It might be stupid in this job climate but I'm reasonably senior and I've just commented on someone's intranet post on why they've put pronouns in their bio and why it's a nice thing to do with a (softened, for me) counter argument (three, actually).
I'm feeling a bit trembly but courage calls to courage. I don't add much original thought here but I learn so much (though I'm good for a Times share token Grin) so thanks for making me feel I'm not alone.

DialSquare and moptophairshop i will join the delurker ranks with you, due to my sheer dumbfoundedness at redtrees' nonsensical posts!

In the OPs instance it was merely an employee posting on the intranet that they intended to include pronouns and why it was a nice idea. It’s not as I understand it any requirement of the company so people are free to do as they wish.
Yet you insisted that to express the views the OP did would be worthy of dismissal (without ever answering the question why). Which is it? Why are you now trying to downplay your contribution -or lack of- to this thread?

Winederlust · 19/07/2020 21:04

not even sure dumbfoundedness is even a word, but it expresses my feelings at this point!

moptophairshop · 19/07/2020 21:28

Hi *Winderlust, it looks like a good day for delurking! I think dumbfoundedness sums that up quite nicely, I think I'm running out of words to describe how surreal this whole thing seems. Like Dialsquare I've been unsure about what I can add to these discussions. I see so many thoroughly researched, intelligent arguments that resound strongly with me. At the moment the only thing I can add is another voice in support but I guess it's a start.

bishopgiggles · 19/07/2020 21:39

Hello to the delurkers!

boatyardblues · 19/07/2020 21:40

Welcome lurkers one and all! The importance of you joining in is to remind other lurkers and the monitors that there are more of us than one might assume, ready and willing to pick up the baton when other posters need to step back. We are many and, no, we won’t shut up.

Winederlust · 19/07/2020 21:42

I'm with you moptophairshop, there are so many amazing women on here who articulate how I'm feeling much better than I ever could.
There inevitably comes a time, however, when you need to put your own head above the parapet. I feel like this is a safe place to start, if only to help with formulating the arguments we'll no doubt encounter in real life.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 19/07/2020 23:25

Welcome, lurkers. Nice to see you all. Smile

DidoLamenting · 20/07/2020 04:09

Ibelieve somebody actually took a quip about interrogation as literal fact!

I don't believe that given what you posted that you would not quiz and "interrogate" your employees about their beliefs.

I doubt that keeping their views to themselves would satisfy you if anyone failed to actively embrace what you think they should. After all according to the wokerati "Silence is violence"

@NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace

Does anybody know a heterosexual male that would seriously see no difference between dating a woman and a transwoman?

Does anyone know a heterosexual woman who would see no difference between dating a man and a transman?

The last time I got lucky after a wild night, it would have ended 'unpleasantly' if we'd got back to this hotel room and I'd discovered that he was anything other than male!

Yes , me too. The thought of touching female genitals is revolting.
Siameasy · 20/07/2020 08:09

My work is male dominated and not woke. Diversity chief has put pronouns in his email but I can’t see white van man doing that. I would just simply refuse to do it - sack me if you want because I will be the test case at a tribunal.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 20/07/2020 09:29

Great article FantaOra and McDuffy - thank you.

miraloma · 20/07/2020 10:58

I'd be really interested to read your points. I've hovered over the keyboard a nimber of times and bottled it for fear I'd rant too far

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 20/07/2020 12:00

@HPFA

If someone wants to resist the trend but isn't in a position to make waves perhaps the following formulation.

"I will respect the pronouns of anyone who chooses to specify them but for myself I am happy for people to use whichever ones they prefer when referring to me. I will not therefore be specifying a preference in my E-Mail signature"

Nothing that anyone could possibly object to but makes the point.

Yes, good call but I would probably replace 'whichever' with 'the obvious' tbh.
MoreListeningLessChatting · 03/08/2020 19:50

I am person on my email.

I don't feel the need to specify any further than my name.

S J Brown (who cares really what comes here?)

@NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace

This......indeed I wouldn't be impressed and would feel conned that I was worthy enough to be told. Each to their own and all but I know what I like and want and wouldn't be impressed to get the opposite.

Honesty is so important
