www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/jameela-jamil-comes-out-queer-amid-criticism-her-role-hbo-n1131141

“Actress Jameela Jamil formally came out as queer Wednesday in response to critics who attacked her role in a new HBO Max competition series, claiming her judging a voguing show wouldn't be representative of the black LGBTQ community in which voguing originated.”

And it seems the community are doubting her motivations, with IW questioning if she is in fact queer as she has a boyfriend (linked below), who then comes under fire themselves for bisexual, pansexual, etc. ‘erasure’.

I had to look up ‘queer’ to understand how Jameela was applying that label, so looked up PinkNews. Not terribly helpful but in essence “queer has become a useful umbrella term for some sexual and gender minorities who do not fit into the traditional categories around gender identity and sexual orientation.”
From Twitter I read it as “It’s usually an umbrella term for LGBT+ when someone doesn't want to disclose their sexuality/can't identify with a singular label but knows they aren't straight.”

Here you go, Twitter falls for it. SHE’S GOT A BOYFRIEND. You don’t think it’s odd she comes out as “queer” after being criticised for possibly taking a gay person’s place on a show? #Mugs #Coincidence #Gayface

I was also interested to learn the origin of vogue “Many felt that despite Jamil's comments, her place as a judge was inappropriate as voguing has its roots in the LGBTQ community. The dance style was part of drag competitions popularized by queer people of color and became ingrained in the community's culture.”

I am saddened that Jameela as a woman of colour has to take a third label to qualify for being a judge, and it seems a turf war could be breaking out.
Could this be the start of the backlash within the LGBTQI+ as the umbrella is now so vast, virtually all of us stand under it?

The hypocrisy is breathtaking as well.

The people who are horrified that JJ (pre 'coming out' Hmm) was taking the place of a LGBTQ+ person on a TV show are exactly the same people who think that it's absolutely fine for a man to claim he is a woman and then use women's vulnerable spaces, be given awards designed for women, take roles designed for women, and what's more they believe that if women dare to object to this they are bigots.

The whole thing makes no sense and will come crashing down pretty soon.

CallofDoodee · 06/02/2020 10:03

Yeah I think if she was actually 'queer' we would know about it by now too. The timing of this is just too ridiculous. Obviously her private life and relationships are hers, but up until now she has never even given a hint that she is anything other than just a bog standard straight female. And if she means she is 'bisexual' because she has had some sort of sexual feelings towards another woman at some point, or did bits with another girl at school or something, then fuck it I'm bisexual too as are probably most women.

I'm officially coming out as queer!

And yes, maybe I'm not being very kind, but this is a woman who is happy to throw women's rights under the bus and enforce ridiculous damaging stereotypes because she thinks it makes her look good, so yes, I will call her out as I see fit.

EverardDigby · 06/02/2020 10:04

So lots of us (including me) are LGB but not queer, and people who are heterosexual can say they are queer. Another example of words not meaning anything.

Haworthia · 06/02/2020 10:14

If she were really bi, though, I’d understand why she’d pick ‘queer’ rather than being more specific. The woke scolds (love that term, btw) have always seemed deeply uncomfortable with bisexuality.

Bisexuality is over though, isn’t it? You can’t say you’re bisexual. It’s transphobic. Everyone is pan nowadays. You need to make it clear that you’re willing to fuck absolutely anyone (even if you really wouldn’t).

To the people who keep saying, she would have come out by now, we would know by now - some people spend a lifetime hiding their sexuality, many live in denial. So for some they never come out as openly LGBT+.

TeaAndStrumpets · 06/02/2020 10:40

Well she "came out" as daft some time ago.

Lordfrontpaw · 06/02/2020 10:41

She hasn’t exactly been a shrinking violet about the subject - and it’s not like she’s in 1950s America and admitting to having been a member of the community’s party...

CallofDoodee · 06/02/2020 10:42

To the people who keep saying, she would have come out by now, we would know by now - some people spend a lifetime hiding their sexuality, many live in denial. So for some they never come out as openly LGBT+.

