Dress however you please.
Call yourself whatever you like.
Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you.
Live your best life in peace and security.
But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?

have expressed potentially transphobic views like Rowling’s, saying that it’s not possible to change biological sex

And people will skim read to this part and think "what"

The weird thing is that many people just won't notice how stupid that sounds. Some apparently-twitter-famous doctor has replied to her saying

I’m not here to cancel JK Rowling as a person and stoke mob outrage. I’m just here to educate and inform. Trans rights are human rights and trans women are women. Also, white feminism can sometimes intersect with trans exclusion or white supremacy, which is unjust

Also, It is both a scientific and medical fact that intersex individuals do exist and gender is not as binary as mainstream society is set to believe. There have been documented cases of patients born with genetically male 46 XY karyotype who have gotten pregnant and gave birth

None of these point have any relevance to Maya or JK saying "you cannot change biological sex". None of what he said refutes that. And this is a supposedly educated and medically trained individual. And his tweets have 11k likes. It's bizarre.

People are very blinkered on this issue, I think.

Binterested · 19/12/2019 23:12

Im actually very proud of Britain. We are just not a very credulous people when it comes to ideology.

GlitchStitch · 19/12/2019 23:13

Wow I can't believe how big this story has got, TRAs never seem to understand the Streisand Effect. Interesting how this morning it was all gloating that Maya lost and now it's absolute insanity over a rather mild tweet.

I liked this take on it-

Maya’s dad has tweeted.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 19/12/2019 23:16

I was disappointed before when she hadn't spoken up, but this timing is so fucking excellent...Go Maya, Joanne, and all!!
It's moving! PUUULLLLL!!!!

In Jo’s own words (almost) “you cannot deny, she’s got style….”

DeRigueurMortis · 19/12/2019 23:16

That US Spectator article is brilliant!

aliasundercover · 19/12/2019 23:17

How have so many drunk the Kool Aid?!

Because people like to be nice, and if they haven't looked into this deeply they think that's what they're being. I know many intelligent, compassionate, thoughtful people who are vaguely 'pro-trans rights' because it seems like the decent thing to be. They'd probably agree that TWAW because they haven't really thought much about what it actually means.
I was in that position myself a couple of years ago, many of us were. It takes hearing or seeing something to make us go "...hang on?". In my case it was Maria MacLachlan at speakers corner, but if I'd missed that it might have been Hamsted ponds, or JY, or Bergdorff being appointed and NSPCC ambassador ...

UrsulaPandress · 19/12/2019 23:18

Who said gender is binary?

OvaHere · 19/12/2019 23:19

I guess Glinner is no longer assumed leader and overlord of the terven. Grin Grin Grin

Take advantage of the retirement Graham, go on a cruise or a enjoy a few weeks in the sun. TRAs are going to be all about JK for some time now!

Butchyrestingface · 19/12/2019 23:20

JKR’s post was very benign, almost bordering on banal.

And yet the howls of

“YOU WANT US DEAD”
“YOU’RE DENYING OUR RIGHT TO EXIST”

just keep coming

Fuck ‘em.

AreYouSiriusLupin · 19/12/2019 23:21

In Jo’s own words (almost) “you cannot deny, she’s got style….”

Love this Grin

Floisme · 19/12/2019 23:22

And now Floral has come back to see us SmileWhat. A. Day.

goodluckdontdie · 19/12/2019 23:22

I wouldn't even waste a second's thought on people who talk about "cancelling" a person. I have no idea what it means but it sounds so ridiculous... It's a conversation ender.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 19/12/2019 23:22

Put basically Human's on the whole are stupid pack following creatures.

Binterested · 19/12/2019 23:23

Also people really aren’t programmed to think. They are programmed to fit in and conform. Given that wokeness is the currency du jour, being woke is the best strategy. You don’t have to understand what you are saying or believe in it or even really care that much. It’s just the new script.

Exactly like a new papal communication. I don’t suppose your average Joe in medieval Europe cared that much either. Too busy trying to survive the latest war/famine/whatever. But the edict comes down and you absorb it sufficiently to indicate your good standing in society and carry on with the day job. That’s just what’s happening here.

boatyardblues · 19/12/2019 23:25

The likes don’t seem to slowing pace. What do you reckon, will she top 200K likes by morning? I paused momentarily wondering if Twitter might put JKR on their naughty step and mute her for a bit, but then realised their platform would be dead if they did. Well played JKR! What a dilemma for Twitter...

hoopdaloo · 19/12/2019 23:31

When I opened this thread, I was worried.

I'm glad to see that Jk has spoken out. I've liked and retweeted. Not sure if it was wise. But I'm a SAHM so I don't think I'll be getting the boot any time soon.

How any one is arguing with someone for saying sex is real is beyond me. Is our education system that bad?!

I find it so fucking insulting that a woman who has endured domestic violence, and was made to publish her amazing novels under initials so as not to let on she is a woman, isn't allowed to speak out on a feminist issue. She is everything those misogynistic knob heads hate, a fucking successful woman DESPITE her oppression due to her biology.

And that Jameela can do one. Cis woman my arse. Angry

But yey for JK. I hope the hope she has given so many of us spurs her through the upcoming storm she is putting herself through. She is a legend. Jo for Supreme Mugwump!

Haworthia · 19/12/2019 23:31

Ha! What a brilliant tweet. If biological sex isn’t real, then what is feminism?

JK Rowling
DodoPatrol · 19/12/2019 23:32

Because people like to be nice

They don't seem to like to be nice to women who say mild and restrained things like 'I will, out of courtesy, use preferred pronouns, but I don't believe that men literally become women.'

They apparently like to call them vile bigots, Nazis and murderers. The level of rage is very odd to watch.

anomoony · 19/12/2019 23:34

There have been documented cases of patients born with genetically male 46 XY karyotype who have gotten pregnant and gave birth

Relevance aside, Hmm. I know one case in India where a person who had an intersex condition was first treated with some hormones to make their uterus develop, then fertilized with a donor embryo (they did not have any eggs obviously) and then carried the pregnancy. This would never have been possible without a fertile XX egg donor.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 19/12/2019 23:35

AreYouSiriusLupin

Love the name Crown Grin

This is one of my favourite lines and I’m so happy to be able to apply to Jo herself

2BthatUnnoticed · 19/12/2019 23:35

There is so much misleading info out there.

Maya lost her job because of views she expressed on her personal Twitter - not for “misgendering a colleague” (!?) as I have seen TRAs claim. She does address people with their requested pronouns.

Ms Rowling, the people are with you on this. We are with you.

JK Rowling
GruciusMalfoy · 19/12/2019 23:35

David Walliams has just posted a photo with her on Instagram, caption, "She is my hero". People piling on already. They can't "cancel" everyone... much as they may like to.

Ereshkigal · 19/12/2019 23:36

There have been documented cases of patients born with genetically male 46 XY karyotype who have gotten pregnant and gave birth

There has been ONE documented case of a person with mosaicism.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 19/12/2019 23:37

Also, It is both a scientific and medical fact that intersex individuals do exist and gender is not as binary as mainstream society is set to believe. There have been documented cases of patients born with genetically male 46 XY karyotype who have gotten pregnant and gave birth

'Intersex' conditions are biological realities not identities and nothing to do with the meaningless word 'gender'.

And while there have been cases of genetic males with Swyer Syndrome giving birth these have not happened naturally, they don't have female gonads, but via donor eggs.

In short the doctor is using the often distressing medical conditions of the miniscule minority of people who have a mismatch of genotype and phenotype to harass women. Vile misogynist and interphobe that he is.

Sex remains binary.
