Gamer raises $100,000 (and rising) for trans charity Mermaids by playing Donkey Kong non-stop

"Tens of thousands of pounds has been raised for transgender charity Mermaids, thanks to a Twitch streamer playing Donkey Kong 64 for an entire day.

HBomberGuy (Harry Brewis), a popular UK-based content creator who has more than 300,000 subscribers on YouTube, came up with an unlikely way to raise money for the embattled transgender children’s charity, which recently had part of its lottery funding suspended after a campaign from anti-trans activists."

Hate to burst the bubble on this one, but anyone can nominate anything for that prize - even the person who wrote it can nominate their own work. A nomination here means absolutely nothing about the quality of the work.

I look forward to her blowing the whistle on Glinner having set up and organised a ring of dodgy Catholic priests on Craggy Island.

I'm sure that would look really good for the TRAs, a mass doxing.

Anyway @MumsnetHQ - letting you know of the threat, just in case.

Hamster00 · 21/01/2019 18:46

how does one make money from playing donkey Kong?

Just like any streamer really. Set up a Twitch account, have a decent gaming PC or console and a webcam. Stream your gameplay, be entertaining and gain followers.

Followers can immediately "donate" to or tip a streamer. Anything from £1 upwards (I've seen donations run into £1000s). After a certain amount of followers and concurrent viewers watching the channel you can then apply to be an "affiliate" - whereby followers can subscribe to your channel for a monthly fee (£5 which is split 50/50 between the streamer and Twitch).

When your concurrent viewers reaches 75 or more then you can apply for "partnership", which brings in even more benefits.

Some streamers are streaming to 10s of thousands of viewers per night. The more viewers/followers, then the more tips and subscriptions a streamer gets.

Do the maths. Some of these streamers are earning hundreds of thousands of pounds a year. (As an aside, tax is paid on the earnings as the streamer is classed as an "entertainer" - and tax forms have to be completed when the streamer reaches affiliate status).

That's basically it.

It'll be interesting to see what Mermaids do with it - weren't they wanting to use the lottery money to build more regional offices/clinics/whatever they call them?

YY they did talk about intending to do this and grow their empire.

They also had funding to provide training in a number of schools so may well seek to expand this program too.

I’ve never read kiwifarms.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 21/01/2019 20:15

cor, someone's here to tell us the rules of feminism

ace

OldCrone · 21/01/2019 20:18

It's tricky, isn't it Kiwis. All our usual allies are fighting against us, so we're pretty much on our own here. Gender stereotyping is flavour of the decade, so those of us who think it should be consigned to the dustbin of history find ourselves in some respects on the same side as people who we'd normally view as enemies. It's a bizarre situation to be in.

And as for who has the right to call themselves feminists - I say I'm a feminist, and who are you to say otherwise? Some people call themselves feminists whilst simultaneously aligning themselves with people who think the reinforcement of rigid gender stereotypes is the progressive thing to do. Are those people feminists? Should they be allowed to call themselves feminists?

When transactivists stop bullying and threatening women for having different opinions, or even speak up for women, then I'll listen to sanctimonious lectures about what information sources I can and can't access when most of the "social justice" internet goes for blatant misogyny a little too easily and gleefully. Get your own house in order.

Backatcha.

Ereshkigal · 21/01/2019 20:22

Transactivism is a misogynist free for all, so I don't know what point you think you're making.

This.

nauticant · 21/01/2019 20:31

Does this mean anyone who strenuously avoids Kiwifarms is a loyal supporter of Yaniv and his legal actions against beauticians as well as his predatory behaviour around children?

This you're-either with-us-or-against-us sure makes for uncomfortable alliances.

NotTerfNorCis · 21/01/2019 20:32

Kiwifarms is nasty, so how come TRAs are focusing their attacks on the polite, reasonable crowd at Mumsnet?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 21/01/2019 20:34

Cos we are just little wimmin?

SunsetBeetch · 21/01/2019 20:36

Oooh that's a toughie, NotTerfOrCis Hmm

nauticant · 21/01/2019 20:37

I'll tell you what often gets me to have a look at Kiwifarms. There'll be a vague report of someone whose behaviour is very worrying/threatening and when I search I'll find that none of the normal media outlets are going anywhere near the story but there'll be a link to Kiwifarms.

And I'll think "fuck it, I want to inform myself and not be kept in the dark" and so I'll go and have a look.

Reallyevilmuffin · 21/01/2019 20:39

Was not mermaids the charity that got peer reviewed scientific papers retracted because they harmed the trans message?

Bowlofbabelfish · 21/01/2019 20:40

Who died of self immolation?

I’m afraid I don’t take kindly to being told what I can and can’t read. We aren’t in gilead yet. Reading and using information on a website doesn’t mean you’re 100% behind everything they do - you understand that KF may be a site to take the piss out of people AND a repository of information which is getting removed from elsewhere? That it contains a plurality of opinion, like mumsnet?

I don’t get my news from solely left or solely right wing sources - indeed reading how a range of media cover the same story can be as informative as the story itself.

The idea that if you read an article from a ‘right wing’ source it’s all untrue is ridiculous. It’s this mindset of dividing the world into goodies and baddies. It’s assuming the left is good simply because it’s left and the right bad simply because it’s right. Well it doesn’t work like that. The current left in the UK is morally bankrupt (which pains me because I’m left leaning but it is what it is.)

I know exactly what KF is. I’ll read what I want, until women are banned from reading...