But the thing is, is JJ claiming that she was picked for this role because she is 'queer' then? So the producers knew she was always a 'legitimate' choice because of her queer status, and she was planning to keep her queer status secret, but hadn't anticipated a backlash (despite always being at the forefront of these sorts of backslashes herself) and has now been 'forced to come out'?

It doesn't make any sense?

CallofDoodee · 06/02/2020 10:43

Or is she saying 'no one knew I was queer when they asked me to do this show, but it's OK because I happen queer anyway so nothing to see here'?

ZeroFucks · 06/02/2020 10:47

Totally off-topic but if you want to know about the story of voguing, watch Pose on BBC iPlayer.

GCAcademic · 06/02/2020 10:49

Yes, it's so brave of her to "come out" specifically for this TV opportunity.

TeaAndStrumpets · 06/02/2020 10:50

Oh and an update from the back of beyond....the kids in my grandson's 6th form were all being pansexual about two years ago. Not sure what they are now, but I thought pan was old hat?

I really think there should be something like BBC weather to keep us all up to date. Tomorrow will be mostly gay, with a few drops of sense in sheltered areas

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 06/02/2020 10:57

Funny how she didn’t think Twitter was a “Hell site” when she was on the right side of Woke. Still, I’m sure she’ll be back soon, collecting those likes and retweets for validation once the backlash has died down...

BorneoBabe · 06/02/2020 11:10

Sells out vulnerable women. Bullies others via name calling and cancel culture. Appropriates the struggles of actual lesbian and bisexuals.

It's called karma, Jameela. Grin

TirisfalPumpkin · 06/02/2020 11:11

There is a bit of a backlash about ‘pan’ from the woke bis, so maybe the younger ones are distancing themselves from it for that reason. Apparently it’s also transphobic, as ‘if you need a different sexuality to include trans people, you’re saying you don’t really see them as their presenting gender’.

Probably safest to not be attracted to anyone - although then you’ll probably get cancelled as a gatekeeping exclusionary ace.

Lordfrontpaw · 06/02/2020 11:14

@BorneoBabe and now I'm humming Karma kamma kamma kamma kamma Chameleon...

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 06/02/2020 11:18

@lordfrontpaw Karma Jameelaeon, surely?

Lordfrontpaw · 06/02/2020 11:27

Yes I spotted that after I wrote my post and have been sniggering in the office.

Are we taking bets on how long it will be before the term "queer" is deemed abhorrent and somethingphobic? What's the timescale on these purity spirals?

Haworthia · 06/02/2020 11:30

Oh that’s amazing @TirisfalPumpkin I love it. Truly there is no end to the purity spiral Grin

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 06/02/2020 11:36

I didn't think Jameela Jamil could get any more insufferably tedious.

But here we are.

SemperIdem · 06/02/2020 11:47

Truly she is ridiculous.

BatShite · 06/02/2020 11:57

'Queer' seems to mean mostly..heterosexual but wants to be seen as special and progressive. Or heterosexual with a liking for bright hairdyes. Or straight male with many fetishes.

Not a word I take at face value at all tbh

Infact most of my mates who actually are LGB hate the word queer as they now see it as both an insult, and the new 'cool gang' that people make ou they are a part of, for attention mostly.

Needmoresleep · 06/02/2020 12:00

I was already a bit Hmm about her emphasis on being a Woman of Colour.

She went to a very posh private girls school in Central London (Queen's College, alumni include Anna Wintour, Jane Asher, Susannah Constantine, Emma Freud, Gertrude Bell, Katherine Mansfield, Jacqueline du Pré and Winston Churchill's daughter).

Presumably to emphasise that she is not a beneficiary of white privilege, but surely socio/economic privilege has at least as much bearing on someone's on someone's relative advantage. The affluent catchment for Queen's College is so international that being "of colour" would not be remotely unusual or remarked on. Very very different from the life experiences of WOC from poorer backgrounds.

RuffleCrow · 06/02/2020 12:02

I thought you meant she'd dyed her hair blue and bleached the roots! That wouldn'tsuit her . I'm guessing she's either lesbian or bisexual in plain English. Not surprised. She and Kristen Bell have some serious chemistry in The Good Place, I always think. Smile
