"When you lie about what I believe about mental health medication and when you misrepresent the views of a trans woman for whom I feel nothing but admiration and solidarity, you cross a line."

I think the more ridiculous cancellations the better because it will eventually be the death of cancel culture as it becomes a parody of itself.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/07/2020 09:19

Is Brittany being ironic and sarcastic? I can't tell.

RedToothBrush · 09/07/2020 09:23

She has lost a couple of hundred thousand followers since this started

She's still got over 14 million followers.

It's funny how back in the day we laughed at the puritans who followed Mary Whitehouse and wrote outraged letters to the BBC about programmes they'd never watched but had seen written about in the Daily Mail.

We even had 'The Mary Whitehouse Experience' as a comic reaction to it (Two comedy double acts: David Baddiel and Rob Newman plus Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis).

Now its Gen Z who are the puritans. I largely think its because of the lack of agency in terms of more orthodox political power they have as a generation combined with a sense of huge entitlement and lack of awareness of the world beyond their social media bubbles. We watched the news as kids growing up as there wasn't anything else on the telly at 6pm. They watch what celebrities and influencers say stuff about the world and take it at face value rather than thinking about things beyond that.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/07/2020 09:25

And in today's news, they're trying to cancel ORWELL.

Please tell me you have links for this? Is it cause they've realized that he would have thought they were the baddies?

noblegiraffe · 09/07/2020 09:26

“The idea of 2+2=4 is cultural”

Now they’re coming for maths....Angry

JemimaShore · 09/07/2020 09:26

I'm afraid I think Brittany is being serious. Hard to believe - but everything from biological science through to George Orwell is now being described as "imperialism" and "colonialism". It's all gone a bit crazy.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/07/2020 09:27

Looking at the tweets above I honestly can't answer the question "stupid or some bloke named Sergei writing under a pseudonym who's probably not being paid enough for this bollocks".

Deliriumoftheendless · 09/07/2020 09:29

Give it time and most of those tutting are JK will be saying “I was always on her side.”

Long term there will be a lot of people who won’t touch the TRA movement with a shitty stick.

I’m hoping there’s enough sensible enough to separate out yer average trans person from the online arseholes (who may or may not even be trans in some cases) and we might get somewhere as a species.

BubblegumFactory · 09/07/2020 09:30

Is JKR on here I wonder?
I’d like to think that she can read the overwhelming admiration that we have over here for her. I know she gets lots of support on Twitter but you have to wade through so much venom over there to see the supportive comments.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/07/2020 09:31

I hope that someone is screen-shotting the bollocks and collecting it for evidence and posterity. It might make useful examples of batshittery when contacting individuals or organisations!

JemimaShore · 09/07/2020 09:39

It's a fad, isn't it? The whole TRA thing, cancel culture - it's a crazy whirlwind we're just going to have to wait for the storm to blow over us, until they all literally cancel themselves and we can all get back to normal. Grin

They can't cancel Orwell, or actual scientific facts, or maths....

Lamahaha · 09/07/2020 09:42

But have to say I think they've got the generation wrong. I'm 37, I'm a millennial. I don't think that cancel culture is driven by people my age, I think it's much more prevalent among the 20 somethings - is that generation z?

Agreed. My kids are Millennials and they are vehemently GC. But then they have daughters and have had to grow up...

JemimaShore · 09/07/2020 09:44

Incidentally, since the lockdown homeschooling started, I've been listening to DD's lessons.

Just so happens her English (yr 7) has been on dystopian novels. They've covered 1984, Animal Farm, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Brave New World, The Time Machine.

He's really gone into detail about fake news, and the tools totalitarian regimes use too - asking them to find the signs of how authoritarianism works etc. Really good stuff. I've enjoyed it more than she has - school is wasted on the young Grin

Then I go on twitter - and I think all these people must have just been absent from this sort of education.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/07/2020 09:49

or maths....

Apparently 2+2 does not equal four in some number systems ... or so a pure mathematician once told me enthusiastically. This has nothing to do with cultural context, though.

I can't do maths. I wish I could. But I love how much of its history came from the Islamic world. I'm old and I knew this even as a child because one of my parents was from a part of the world that had some Islamic heritage.

It's that sort of thing that is actually important to me. Emphasising that much of what we know as maths and astronomy and so on had its heritage in what is now the middle-east and the Indian subcontinent (as well as ancient Greece).

AbsintheFriends · 09/07/2020 09:52

I see from Jemima's screenshot that Brittany (she/her, 2+2=4 is 'cultural') also describes herself as a 'wannabe math person.'

QuentinWinters · 09/07/2020 10:03

Apparently 2+2 does not equal four in some number systems ... or so a pure mathematician once told me enthusiastically. This has nothing to do with cultural context, though.
Yeah, my maths brain boyfriend explained how that works to me. It's an esoteric maths proof thing though, not really saying you can just decide 2+2=5 a la Orwell.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/07/2020 10:10

It's funny how in advocating for a 'post-truth world' our TRA friends as well as the loony-left in general seem to share a commonality with Trump.

ItsLateHumpty · 09/07/2020 10:15

Apparently 2+2 does not equal four in some number systems ...

2 + 2 = 10 if the base is 4

Apparently.

Twitter is sometimes useful Grin

AbsintheFriends · 09/07/2020 10:18

It's an esoteric maths proof thing

In other words, it's about as relevant as clownfish, seahorses and gay penguins?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/07/2020 10:21

In other words, it's about as relevant as clownfish, seahorses and gay penguins?

Relevant to what? Maths can be beautiful (so I am told) even if it is not 'relevant'. So are dead languages. Even before cancel culture there were branches of the arts and humanities deemed 'irrelevant' and not worth public support and funding.

CaveMum · 09/07/2020 10:23

She’s on fire now, and she’s pissed. Keep going JKR!

Bubblegum I’d like to think she is on here, at least following and reading if not actively posting. She said she went away and did her research, what better place to gauge the thoughts and opinions of the “average woman in the street” than Mumsnet?

AbsintheFriends · 09/07/2020 10:24

Relevant to what?

To the argument that sex isn't binary.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/07/2020 10:27

To the argument that sex isn't binary

Oh, I'm sorry - shall I report myself to the thread police for an unacceptable drift?

HandsOffMyRights · 09/07/2020 10:29

I live in hope that most women my age (47) understand. Then I saw the tweet from the band 'Garbage' yesterday and despair.

I had naively assumed that Shirley Manson would get it, but the tweet was awful.

HandsOffMyRights · 09/07/2020 10:31

Here's the tweet:

'To the terfs and the other loser transphobes:
You are not welcome here. Your desire to kneel on other peoples necks will not be tolerated.'
