"Tens of thousands of pounds has been raised for transgender charity Mermaids, thanks to a Twitch streamer playing Donkey Kong 64 for an entire day.

HBomberGuy (Harry Brewis), a popular UK-based content creator who has more than 300,000 subscribers on YouTube, came up with an unlikely way to raise money for the embattled transgender children’s charity, which recently had part of its lottery funding suspended after a campaign from anti-trans activists."

I wonder whether with that money we'll see a more litigious Mermaids.

nauticant · 21/01/2019 12:07

Hahahahaha at that tweet!

R0wantrees · 21/01/2019 12:08

Sunset They aren't very well informed.

This is a very emotional response.

Logical brains are not driving the reactions.

Its quite extraordinary to witness.

R0wantrees · 21/01/2019 12:11

It will be interesting to see what Mermaids announce they will be spending their windfall on.

As far as I'm aware, they weren't calling for additional funding.

They are a registered charity so have a defined scope of purpose.

Ereshkigal · 21/01/2019 12:13

What clueless fools these people are.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 21/01/2019 12:15

They are followers who don't have the ability to think or research, even slightly. Those in power like people like this for obvious reasons, you can tell them anything.

SunsetBeetch · 21/01/2019 12:19

Yes R0wantrees and a lot have just got swept along with the mob, with this thing going viral.

Totally agree that the exposure is both a good and a bad thing. People who like to read, consider and make up their own kinds may be in for a shock!

GinSoakedGina · 21/01/2019 12:25

People who like to read, consider and make up their own kinds may be in for a shock!

Probably people who like spelling too.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 21/01/2019 12:31

But not who like to be bitchy.

R0wantrees · 21/01/2019 12:33

I recommend the ChimpParadox link.

SunsetBeetch · 21/01/2019 12:34

These are the edgy kids of the internet, Captain, they don't have much else other than snark.

I do like spelling too. It's only 3 letters.

R0wantrees · 21/01/2019 12:36

These are the edgy kids of the internet, Captain, they don't have much else other than snark.

These are the gamer 'heroes' that many children watch, follow and are influenced by.

This is one of the dangers of YouTube.

ChewyLouie · 21/01/2019 12:59

A Brass Eye on genderism!
I’m cracking up at just the thought of it 😂

PencilsInSpace · 21/01/2019 13:00

I wish Linehan, Morris, Davis and Brooker would team up and write something about all this. Julie Davis could do a fantastic parody of Susie Green.

That would be all my dark comedy dreams come true.

I was watching the other night. He said it's now impossible to write comedy because there's no background reality any more, it's all gone so insane there's nothing for the comedy to stand out against.

I suspect he's right, you could write the most biting satire or the most surreal comedy about all this and it would be indistinguishable from straight drama or documentary.

JoanSummers · 21/01/2019 13:13

He is wrong about that imo. Sharp comedy writing would do a lot for shedding light on the madness and encouraging criticism on this topic.

The establishment, 'left' and 'right', capitalist and 'socialist', 'feminist' and anti-feminist, are all into gender worship right now. Satire is one of the best ways to criticise and expose the establishment when it is trying to control people's thoughts and speech.

Datun · 21/01/2019 13:58

Oh dear lord SunsetBeetch, that tweet!

What fools.

I hope they told that person that mermaids recommend a doctor who has been prosecuted and sterilised a 12 year old

Bowlofbabelfish · 21/01/2019 14:00

Satire is one of the best ways to criticise and expose the establishment when it is trying to control people's thoughts and speech.

I couldn’t agree more. And you only have to look at a group’s response to satire to see everything you need to know about them. Fundamentalists of all stripes are humourless bastards.

I may go and reread ‘the name of the rose.’

OldCrone · 21/01/2019 16:15

Just want to correct something in the tweet posted by SunsetBeetch. Susie Green is the CEO of Mermaids, not the founder.

R0wantrees · 21/01/2019 16:23

Susie Green (CEO Mermaids), Dr Helen Webberley & Johanna Olson-Kennedy all enthusiastic participants in last years' WPATH conference.
There were many concerning Safeguarding implications to claims and practices promoted by keyspeakers at the conference:

being trans is not a negative outcome

her whole animus is making what she did to her child OK isn't?

by persuading other people to do the same things to their children

it's chilling

GrumpyGran8 · 21/01/2019 17:53

What clueless fools these people are They're gamers - they spend so much time behind a screen that they haven't the time to research, or even think, for themselves. So they rely on what they've been told.

In this case, it seems that somebody has been spreading the story amongst US gamers that Mermaids is a charity for rescuing abused and runaway trans children.
I've been trying to educate them on Twitter - they simply abuse me, telling me that I'm a Trump voter, to "stick with your KKK pals" etc. So I've withdrawn for a bit and just waiting for it to blow over.
I'm also waiting to see what will actually happen with the money. I can't find any information on which organisation is collecting it and where the extraordinary figures for the amounts so far donated are coming from. The only link for donations leads to this person's own Twitch account - so what will the tax situation be, how much will be taken off for "expenses"?

And who will be checking that there's no fraud involved? Really, I can't help thinking of how Trump has used dodgy accounting to enrich himself through his so-called charity. If he can get away with it.....

GrumpyGran8 · 21/01/2019 18:09

SunsetBeetch
That person is a data scientist who tracks white supramacist networks in the US by cross-checking the information given in public court documents and doxxing them. emilygorcenski.com/about/#curriculum-vitae
I'm really not seeing how she can apply that expertise to digging the dirt on Glinner - she appears to think that he's some sort of alt-right gang leader running a shadowy network of transphobes and haters via MumsNet. (Though, all the same, I hope MN is beefing up it's site security. Sad)

SunsetBeetch · 21/01/2019 18:13

I think there's been way too much publicity about this for anything dodgy to happen to the money, really (and I think publicity was largely the point). And I don't think hbomberguy would do anything like that tbh, even though I don't particularly like the guy.

It'll be interesting to see what Mermaids do with it - weren't they wanting to use the lottery money to build more regional offices/clinics/whatever they call them? I would hope with more bases, comes more scrutiny.
