldn’t quite believe that the Co-op would be so easily cowed by social media trolls, so I did contact them to check, but have not been informed of any change in their position,” he said. “We are living in crazy times. The Spectator has a 192-year-old tradition of giving a wide range of debate; the cancel culture, especially when embraced by corporates, is a malicious trend that no self-respecting publisher should tolerate."

PearPickingPorky · 04/09/2020 21:13

This has been a fun day.

Kit19 · 04/09/2020 21:17

I would have loved to be a fly on the wall at the meeting at the co op where they discussed this

...or anywhere else for that matter.

After all, no is a complete sentence.

PronounssheRa · 05/09/2020 15:52

It seems the spectator did rather well from this whole mess.

Following Co-op’s announcement yesterday that it would no longer advertise in spectator because of what it wrongly thought we’d written on transgender issues, Spectator added a record 550 new subs within hours. I hope there are other woke advertisers ready follow Co-op’s example

Excellent. There is a large untapped market for media who dare turn the tables on the tiresomely woke....

I see the Telegraph have removed their pay wall until Monday as a pro- free speech gesture after newspaper offices were attacked by Extinction Rebellion

They've also queried why the police supported a minority protest group against the principles of protecting property and freedom of speech.

xanthan that is a glorious response. Nearly made me laugh as much as when Miranda Yardley ‘transed the cat’
You gotta laugh in these dark times.

Brilliant. I think this might be another Important Moment. I hope so, anyway.

I’d like to hear Alice’s side of the story. I’m sure she’d say she was acting under orders.

I do suspect she has been thrown under the bus somewhat.

If I am uncomfortable about issuing something on social media - and I don’t sign my name on them - then I take it up with my boss. I don’t launch in with both feet and make proclamations or promises. It’s just not the way it’s done in business.

I really don’t understand if whoever is responsible for SM (for quite a few companies/charities etc) just either doesn’t really ‘get’ PR or they just aren’t very professional so don’t train the staff properly. Or maybe they don’t hire people with without experience. They can’t even use the excuse that it’s a new media and don’t have training or understanding of how it works.

Quite often I see a very different tone on twitter than on the company website and other SM accounts, so it looks as if it’s handled by a different team and/or the rules are just very different (because they think the audience is different).

Either way - they need to understand the medium better and make sure that whoever is tweeting understands that they are representing the business at the highest level.

Brill-iant.

Good question: What were the findings of the Co-op's 'investigation' into transphobia at the Spectator? No answer. Reverse ferret.
