Jameela and Josie backing away

I’ve checked as much as I can and apparently Jameela Jamil and Josie Long (I’m not sure who she is but lots of followers) have deleted their tweets supporting Mermaids. Jameela also seems to have removed her unpleasant tweet(s) to JK Roeling (I don’t think I’ve missed them on the searches) An interesting development.

Which larger charities / companies have been donating to Mermaids?

Like Children in Need and the National Lottery etc?

Cos THATS going to be interesting to keep an eye on.

lionheart · 11/08/2020 20:10

So Mermaids has now changed its spiel on puberty blockers?

SunsetBeetch · 11/08/2020 20:27

Tesco did recently I think?
lionheart · 11/08/2020 20:30

Ahh, thank you. I saw something mentioned on the twitter about it.

SerenityNowwwww · 11/08/2020 20:43

Tesco, Starbucks...

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 11/08/2020 20:57

It's since the BBC dropped Mermaids, isn't it? Very. Slow. Dominoes.

greennugget · 11/08/2020 21:00

I love Josie so much, but have had to step away due to her constant TWAW. not just kindly uninformed support, but the confusing and intense support that tends toward vicious and cruel against other than supportive of trans people.
She really influenced me a lot. I can literally draw a line between her comedy and humour, the kind encouragement she responded to my letter with, and the exciting opportunity I have this year. I had wondered if her having a baby might change her on the trans topic. We shall see.

Interestingly another lefty comedian after changing career to a scientific field removed the 'Mx' from her twitter bio. I am interested as to where she goes.

I hope Josie and Grace come round, I really like them in contrast to a lot of commenters here!!

JoysOfString · 11/08/2020 21:15

There must be a lot of behind-the-scenes arguments at the BBC - it's very clear there have been at Woman's Hour, and there are other clearly GC people there despite the route they've been taking in general. So over time as various things become clear, like the situation with the Tavistock, detransitioners, mermaids etc. those on the side of reality will be gradually more listened to I imagine.

Needmoresleep · 11/08/2020 21:23

I wonder if there is a documentary or something in the pipeline. The BBC got Saville wrong. Perhaps they don’t want to miss the big story again. And also the appointment of a new (chosen by Boris) Director General to be announced soon.

WeetabixBananaHipsterFFS · 11/08/2020 22:48

I got annoyed with Josie Long when she 'presented' a radio programme called 'Shortcuts' in her breathy, be kind voice. The programme absolutely epitomised 'Woke' - all style over substance and very few of the contributors had anythng real to say.

Ah, Josie’s Intolerable Whimsy Bullshit.

Woman’s proved an absolute fool.

Doyoumind · 11/08/2020 22:56

I hadn't realised JL had also deleted all her tweets. Or is there something wrong with my Twitter?

moptophairshop · 11/08/2020 23:34

What a coincidence - Jameela posted a tweet this evening to say she's taking a Twitter break!

ItsLateHumpty · 11/08/2020 23:50

😂

Opps. I actually meant to say That’s good. Everyone needs a break. I’m sure all that deleting to be more focused is very wearing. I’m sure she’ll be back soon.

On another note - I do sometimes wonder how much we alert our monitors to that would pass them by otherwise. I’m sure JJs support is unwavering and I’m sure no one that she does support has asked questions on the back of our musings here.

A small part of me hopes that Jenny Murray is giving some parting shot lectures which may be filtering through...

NeurotrashWarrior · 12/08/2020 06:53

Virgin money fund the residentials.

Which is definitely the dodgiest set up ever.

Redshoeblueshoe · 12/08/2020 09:07

I would ask what are the residential, but I don't think I want to know the answer

Haworthia · 12/08/2020 09:14

Can’t believe my comment about Kids Company was deleted. Everything I post in Feminism seems to get zapped even though I’m not trying to be inflammatory.

If anyone wants to signpost me to a place where women can talk feminist issues without being immediately reported by Mumsnet’s hordes of TRA lurkers, please let me know, because I think I’m done with Mumsnet.

Why is KC verboten, all of a sudden??
Haworthia · 12/08/2020 09:23

It wasn’t because I mentioned KC. I pointed out why they were the same and why they were different. The comment about why they were different was what got me zapped. Seems you can’t comment negatively on what Mermaids advocate for children, because you’ll get reported and zapped within minutes.

highame · 12/08/2020 09:35

@Haworthia I can understand why you'd be really hacked off but look at the bigger picture. Mumsnet is now worldwide and an awful lot of women are coming to this site. If Mumsnet is seen as taking action, no one can take any court action because it would be bad faith and futile.

I think they are protecting all of us in the best way possible and though it has looked unfair, at times, I don't know how else such a contentious subject could be moderated. Stick with it

You could try the new Ovarit site. It's the new home of r/gendercritical

ovarit.com

You need an invite code to register at the moment which I believe you can get by messaging the Ovarit account on Spinster or Twitter (if you have accounts there).

I'd bloody love that.

AvocadoBathroom · 12/08/2020 10:41

Jameela has been gleeful, vicious and shameless in her "close mouth open purse" statements.
I'd imagine she's been warned that legal stuff is about to go down with some of this and has been told to dissociate with some of it. It will be interesting seeing if she retains her links to MB.

Jameela can't take down Mermaids thanking her for the support though.
