Dress however you please.
Call yourself whatever you like.
Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you.
Live your best life in peace and security.
But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?

This and @MRKHClaire is back on Twitter

I didn't know this! I see she's already having to be concerned about shadowban but it feels like the thaw in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe that she's back at all.

I hope it is a true Winter thaw and not a false one.

EverardDigby · 19/12/2019 21:25

Lamahaha it came from the Elle thread linked earlier, it's parody with some genuine outrage mixed in, it's really funny though.

UpfieldHatesWomen · 19/12/2019 21:26

I'm outside the UK and this looks like it's the biggest Worldwide trend on Twitter. Saw Ben Shapiro has tweeted, along with Brett Weinstein, Andrew Doyle and plenty of other blue ticks, JK's a shero.

Happy delurking day, isabelle!

Tickled by those muppets wanting to (re)educate JKR. someone thinks highly of themself 😂

Scarscar · 19/12/2019 21:27

Yeah Laurence says exactly when he thinks. He's done a couple of interesting interviews on you tube.

Scarscar · 19/12/2019 21:29

What not when

AreYouSiriusLupin · 19/12/2019 21:32

JKR, you are a bloody star Flowers

ArranUpsideDown · 19/12/2019 21:32

I'm pre Potter generation but just bought myself a Gryffindor tshirt for Christmas

I'm beginning to think there will need to be a print of Ravenclaw shirts for explaining basic biology.

And Hufflepuff for the legal and vernacular sense of dignity.

nauticant · 19/12/2019 21:32

Twitter tells me this is a big UK news story and after clicking on the relevant link I found this splendid compare and contrast:

Variety: J.K. Rowling's support of researcher fired for being anti-trans sparks backlash

Metro: Harry Potter author JK Rowling accused of being a 'TERF' after defending researcher who was sacked for tweeting 'men cannot change into women'

IsabelleSE19 · 19/12/2019 21:32

Thanks Sophocles! I can report that, although I may not have posted on here before, I have been busy spreading the word amongst my friends and family, mostly successfully I think.

FloraGreysteel · 19/12/2019 21:32

I'm sorry, professor. But I must not tell lies.

The comment about Dolores Umbridge and compelled speech upthread was very apposite!

AreYouSiriusLupin · 19/12/2019 21:33

As a Ravenclaw Arran, I agree 😁

EwwSprouts · 19/12/2019 21:33

I hope Boris/aides to Boris & all the new MPs are watching.

Findumdum1 · 19/12/2019 21:36

90K!

so great to see most people are reasonable.

NeurotrashWarrior · 19/12/2019 21:37

The word terf if actually trending now. Jeez.

Raindrops17 · 19/12/2019 21:37

It's quite eye opening the difference just one tweet, by one influential person can make. Imagine if more people with her kind of following spoke up?

Her tweet has hit 90k as I write this. Won't be long before it hits +100k. This is so encouraging. I wonder how many people had a 'penny drop' moment by her one tweet. (I wanted to say something else but would get deleted, hopefully you know what I mean).

GCAcademic · 19/12/2019 21:41

Yes, Laurence Fox has been out as anti-woke for a while. I watched an interview he did on a YouTube channel and he said that there are a lot more people in his profession than you would think that are exasperated with the whole SJW thing. He also said he didn’t want his kids growing up thinking that they had their own special reality.

ACouchOfOnesOwn · 19/12/2019 21:42

The editing of the Twitter moment about this is in keeping with Twitter's TWAW stance. it's heavily weighted to the 'isn't JK a nasty TERF' tweets.
JK is famously litigious. I wonder if she'd consider a case against Twitter for misrepresenting the discussion and the ratio of tweets. Twitter having to answer for their misogyny again would be the icing on the cake.

Binterested · 19/12/2019 21:42

My god. If I were Maya I’d be pleased but also horrified. She surely doesn’t want to be a worldwide news story. I’d also be feeling a little exposed if I were the judge. Pretty poor quality work there - now being raked over internationally.

It’s quite humbling what reach JK has. It’s great that she’s on the side of sanity but what if she wasn’t ? Twitter and its ilk has made us all lose our minds - a very few words from a very famous woman somehow change the terms of a debate internationally? When that debate is actually about something so banal and ordinary - that men are not women - that a small child could argue the case. We really are little more than medieval peasants looking for signs from on high.

merrymouse · 19/12/2019 21:43

I suspect even more people would have a penny drop moment if they knew that the person Maya 'misgendered' as male presents as male and was suspended from their job as a councillor, in part, for calling a woman a cunt.

AreYouSiriusLupin · 19/12/2019 21:43

Just looking at some of the messages from outraged transpeople saying they have been sobbing about her 'hating them'. They really do not get it do they. It is all ME ME ME.

Also, certain 'famous' people on instagram falling over themselves to apologise for liking the tweet before realising what it was actually about. How they are not transphobic, trans rights are human rights etc etc. No fucking mention of the intimidation and lack of safety for girls and women, of the feelings of utter trauma for survivors of sexual abuse who need all female spaces. No acknowledgement of the brave female athletes who are now coming forward to share how their opportunities have been severely restricted having to compete against men who 'identify as women'.

DecemberDays · 19/12/2019 21:44

The tweet is wonderfully well crafted because the first four lines shine with peace, inclusivity and diversity (or at least what most people would see as that) which then sharply contrasts with the real consequences of intolerance. It works because it encapsulates the debate in an extremely concise way which resonates.
But then to get such a vitriolic backlash - it illustrates the point she is trying to make - this is real, it is not a drill.

I have not read Harry Potter (although DD has all the books). I do like the idea of some other HP merchandise though.
