Dress however you please.
Call yourself whatever you like.
Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you.
Live your best life in peace and security.
But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?

I'm only semi-openly gender critical (ie only some people know) but I've just posted on Facebook "Think it’s time I started re-reading Harry Potter" as a sort of modern day Ichthis - those in the know should (hopefully) know and to anyone else it looks innocent.

merrymouse · 19/12/2019 18:56

So, so grateful to Maya and JK Rowling.

mcduffy · 19/12/2019 18:56

I've replied to her, liked the tweet and ordered the kids' box set of books (my DCs are too young but now's an excellent time to show support. My head has been edging towards the parapet for a while and now it's above it. I've not used twitter for a while but have about 1k followers, I'm not fussed who unfollows me (I spend my time here anyway!)
I could lose my job but I've got a fuck ton of equity in my house and my DH wants to go travelling anyway. Though he suggested Canada first HmmConfusedGrin
Courage calls to courage everywhere. Thanks for giving me strength, JKR, Maya, and you wonderful women of FWR.

anomoony · 19/12/2019 18:57

A long and heated discussion followed and it turned out that most members had no idea what the fuss was about, what JR was talking about, who Maya is.

That's the point. TRAs know that if people just look at JR's tweet they won't find it scandalous in any way. So the idea is to make a huge amount of noise about terves and transphobia and literal violence and how trans people have a right to exist. People hear the noise, never check the tweet, and imagine that JR has suggested carting trans people off to the ovens or something.

KettlePolly · 19/12/2019 19:01

Male violence is documented. There isn't room to be "kind" if you have your head screwed on because male violence isn't kind. Boundaries exist for sensible and hard fought reasons. Not all men but some. Because the vast majority of us will put ourselves out, as women, to make people around us feel comfortable. Not least because being acquiescent means you aren't "provoking." If you want to go to a country where women need permission to do things (or even be born) do you honestly think they can opt out? It's not a choice. It's not the transperson "trying to have a wee" that's the problem, biological men are the problem and these changes to practice make it so super easy for abusers to do harm. Opening a door that can't be shut and it's really not fair.

MrsFionaCharming · 19/12/2019 19:01

A parcel for DH arrived from amazon today, I’m pretty sure it’s my illustrated Goblet of Fire. Even more excited now!

ArranUpsideDown · 19/12/2019 19:05

do you think he actually believes the rubbish he's tweeting??

Sadly, yes. Tho' in the Harry Frankfurt On Bullshit sense who knows which category he falls into when considering such things. And he is categorised as a KOL (Key Opinion Leader) because of his roles as surgeon/scientist/entrepreneur etc.

I'm shocked at the number of people who are skeptics, scientists or medics who are fully behind those mantras.

PS - just noticed that Gu has launched into a particularly ill-advised thread on DSDs.

The controversies section on Gu is... interesting. Seems to be a bit of a thing for men with records of domestic violence to enjoy putting women in their place on Twitter.

Redshoeblueshoe · 19/12/2019 19:14

Thank you Maya, thank you JK, and did I spot Anna upthread ? Thank you Anna
And merry Christmas to you all Wine Wine Gin

Tootsweets23 · 19/12/2019 19:16

I wonder what the judge's response was when her saw JK's tweet? Gulp or thrilled knowing it would focus even more attention on his judgement (and spelling errors)?

MrsFogi · 19/12/2019 19:16

This is wonderful - I was really disheartened after yesterday's judgement but this tweet has bucked me up no end. The Employment Tribunal can rule as it likes but the fact is that since the Lib Dems put this rubbish in their manifesto we can have conversations about this in RL and the more blue ticks who speak out the easier it will be (and the more difficult it will be to sack us for doing so).

FusionChefGeoff · 19/12/2019 19:18

The article in the guardian is pretty good I think. Chooses some very sensible statements / extracts which should have most people agreeing with Maya I think - or am I just on a high and feeling indulgent towards them???

OvaHere · 19/12/2019 19:19

#IstandwithMaya currently trending at 35.4k tweets. Apparently trending in Canada too.

pemberlyshades · 19/12/2019 19:19

I'm still so happy right now 🍷 I've decided to come away from twitter and watch and see how it all unfolds.

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 19/12/2019 19:22

I have work today and I'm actually so excited about JK I can't concentrate.

If you think Swinson's manifesto brought it out into the open this has blow. it. up.

I was one of the ones who thought "why doesn't she speak up she has nothing to lose" and when I look at the abuse and coverage she's getting it's beyond my wildest nightmares.

And yet all she's saying is what anyone with eyes and a brain can she.

Freedom is the freedom to say two plus two equals four.

Just so worried she's going to retract/qualify it. I wish there's a way we could communicate our support to her.

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 19/12/2019 19:22

So many typos. Told you I couldn't concentrate!

Dangerfloof · 19/12/2019 19:22

70k likes and still trending. Jeez I bloody hope this gets more and more sunlight. I've never read the books and I'm not going to, but someone so famous, with literally billions of people who know of her. This could be just what we needed.

RuffleCrow · 19/12/2019 19:22

Yes no squirrels.

Any woman who has given birth and also denies biology is either naive beyond belief, a simpering handmaiden or a bold faced liar.

mcduffy · 19/12/2019 19:27

Baddiel has retweeted this... I unfollowed Siobhan recently for using "t*rf"

I am the Harry Potter generation. I have a 2 year old. It’s only really after having her I have had several ‘wtf’ moments where I have been appalled at something I wouldn’t have bothered with before. I’ll be damned if I let them take my daughters spaces.

MrsFogi · 19/12/2019 19:31

I've often said it but if I won the lottery I would be spending an awful lot of time and money on the self-id issue. JKR is in the fantastic position of being a woman who doesn't need to worry about keeping a job to pay a mortgage and I am delighted she is using that position to speak out and potentially have a massive impact on whether or not women lose their rights under the EA in the foreseeable future.

RoyalCorgi · 19/12/2019 19:32

Burning books and wailing about how words are literal violence.

It's hilarious, because burning books is such a bad look - and they don't even realise it because their knowledge of history or indeed anything outside their little woke bubble is so meagre.

theflushedzebra · 19/12/2019 19:35

Burning books is a totalitarian action. They are showing us who they are.

"Beginning on May 10, 1933, Nazi-dominated student groups carried out public burnings of books they claimed were “un-German.” The book burnings took place in 34 university towns and cities. Works of prominent Jewish, liberal, and leftist writers ended up in the bonfires. The book burnings stood as a powerful symbol of Nazi intolerance and censorship."

encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/book-burning

Yet they call us the fascists and the bigots.
