www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/jameela-jamil-comes-out-queer-amid-criticism-her-role-hbo-n1131141

“Actress Jameela Jamil formally came out as queer Wednesday in response to critics who attacked her role in a new HBO Max competition series, claiming her judging a voguing show wouldn't be representative of the black LGBTQ community in which voguing originated.”

And it seems the community are doubting her motivations, with IW questioning if she is in fact queer as she has a boyfriend (linked below), who then comes under fire themselves for bisexual, pansexual, etc. ‘erasure’.

I had to look up ‘queer’ to understand how Jameela was applying that label, so looked up PinkNews. Not terribly helpful but in essence “queer has become a useful umbrella term for some sexual and gender minorities who do not fit into the traditional categories around gender identity and sexual orientation.”
From Twitter I read it as “It’s usually an umbrella term for LGBT+ when someone doesn't want to disclose their sexuality/can't identify with a singular label but knows they aren't straight.”

Here you go, Twitter falls for it. SHE’S GOT A BOYFRIEND. You don’t think it’s odd she comes out as “queer” after being criticised for possibly taking a gay person’s place on a show? #Mugs #Coincidence #Gayface

I was also interested to learn the origin of vogue “Many felt that despite Jamil's comments, her place as a judge was inappropriate as voguing has its roots in the LGBTQ community. The dance style was part of drag competitions popularized by queer people of color and became ingrained in the community's culture.”

I am saddened that Jameela as a woman of colour has to take a third label to qualify for being a judge, and it seems a turf war could be breaking out.
Could this be the start of the backlash within the LGBTQI+ as the umbrella is now so vast, virtually all of us stand under it?

So, IW is upset when a woman uses words to describe herself which are not objectively true. Welcome to our world!

*objectively true is a bit hard to assess for the word queer as it seems to mean whatever you want it to mean.

NotTerfNorCis · 06/02/2020 07:31

Just been trying to understand what's going on here. It's all over Twitter.

Arch-woke person Jameela attacked for being a 'cis lady' and 'transphobic'.

What does queer mean anyway? There's already bisexual, lesbian and pansexual. Does queer mean she's heterosexual, but potentially attracted to transwomen?

MadamBatty · 06/02/2020 07:32

Attention seeking twonk

Lordfrontpaw · 06/02/2020 07:33

She - well, she has been pretty vocal and unpleasant to people on social media. She didn’t come across as very nice.

They always get bitten on the bum through don’t they?

Langsdestiny · 06/02/2020 07:34

That's surely satire from India.

Beamur · 06/02/2020 07:35

I wonder if Jameela is about to find out you can never be too woke.
But frankly, if she is het this is appropriation.

Lordfrontpaw · 06/02/2020 07:36

Does that mean that Madonna can’t sing Vogue anymore (thanks god for that)?

TanquerayTickles · 06/02/2020 07:44

Gayface? Did India type that with a straight face and not see the irony?

Jameela Jamil was always going to be hung by her own petard eventually. She jumped the shark when she told people not to use the words blind spot as it's ableist...

Oh sincere.apologies @Langsdestiny
I've been an idiot and.presumed you were commenting on JJ's race...sorry! My fault. Been lots on news so made me hyper alert..forgive me.

This all sounds a bit familiar:

ItsLateHumpty · 06/02/2020 07:58

Yes CharryLion I'd agree that this is very much an example of purity spirals.

IW has pissed off bi, pan, NB, etc people by saying that Jameela can't be queer because she has a boyfriend.

Jameela has pissed off some in the community because she's 'appropriating' their struggles Hmm

And her fans are pissed off with some in the community because she's been 'forced' to come out.

The snake is eating it's own tail.

Anyone can always be out-woked, out-queered, out-pomo’d because it’s all undefinable, subjective made-up bullshit rubbish. This is the obvious end result if we build social contracts on unverifiable feelings and self-declared identities, rather than objective facts and provable reality. It’s the ultimate fake news.

Jameela Jamil comes across as exceedingly intolerant on Twitter, constantly lecturing people on what they should and shouldn’t say/do. It is vaguely amusing in a schadenfreude way to see her turned upon (virtually) by the wokesters she has been seemingly so desperate to win approval from all this time. She’s a good comic actress though, I did like her character in The Good Place, thought she was very well done, and loved what they did with her in the final episode - won’t post spoilers! But it does cross my mind occasionally that maybe it’s all elaborate performance art to see how far she could go.

CallofDoodee · 06/02/2020 08:18

Ha ha!

Do you know what, let them eat each other. Queer this, apporiation that, check your privilege this, stay in your lane that.

I am glad that we are getting somewhere with rights for gay people and BAME people, but this whole oppression Olympics thing, where people have to ensure that they have the correct label in order to be able to say anything at all must just be exhausting for these people.

What does she even mean by 'queer' anyway? I'm assuming bisexual, given she is female and has been in a relationship with a bloke for quite a while....why doesn't she just say 'bisexual'?

Its such a shame she has gone this way - she has done some great things in the past with the 'I Weigh' campaign (although she had a spat with another blogger about that as this other blogger claimed she nicked her idea) and also talking about feminist issues such as abortion. She has just completely out-woked herself, and these people don't realise that to most of the world they just come across as ridiculous.

CallofDoodee · 06/02/2020 08:21

Sorry but that made me chuckle!

MintyMabel · 06/02/2020 08:23

She is hideously attacked on twitter. If she is unpleasant to people it is in response to that.

ItsLateHumpty · 06/02/2020 08:25

Opps I'm not sure who CharryLion is from my last comment. Autocucumber obvs likes to undermine me when I hit post.
Sorry ChattyLion 🤦‍♀️

Sadly you could say the same of ‘woman’ at the mo.

Cwenthryth · 06/02/2020 08:28

Whatever happened to treat people how you’d like to be treated? Two wrongs don’t make a right?

I don’t follow her closely, but haven’t seen her be ‘hideously attacked’ (which is a fairly violent way to describe people writing words on a screen), I have seen many people disagree with her posts though. And some complete misunderstandings as well, which just made her opponents look daft.

Lordfrontpaw · 06/02/2020 08:30

I’ve only seen her being attacked in response to her school head girl lectures, gender nonsense and her throwing insults at other people. Not that I follow her (she just pops up now and again telling people what to do/think).

NotTerfNorCis · 06/02/2020 08:31

'Queer' when used by women often means:

Attracted to women but doesn't like the word lesbian.

Or, heterosexual and in a relationship with a man who identifies as a woman.

ItsLateHumpty · 06/02/2020 08:42

It's a shame that she feels the need to adopt a label at all in order to justify being a judge on a voguing show.

Whatever your personal thoughts of her are, why is being a woman of colour not enough?

I don't know enough about the show - are all the contestants and judges etc always BAME / LGBTQI+?

OP posts:
Kit19 · 06/02/2020 08:43

oh i did laugh when i read this and thought it was a perfect example of a purity spiral in action

the frustrating this is I agree with a lot of what she says about body image and woman shaming and all that but then she also supports Danielle 'suck my dick' Muscato

I do not understand how she simultaneously both does and does not know what a woman is

HandsOffMyLangCleg · 06/02/2020 08:45

Oh yes, Miley Cyrus came out as queer when she got married.
and she cut her hair short.

It is very en vogue.

Lordfrontpaw · 06/02/2020 08:45

I always thought that Q referred to males and not females. Well it was in my day when it was an insult.

I would have thought a dancer or choreographer should judge a dance show surely? Colour, sex and sexuality doesn’t really matter.
