"When you lie about what I believe about mental health medication and when you misrepresent the views of a trans woman for whom I feel nothing but admiration and solidarity, you cross a line."

Her tweets are an absolute joy. She’s brilliant!

JemimaShore · 08/07/2020 22:24

There is something fishy going on with her twitter account possibly - JK lost 100K followers overnight - and a lot of feminists I follow on there report their likes & retweets of her disappearing, and others report their follows/followers disappearing.

Very fishy - cos we all know Twitter has a "side" in all this. TRAs & men can send abuse & death threats to women with impunity, but say "a man cannot be a woman" and you can get banned.

HandsOffMyRights · 08/07/2020 22:28

Me too Quentin.

Even though I have questions around Audible right now, it is heartening to see JKR has two books in the top ten.

Sure she's gutted to lose those lobster loving teenage boys and bearded woke bros on Twitter.

chunkyrun · 08/07/2020 22:30

I just love her. Feel like lights leaking through end of a tunnel

PurpleCrowbarWhereIsLangCleg · 09/07/2020 00:41

My local radio 'gob on a stick' supported her. They're good guys - have had my students in on WE.

Acdcccc · 09/07/2020 01:57

I'm not on twitter very often so can someone please update me on what she's talking about re porn being tweeted at kids??

TheHeartbeat · 09/07/2020 02:12

Jk ignored those kind of troll-tweets because it’s best not to give them the attention they seek. They probably get reported and deleted anyway cause I haven’t seen any for a while now.

ItsLateHumpty · 09/07/2020 02:16

She has lost a couple of hundred thousand followers since this started.

I don’t use Twitter, but would she also lose followers if she blocked them? I can see why she’d want to block men sending dick pics, porn, and / or abuse.

She has a running set of tweets to highlight children’s art submissions re The Ichabod story, and men or transwomen (I guess because it’s not just men that have peni) are sending in dick pics or people are sending porn because transgender people / TRAs are not happy with some of her tweets in support of women’s biology.
lionheart · 09/07/2020 02:48

Those fabulous drawings and JKR's comments have been so lovely to see.

She is amazing. I feel as if she is turning everything around singlehandedly.

Lamahaha · 09/07/2020 06:51

I'm a member of a few FB book clubs with mostly female members and it was sad to see yesterday some avid reader or other bringing this up, and saying how disappointed they are that she's transphobic and a bigot etc etc. Obviously having only read a few biased headlines.
I did speak up in one case. Pointing out the difference between "all women menstruate" and "all people who menstruate are women".
The person replied with "but not all people who menstruate are women".
I posted a simple but mild rebuttal. I haven't checked yet to see what if any protest this caused. I'm prepared to come with tougher ammunition today.
On the whole, reader response was anti-JK with just a few sticking up for her. That could have been fear, though,

Harry Potter and the curse of cancel culture — why JK Rowling was disowned by a generation

This is amazing. It's like waiting for the HP books on release day all over again.

Does anyone else remember that scene in the old Secret Garden film where Mary pulls down all the curtains and sheets from Colin's windows in his room? That's how I see this.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 09/07/2020 08:20

Is it just me, or is this basically Puritanism? You must ascribe to the One True Faith or be hounded out of public discourse or be tried as a witch and burned? There must be something deep and strong in the human psyche for this to keep on cropping up - the Inquisition, the Puritans, Stalinism, Fascism, Mao. Some people can't bear the idea that other people disagree with them, cannot handle shades of grey, conflicting rights or any subtlety in debate.

They have zero self-awareness. Just like the aforementioned Puritans, who preached a gospel of love, bullied and killed people and banned much in the way of enjoyment.

HandsOffMyRights · 09/07/2020 08:24

Spot on Grumpy

Dances · 09/07/2020 08:26

Women's rights are the New Blasphemy

The are even passing laws on it in Scotland, where we could be guilty of 'Hate' for opposing the Trans lobby

SulisMinerva · 09/07/2020 08:34

That’s exactly it, Grumpy. They are the righteous ones, motivated by ‘justice’. Trouble is that these high ideals tend to translate rather messily in real life as history has shown us countless times. It doesn’t take long for the revolutionaries to become agents of injustice themselves although they never see it that way. They know what’s best and are just trying to save us from ourselves.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 09/07/2020 08:42

That Times 2 article is excellent. Love this:

Millennials tend to favour contrite YouTube apology videos that would have delighted Chairman Mao.

But have to say I think they've got the generation wrong. I'm 37, I'm a millennial. I don't think that cancel culture is driven by people my age, I think it's much more prevalent among the 20 somethings - is that generation z?

bilbotoy · 09/07/2020 08:51

Yes Im a millennial, it's the gen under us surely?

JemimaShore · 09/07/2020 09:04

And in today's news, they're trying to cancel ORWELL.

Well, I suppose they would, wouldn't they. They've been using his books as instruction manuals for years now...

JemimaShore · 09/07/2020 09:14

Getting a LOT of push-back, but it seems this one guy's ranting tweets (& lies) have got Orwell trending on twitter. Madness.
