Dress however you please.
Call yourself whatever you like.
Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you.
Live your best life in peace and security.
But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?

Number of likes seems to be soaring at the moment. Will this be the US/Canadian/Aussie folks joining in?

BrianFuckingMay · 20/12/2019 00:19

As a complete Potterhead and a huge admirer of Jk’s I’m delighted she’s spoken out, but I’m nervous too.

My feelings are similar to those expressed by @MarieIVanArkleStinks in that truthfully she said something very mild (almost radfem lite if you will) and has been absolutely raked over the coals for it. I don’t know, it doesn’t sit well with me. Not that it could sit well with anyone, but you know what I mean.

My best friend- Who told me less than two months ago that Jk gets more hate than she deserves- felt the need to message me asking if I’d heard that she’s now “a terf who hates trans people and supports rhetoric that kills them” So maybe I’m not in the right mood to be positive about this. But I don’t know. Either way my heart goes out to Jk ❤️💐

UpfieldHatesWomen · 20/12/2019 00:27

Most people follow the crowd without a second thought. Once the crowd becomes more openly GC, people who've been shouting 'TERF!' will no doubt do a backtrack.

ARoombaOfOnesOwn · 20/12/2019 00:28

I once heard some female journalists talking about Twitter abuse - possibly on a podcast - they said they even got lots of abuse for talking about something benign, like cats or something. So they were like well if I’m going to be abused for whatever I say, I may as well say my opinions and tweet what I really think. But this is another level really.

JanesKettle · 20/12/2019 00:32

I cannot believe that people can support book burning AND think they are on the right side of history.

They obviously have had a lot of practice in tolerating massive cognitive dissonance.

merrymouse · 20/12/2019 00:33

I am hoping that the inclusion of Gregor Murray and Pip Bunce in the judgement will publicise the fact that TRAs don't believe you have to present as a different sex to your birth sex or make a full-time commitment to transition to be regarded as trans. The only thing that seems necessary is commitment to the ideology.

Scarscar · 20/12/2019 00:36

All these wonderfully woke people seem to be completely oblivious to the fact that they are being terribly homophobic.

theflushedzebra · 20/12/2019 00:36

Mariel, I really do understand Thanks

But the reason she's getting all this hate is because she's finally spoken out - mildly though it was!

SHe's lifting the lid - when people see the hate, they realise. People outside the woke bubble, that is.

Her tweet has blown this thing out of the water - Maya's case is making the news because of this. People in twitter echo chambers need to beware - a huge number of woke twitter young labour people were certain Labour were going to win the election, because of their twitter feeds.. A huge number of the same people think it's ok to abuse women for talking about biological sex as factual. But STILL JK is getting all those likes. She has not been ratioed. People are coming to say "Yes! Biological sex exists, and we all know it really! And, no women shouldn't lose their jobs over expressing this!"

There is hope.

Catsfriend · 20/12/2019 00:38

Deborah Meaden tweeted asking what a certain acronym is. Hope she takes the time to read and see the pile-on.

David Walliams seems to have deleted his tweet as does Amanda Abbington.

Raindrops17 · 20/12/2019 00:44

BrianFuckingMay I would definitely feel more concerned if I had a real life close friend spouting the JK is a T nonsense. So I can understand why you would feel less encouraged by it.

So far I've not seen a single comment/like about JK's tweet from people I know in RL, good or bad. I am the first to 'come out' and I'm being very cautious about it.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 20/12/2019 00:44

BigotedWoman did some wokey fuckwit seriously confuse the utter waste of molecules that is Gregor Murray with Glasgow's greatest philosopher?

Now I'm really pissed off.

GruciusMalfoy · 20/12/2019 00:45

David Walliams post is on Instagram, not Twitter. I'm using the app so can't link here, sorry!

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 20/12/2019 00:47

Haven’t RTFT, but I would like to respond to this.

“Anyone else totally disappointed and saddened to find real life friends and people you follow and admire on Twitter calling JK Rowling a TERF and transphobe? How have so many drunk the Kool Aid?!”

Yeah, it’s awful, and an eye opener...

theflushedzebra · 20/12/2019 00:49

David Walliams has posted a pic of himself with JK on Instagram one hour ago. Solidarity!

We didn't really expect the writer & performer of this to be all woke did we? Although I think Matt Lucas has gone all TWAW, unfortunately.

merrymouse · 20/12/2019 00:59

She has made her views quite clear on Jeremy Corbyn, Trump, Brexit and Scottish independence. I wonder how this compares.

FruitcakeOfHate · 20/12/2019 01:01

Men don't like it when women say no.

WrathofFaeKlop · 20/12/2019 01:01

Her Wikipedia page has been edited several times today.
The Twitter quote was in then taken out.

Digital tyrants, the lot of them.

FloralBunting · 20/12/2019 01:02

Walliams didn't tweet, he posted a picture of himself and Rowling on Insta. Most comments are fangirling/fanboying, but there are a couple of threaded comments calling her nasty names and someone told him he was on the wrong side of history etc.

Mariel, for what it's worth, I get how horrible this is. A woman has tweeted a liberal, kind sentiment about everyone being free and safe, and said that sex is real, and there are rather a lot of frothing nutcases ranting really, really nasty things at her, many of them jawdroppingly misogynistic.

We've, many of us, been at this a while, and I don't think it ever gets easier to read that level of genuine viciousness, but we've learned, I think, that their hate filled rants are the seeds of a fresh new crop of newly stunned people wondering what the hell is going on - which is evidenced not just by that climbing like-count, but the people who have chosen to retweet, use the Maya hashtag and finally speak up about this.

I'm sure JK isn't teflon coated, and none of us are either, and so many of us have faced down the invective of TRAs - I've been called a child abuser on FWR, and had threats on other websites. It is awful. But we are still standing, we are still pushing. This morning, I was about as depressed as I have been for years, completely cried out. This evening, it feels like it was darkest before the dawn.

Much still to do. But hope is a bloody marvel. Head up. Arms together. Keep on. xx

JanesKettle · 20/12/2019 01:03

Concerned for the abuse Sister Outrider is getting on Twitter for standing with Maya.

Black lesbian woman and writer

Absolutely brutal comment. Hope she's OK.

orangejuggling · 20/12/2019 01:05

I'm quite shocked at the level of hatred she is getting. I've also come across various people I know in real life who are calling JKR a transphobe, and viewing Maya as a mean evil person. They are skipping right over the content of the comment that 'sex is real' to a view that JKR is simply being terribly mean. It's so weird, they are clearly very heartfelt about it and I feel quite sad to realise that if I say anything, I'll lose them as friends.

Doesn't stop me thinking it though, and I am grateful to JKR for expressing her opinions. She must know how it would go.

FruitcakeOfHate · 20/12/2019 01:06

2 women a week on average are killed in the UK by their partner or former partner. Killed. But this makes the news, that biological sex is real? Ask yourselves why this is so.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 20/12/2019 01:09

It's so clear that a lot of people have entered the debate today without having considered it before and thought it through. I keep seeing that "rights are not pie" statement. It makes me so angry that people are so blind and labelling women as Nazis, transphobes and homophobes. They have no idea of what is at stake if sex is irrelevant.
