"When you lie about what I believe about mental health medication and when you misrepresent the views of a trans woman for whom I feel nothing but admiration and solidarity, you cross a line."

Ugh, Twitter really is a cesspit. I don't have a Twitter account - even just reading the threads makes me feel horrible.

I hope JKR doesn't get too sucked into arguing with people on Twitter. I'm really glad that she is bringing these issues out into the open where they can be discussed, but I hope she can do this in the real world as well, not just argue with slightly demented people online.

Some of her detractors really seem to think that 'can you just...not' and 'silence, TERF!' are thought-out, persuasive arguments.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 06/07/2020 06:10

She doesn't. If you were on Twitter you would know better. Her tweets are reasonable, well informed and classy. That's why she's getting so much traction. She ignores the idiots.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 06/07/2020 06:17

@Blossom513

I clicked on the person JKR is aiming her tweet at and found out I'm blocked! Grin Interesting as I occasionally retweet and like tweets and not even any of today's ones yet. So do TRAs go through followers and retweets of GC posts just to block people? I wonder how many have blocked me! How amusing.
Oh my gosh I’ve been blocked by that person too. Honestly I’ve hardly done anything on Twitter. A few likes, and a couple of bland comments. I’ve not even retweeted anything. How the hell am I on a block list already?

Meh.

SunsetBeetch · 06/07/2020 06:38

Munroe has a bloody nerve, given her past homophobia.

billandbeninsanfrancisco · 06/07/2020 07:30

Blocked too. Never actually posted anything, just liked and RRd.

billandbeninsanfrancisco · 06/07/2020 07:30

FamilyOfAliens · 06/07/2020 07:35

Can someone please post the address of JKR’s agent so I can send her a birthday card?

boatyardblues · 06/07/2020 07:35

That Daily Mail article is very clever, as it appears to be “ooh, isn’t JKR awful - she’s drawn the ire of LGBT activists” but actually reproduces all her careful, evidenced tweets about the adverse impact of hormones on children in full. They also succeed in showcasing Munroe’s hyperbolic tweets with almost no comment. If you read the comments, it landed its points as if it had been written in an entirely different way. When the facts are laid out, readers are able to see the real story here. 🤷‍♂️

PushkarKali · 06/07/2020 07:51

The comments on the Daily Mail article are overwhelmingly in JKR’s favour. I think Bergdorf doesn’t play well outside the echo chamber!

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 06/07/2020 08:19

The Mail have many bad points, but stupidity isn't one of them. They know their readership's mind and they know how to write to appeal to them. Also, they have seriously deep pockets so can and do deploy a crap load of very experienced lawyers when needed. Both very useful things right now.

I know some people feel Daily Mail = Evil but they've been good on the trans issue and reached a huge number of people that the Times and the Spectator wouldn't.

(I will also always remember that they printed the names and photographs of Stephen Lawrence's killers under the headline "MURDERERS" and dared them to sue.)

They absolutely don’t. I can’t fathom how companies like the NSPCC or L’Oréal can’t understand that. It’s like they don’t even check.
Sexnotgender · 06/07/2020 08:26

@Prawnofthepatriarchy

Her work is changing things on Twitter. I imagine I'm far from alone in seeing a sharp uptick in followers since darling JK Rowling started tweeting.

There appears to be a flood of mostly women who've joined Twitter since June, outraged by the way she's been treated and, I'm guessing, looking for other gender critical posters to follow.

I've had a 10% increase in followers this week. It's exciting to see the tide of reason rising.

I’ve had a tonne more followers, I’m unfortunately at my 5000 limit though so can’t follow them back 🙁
FantaOra · 06/07/2020 08:33

I think those organisations are happy with someone with name recognition and aren't going to care if they are a bit dim with it.

Being completely shallow, that purple velvet dress is not flattering at all.

Yes, also on FB. FB suggests people to friend and I friend any woman who carries the banner I stand with Rowling. They always friend me back. Our ranks are growing.
TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 06/07/2020 08:41

Munroe's response looks very similar to narcissistic rage, though. I don't think many people would look at Munroe's response and agree it's proportionatal response to JK's comments. I think the Mail covering the situation is good sunlight.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 06/07/2020 08:44

I confess I laughed at one of the comments where MB was called “shrill”.

Being treated like a women isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, is it?

BewaretheIckabog · 06/07/2020 08:46

I don’t think Bergdorf is doing the cause any good. Having wondered why MSM is not openly debating this, I can only conclude it is the TRAs who want to keep this quiet. They are a powerful group and could easily spark open debate if they wished.

Many of us who are relatively new to the GC point of view are shocked by how much influence Stonewall and other lobby groups have infiltrated public bodies and education.

They know the arguments don’t stand up to public scrutiny and many people still think it’s about being kind to trans people. People are now beginning to understand the ramifications and impact of being kind.

They the majority do not really believe people can change sex and it’s why they are working so hard to undermine the protected characteristic of sex. There may be a lot of mind-blowing stupidity on Twitter and I suspect this is a deliberate distraction, but there is a bigger danger from those quietly pushing this agenda who know exactly what they are doing. Conflate sex and gender until nobody knows the difference.

I understand the need to take a rest and the onslaught on social media is draining. However, I have found writing to my MP, local council, relevant ministers helped me feel I’m doing something constructive rather than frying my brain trying to follow mad circular arguments.

AbsintheFriends · 06/07/2020 08:50

I've just had a look on twitter and it seems that Paris Lees started the hashtag #transpeoplearerealpeople and invited trans people to say who they are and a bit about themselves - what they like doing etc.

I don't think PL quite thought that through, or how it would play to the wider public either. Lots of young teen kids, who attach photos showing someone who is clearly a vulnerable, insecure girl with a short haircut (I'm Brandon, my pronouns are he/him. I like cats and drawing') or a guy with long hair who looks like they haven't seen daylight for a long time (I'm Katie. I'm 18 years old. I like playing minecraft')

It really does back up JKRs point about the need to safeguard vulnerable young people very effectively.

Xanthangum · 06/07/2020 08:54

What I watched in Hypno porn IMO was weapons-grade mind control and if a person watches it, especially if they were at a low point in their life, confused, stoned, are friends with a bunch of trans folks, they could be profoundly influenced to, for example, believe they were a woman in a man's body.

@JemimaShore what on earth is Hypno porn? I mean, I can have a guess given the context, but wtf?

Siablue · 06/07/2020 09:11

I think no one was disputing that trans people are real people. The one this this has done is put the issue out in the open. People are debating it. The TRAs can either engage in debate or it happens without them at we don’t get to hear it.

No one is disputed that they are real people and that we should be kind to them it’s all the other demands that we don’t get.

NotBadConsidering · 06/07/2020 09:19

On this particular point, Rowling is arguing that these ARE real people - real children - whose bodies are being rendered sterile, asexual and permanently medicalised, and the real people and children behind this need to be recognised as real people rather than pawns in a game of ideology that adults are playing out.

Kantastic · 06/07/2020 09:23

Does Bergdorf really have name recognition?. Their association with NSPCC or L'Oreal is much more likely to raise Bergdorf's profile than vice versa. I've never been able to figure out what Bergdorf actually did or accomplished to get so heavily promoted - is it just that there was a gap in the market for a black trans "model" and Bergdorf was in the right place at the right time?

Lamahaha · 06/07/2020 09:30

^ Exactly. I only ever heard of them through MN. In rl the name means nothing to me. I have heard of NSPCC and L'Oreal, though, of course.

I'm not sure that MB's contribution is having the impact on the debate that MB thinks it is. Grin
