Dress however you please.
Call yourself whatever you like.
Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you.
Live your best life in peace and security.
But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?

To start off thread 2 - everyone saying the time was right for this to hit the news stands right after the Election was right!

Maya Forstater's Employment Tribunal case is, by virtue of JK Rowling's support, more popular in The Spectator than Boris Johnson by Boris Johnson, The Tories and The Labour Party!

MOST POPULAR in The Spectator

1. In just a few words, JK Rowling has changed the transgender debate (James Kirkup)

  1. Boris Johnson: Perhaps my campaign was ‘clunking’. But sometimes, clunking is what you need (Boris Johnson)
  2. We’ve just had the best decade in human history. Seriously (Matt Ridley)
  3. Keir Starmer looks and sounds middle class precisely because he’s working class (Isabel Hardman)
  4. Let’s make David Lammy Labour’s next leader (Rod Liddle)
  5. A new leader won’t stop the far left’s domination of Labour (Nick Cohen)

BTW, back to literature, I suddenly remember a novel I'd read eons ago, which had to to with intersex. I couldn't even remember the name, I just knew that the author was a Greek man (or at least had a Greek name), and was able to find it on Amazon.
It is Middlesex, by Jeefrey Eugenides.
To got a lot of allocades at the time of its release, but that's because it was a very well written literary novel which won the Pulitzer prize. I myself wasn't too enamoured of it; I can't remember why.
The blurb says this:

The book's wily narrator and central character, Calliope Stephanides (named after the muse of epic poetry) is a hermaphrodite raised as a girl who comes to realise she is happier as a boy and is now living as a man in contemporary Berlin.

I haven't got time to reread it right now but it might be interesting in light of what we are now going through.

@BarbaraStrozzi have you ever seen the film Osama? Set in Afghanastan and about one such girl who needed to pretend to be a boy or her mother (who was alone) was stuffed. Actually it's a very sad film and I'm not recommending it, but it was very moving indeed.

EwwSprouts · 24/12/2019 15:16

From Lamahaha link
"In a move that must have been shocking to GLAAD, Rowling herself ignored them. Her representatives declined GLAAD’s offer of re-education."

I would put good money on JK getting a Damehood in the NY Honours list.

ArranUpsideDown · 24/12/2019 16:08

I am grateful to have learned of the term 'Wokescold' and may need to deploy it with family members.

I am willing to embrace being a 'Scoffwoke' (I'm adapting this from scofflaw which is a favourite word).

Childrenofthestones · 24/12/2019 21:40

I have seen JKR and the text on three different forum sites now and they have all been locked by about page 2
All three sites were unrelated apart from all the mods getting the same memo, especially when people start posting Posy Parker interviews from YT.
It's like the words gone out to close down debate on this.

NightLion · 24/12/2019 23:04

"In a move that must have been shocking to GLAAD, Rowling herself ignored them. Her representatives declined GLAAD’s offer of re-education."

They actually used the word "re-education"?

That's Chilling

In context this would be pretty much the best thing ever. Just imagine the tantrums!

YourOpinionIsNoted · 25/12/2019 17:39

JK getting a Damehood in the NY Honours list.

Ooh fingers crossed! That would be the best present ever.

breakfastpizza · 25/12/2019 19:57

Watching the Star Wars prequels and was struck by how relevant Obi-Wan's statement is in the current climate: "Only a Sith deals in absolutes".

zanahoria · 26/12/2019 13:55

Damehood? she should be the next Queen.

GirlDownUnder · 26/12/2019 15:04

The responses have slowed, but are still coming in! and considering this tweet is so last week / year / decade ok ok 19/12/10 (v old by twitter standards) it’s amazing.

I heart JKR

But how do they distinguish a Damehood from a Knighthood I wonder?

EwwSprouts · 26/12/2019 15:15

Fingers crossed. The Queen bestowed a significant honour on Margaret Attwood fairly recently.

Didn't you know, none of this counts when it comes to titles!

What I rather like about JK’s tweet and subsequent silence is that it will stand, at the top of her profile, and as the quoted tweet on Google, until whenever she decides to tweet again, which could be in months, if ever...Grin

GrimDamnFanjo · 27/12/2019 11:29

It's the Mail but Jan Moir lists JK today as a hero of the year for her tweet - and explained what happened to Maya.

YourOpinionIsNoted · 27/12/2019 15:09

This whole mental topic has turned my opinion on the mail. Yes they print a lot of shit and the sidebar of shame is still shameful, but at least they've got the (unwaxed) balls to publish stories on this.

Always had a slight soft spot for them since the Stephen Lawrence "murderers" headline.

HorseWithNoHumbuggery · 27/12/2019 15:44

... (unwaxed) balls..

lol

It's almost as if 90% of the public agree with her isn't it?

WishThisWasGin · 30/12/2019 12:37

I've introduced my 6 yo twins to the film this week. (more of a book fan myself)

I wonder what the streaming stats for the films are like? Grin
