This whole hate speech/incident law is completely out of control. This is sinister.

"Do people from overseas go 'on vacation' to Manchester?"

  • Only if they watched thefilm "Manchester By The Sea" and got confused.

(I had a Manchester Tart once. 'Not from round here are yer, luv?' she said.)

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 04/02/2019 10:35

Another police incident:

Margaret Nelson
‏*@Flashmaggie*
What a way to start the day! 2 early cold callers, one saying they're from the "call-blocking department", and a policewoman to tell me my online activity has caused offense to "transgenders", though she agreed a blog post wasn't untrue. Whoever's been offended tracked me down!

This blog post was mentioned. Apparently it's offensive.

AngryAttackKittens · 04/02/2019 10:37

Arrest reality for hurting people's feelings! Ban CSI units for their transphobic ability to determine the sex of skeletons without asking for pronouns!

ToeToToe · 04/02/2019 10:51

What is the "call-blocking department" ?

We appear to be turning into a totalitarian police state.

AngryAttackKittens · 04/02/2019 10:53

I also would like to know what the call blocking department is and what they do (other than harassing bloggers).

ScipioAfricanus · 04/02/2019 10:56

Any archaeologist could also be accused of being anti-trans on this basis. Nothing in there that is offensive except for people who are, of course, offended by reality.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 04/02/2019 11:03

What is the "call-blocking department" ?

It's a scammer I assume, and nothing to do with the call from the police.

nauticant · 04/02/2019 11:08

My immediate assumption was a scam where a caller claims they can protect you from nuisance calls and then harvests your data on the pretext of using it to put an effective call-block in place.

Melroses · 04/02/2019 11:13

Do people from overseas go 'on vacation' to Manchester? No offence to Manchester, but c'mon, really? Puts one in mind of those Russians who come over for a day trip to Salisbury Cathedral LOL Grin Manchester has some very fine industrial museums, and Salisbury Cathedral has a really good spire. Bit of an anorak holiday, even by my standards.

mimivanne · 04/02/2019 11:17

I'm mystified - the police may call you because individuals are 'offended'.
WTAF

Melroses · 04/02/2019 11:21

I know - usually it is a job to get them to call you back after you have called them....…..

nauticant · 04/02/2019 11:36

Not quite mimivanne. The police may call you because a particular set of individuals are 'offended' about a particular type of comment.

But if someone had a foul misogynistic rant at you, the police would be nonplussed if you asked them to go after the ranter.

Carowiththegoodhair · 04/02/2019 11:40

But if someone had a foul misogynistic rant at you, the police would be nonplussed if you asked them to go after the ranter.

This.

Melroses · 04/02/2019 11:52

I liked this tweet from Dr Jane Clare Jones. The juxtaposition of not believing in the use prisons*, yet using the police as thought police seems a typical contradiction.

twitter.com/janeclarejones/status/1092379580957110272

The police are calling people to tick them off for writing things that the EHRC has just confirmed it is perfectly lawful to write.

All you ‘anti-carceral’ peeps who are perfectly happy to use the literal thoughtpolice for ideological coercion. Jokers and hypocrites.

(*The liberals wanted gulags, didn't they?)

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 04/02/2019 12:34

There might be follow up

Harry the owl visited by police
sackrifice · 04/02/2019 13:02

Bloody hell. Blogging about skeletons is now illegal?

They need to keep on overplaying their hand this is fucking amazing.

MiddleAgeRage · 04/02/2019 13:11

Do people from overseas go 'on vacation' to Manchester? No offence to Manchester, but c'mon, really?

I have friend who does tours of Manchester for 'vacationers' from around the world. They're usually here for the lefty history angle - Marx, Engels, Peterloo Massacre etc.

Believe it or not, tourists also want include Rochdale in their vacation plans as it's the birthplace of the co-operative movement. It's very big with Japanese tourists is Rochdale.

End of derail.

Melroses · 04/02/2019 13:32

I think if you were coming from America you would probably include it in a tour of the Lakes and Hadrian's Wall.

Iggypoppie · 04/02/2019 16:45

So Margaret Nelson has been told by police that they were just following orders...

twitter.com/SuffolkPolice/status/1092411634763661314

ScipioAfricanus · 04/02/2019 17:08

So Margaret Nelson has been told by police that they were just following orders...

Absolutely terrifying that the police are basically telling us ‘we have to do what a TRA tells us’ even if it’s not even a crime under the already suspect ‘hate crime’ categories.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 04/02/2019 17:09

It's pretty clear that there are coordinated efforts to mass report identifiable people to the police. It's a massive own goal though. The Humberside debacle is only exposing the madness to more people.

HomeStar · 04/02/2019 17:19

TRAs are power tripping like crazy. This can’t go on. More people are realising that something is deeply wrong here.

Though I’m trying to imagine how the police could be fixed, in the event of a government that actually wanted to make the police force fit for purpose, and I can’t even imagine how it could be done. The rot goes so deep.

ToeToToe · 04/02/2019 19:48

That is a very interesting twitter thread.

I'm in complete agreement that this is intimidation and an abuse of power by the police.

Trousering · 04/02/2019 21:05

That is just 'The Web Team'.

Not sure who they are Hmm
