I'm one of the many who feels the need to stay publicly silent on this because although I wouldn't be sacked, my working life would be made intolerable if my actual views came to light. I imagine there's legions of me out there!
Yep, I'm one of them. And yet...
I belong to an online book club with thousands of members/readers. Political posts are not allowed, yet still today one of the members posted about how sad she was that JR is "transphobic". A long and heated discussion followed and it turned out that most members had no idea what the fuss was about, what JR was talking about, who Maya is.
I raised my head above the parapet and at first said, very mildly, something about free speech. I did get a lot of pushback, but in this group I just didn't care, and kept on with my arguments. There were enough GC responses to give me hope that those who had no idea, now have an inkling as to what is going on.
In the end I reported the original post to admin for being against group rules, and it will get deleted, but I hope the discussion itself opened many pairs of eyes.
That's just one little "real life" encounter. I won't go more public than that (I post with my real name in that group and don't know any members irl) but it was refreshing to at last speak out. I can't wait for the day, hopefully soon, when I can come fully out into the sunlight.
The people having tantrums have been living in a little Twitter bubble and have no idea about the real world and how real people evaluate the issue. I don't go on Twitter. I haven't even read the original JR tweet.
I've never been into Harry Potter but I love JR and even more after today.
