This is thrilling! I am so grateful for another famous voice to help question the nonsense. The more the merrier, indeed.

SistemaAddict · 19/06/2020 08:58

Loving it. I watched the Loretta sketch with my dds a year or so ago. Hilarious but scarily prophetic.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 19/06/2020 09:01

I hate to say it, but this is Part of what we need, high profile men with no skin in the game, rich enough not to give two fucks and who appeal to other middle aged men who will go “wtf?” And start talking about it.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 19/06/2020 09:04

"Symbolic of his struggle against reality" 😁

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 19/06/2020 09:09

So many years since I saw Life of Brian and that clip...it’s everything!!

dementedma · 19/06/2020 09:13

Perfect. Go Mr Cleese. And thank you.

SiaPR · 19/06/2020 09:14

@teawamutu

Something in the tone of his questions, and the ones he chooses to quote tweet, is giving me a vibe that he knows the answers already.
Yes, of course he does. Everyone does.
AnyFucker · 19/06/2020 09:15

Keep going, John. Keep going.

ArriettyJones · 19/06/2020 09:18

@Cwenthryth

“symbolic of his struggle against reality”, indeed!
I wonder if he’ll repurpose that line on Newsnight before this is all over? I would love that.

It’s great that he’s spoken up. Smile

AreYouSiriusLupin · 19/06/2020 09:22

Thank you, John. Now let's keep this going!

BacklashStarts · 19/06/2020 09:23

Agree, it has to be something everyone is saying WTF about and not seen as a niche ‘disagreement’

Kantastic · 19/06/2020 09:24

John, you’re acting “radicalised”. This “just asking a question” on Twitter, when you could easily do some real life checking with experts instead is pretty transparent.

This response to him, can it be serious? Looks it, but they're openly calling people "radicalised" just for asking mildly worded questions now? Those anti-trans radicals with their questions and their quizzical eyebrows! Literally killing trans women!

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 19/06/2020 09:24

Yeah, he’s not stupid, he’s not gone into it blind, he knows exactly what he said.

OliveKitteridgeAgain · 19/06/2020 09:26

It's about time one of the older Harry Potter alumni spoke up. They all got a nice career boost, worldwide recognition from a new younger audience and forever legendary status as an HP character. All off the back of JKR. I am hoping Robbie Coltrane et all grow a pair now the mighty Cleese has spoken.

jakeyboy1 · 19/06/2020 09:27

I think recent events have made comedians think "what the fuck can I say" so hopefully a few more of them will join in. I saw Robert Webb gently skirt into the JK Rowling situation, didn't say anything about trans but picked up on the domestic abuse.

ChattyLion · 19/06/2020 09:28

Good on John Cleese. This politics affects everyone so it’s good he is asking sensible questions about it publicly.

I totally missed that the NHS had changed their info on puberty blockers. So they have added some evidenced points to their original purely political statement, which erased the risks and unknowns to kids taking these powerful drugs off-label.

WHY? why do these organisations neglect their own duties and responsibilities to repeat a party line like that? What are they gaining or avoiding by doing that? If they gave an actual shit about children and young people they would never do that. It’s shocking. we don’t give kids cosmetic surgery but we do give cosmetic drugs to very young kids and which apparently have arguably much further-reaching physically effects like on bone density and lower IQ and so on than straightforward surgery would do.

Anyway it’s great the NHS have changed it at last and that’s huge. you can see the changes here for anyone else who missed it:

Good article from James Kirkup

Beamur · 19/06/2020 09:28

I think the Loretta sketch shows John 'got this' a very long time ago.

MaMaLa321 · 19/06/2020 09:29

there was a recent thread where David Mitchell might (or might not) have hinted at GC views. This just shows up the cowardice of him, and all the other left wing comedians.

ChattyLion · 19/06/2020 09:30

Agree this is an issue for everyone to speak up on if they safely can. Which particularly applies to men on Twitter.

jakeyboy1 · 19/06/2020 09:33

@mamala321
Having rewatched Peep show recently I'm amazed it hasn't come in for the bandwagon criticism as per Little Britain there are some
real cringe moments in it.

Like what?

The bloody nerve! But agree that he knows what he's doing. He reminds me of my dad. Common sense, old school!
jakeyboy1 · 19/06/2020 09:45

@siapr few comments at Johnson that could be taken either way. Obviously it never held itself up as a politically correct show so there is a fair few cringe moments but watching last week we both commented it was sailing close to the wind a couple of times. I imagine there are a number of comedians/writers worrying if their work will be singled out next - and whether they respond to that or speak up on any other issues I think will be interesting, as I said Webb skirted by the JK issue very carefully not getting into trans.

crazychemist · 19/06/2020 09:46

But you haven't got a womb, Reg!

hypernormal · 19/06/2020 10:02

I absolutely LOVE John Cleese so I'm so glad he's commented on this. I pity the fool who messes with him!
