"Tens of thousands of pounds has been raised for transgender charity Mermaids, thanks to a Twitch streamer playing Donkey Kong 64 for an entire day.

HBomberGuy (Harry Brewis), a popular UK-based content creator who has more than 300,000 subscribers on YouTube, came up with an unlikely way to raise money for the embattled transgender children’s charity, which recently had part of its lottery funding suspended after a campaign from anti-trans activists."

swift
It was nominated for the John Maddox prize, given to those promoting science in the face of hostility.

Guess those pesky scientists didn't think it was rubbish.

The journal Nature is a partner. OMG!

I don’t think anyone has a problem with this fundraising. Whatever people’s opinion of Mermaids the only complaints about financial support have been eithe inappropriate methods for a children’s charity or it being public money. What people want to donate to is up to them. No one is that bothered.

SunsetBeetch · 20/01/2019 11:06

user They aren't just gamers, they are also SJWs. They do/did videos crtiquing the alt right, PUAs and (ironically) MRAs too. Contrapoints, who was trans but has possibly changed their mind, is part of their 'group'.

They are still repeating the lie that Glinner was responsible for organising the contacting the national lottery thing. Uh no, Adrain, Harry, Lindsey, Natalie, Shaun, whoever: we'd already been talking about it on here and on twitter. Glinner popped on to give us details of who to write to.

It's pretty misogynist of you to make out that Glinner is our leader and tells us what to do, y'know.

SunsetBeetch · 20/01/2019 11:08

Quite, Delirium. They seem to think they are sticking it to us and Graham. Uh no, do what you want with your time and money.

Katispancuddly · 20/01/2019 11:08

People can donate their money to whomever they want.

There are consequences though. Like the story of this poor boy. The judge told the parents to stay away from Mermaids.

What science award? From what I've read of it, it's complete rubbish

Is there some kind of online learning resource that makes so people denigrate something that, in the same sentence, they claim to have no knowledge of?

fidgetspinner555 · 20/01/2019 11:10

Oh yes, that Kiwi Farms thread is VERY illuminating!! Do go and have a look with the sorts of people he associates with.

KlutzyDraconequus · 20/01/2019 11:15

I'm not really a Reddit sort of person but this thread, topic, discussion or whatever they call it was interesting.

HalloumiGus · 20/01/2019 11:18

Those case studies from the Mermaids site give me the rage. By their explanation my doll / dress rejecting and obsession with running wild / playing with action figures meant that I was a man born in the wrong body. Except instead I'm a 40 something mother who still mostly lives in jeans and boots and rarely wears makeup. Just because I never played with dollies does not a transman make me.

Datun · 20/01/2019 11:23

There is a very lengthy thread on kiwi farms about Hbomberguy.

Indeed. And I only read half the first page. I'm not sure Mermaids should be publicising any connection to this person.

Ereshkigal · 20/01/2019 11:31

Quite, Delirium. They seem to think they are sticking it to us and Graham. Uh no, do what you want with your time and money.

I know, I'd rather they took money from uninformed wokesters than taxpayers money or lottery money. We'll continue to raise our concerns about this organisation.

Why on earth would raising money be "sticking it" to anyone?
Sometimes the logic is so hard to follow...
But then when you don't understand what our problem with mermaids actually is and only have out of context screenshots I guess it's easy to believe maybe that we don't like donkey Kong?

Ereshkigal · 20/01/2019 12:01

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "scary things"? from what I've read they're a pretty well respected charity

There are plenty of threads on here, as well as Twitter. Do feel free to inform yourself better.

fidgetspinner555 · 20/01/2019 12:03

That Reddit article is interesting - loads of kids who say that puberty blockers are harmless and have no lasting effects. The brainwashing of the youth has been completed.

Oh and we're all Greer era t*rfs.

Deliriumoftheendless · 20/01/2019 12:18

I think the attitude of doing something nice out of spite is a reflection that many of these people think any fundraisers done by the women here must be done out of malice rather than genuine reasons.

A lot seem young (child free) and simply don’t believe that feminists actually care about children (hence the idea trans kids are hated) and so fundraise for evil or stop funding because of evil rather than a more nuanced take that adults are genuinely concerned how children will fare in the future.

When you have one set of voice flat out lying and repeating falsehoods it’s easy to feel people are gunning for mermaids for the wrong reasons, but actually people are concerned and want a deeper investigation rather than uncritical praise. Probably because we’ve seen these situations before and the end results have been harmful.

Thingybob · 20/01/2019 12:26

I'm pleased that HBomberGuy has raised so much money for two reasons. Firstly it is preferable for Mermaids to be funded by private donations rather than public money and secondly, by raising so much money he has also raised awareness of how divided the public are on the charity. Surely if it makes a teacher stop, think and do a little more research before blindly repeating jelly baby stories or causes a parent to look more deeply before picking up the phone to the Mermaids helpline, then that must be a good thing?

PencilsInSpace · 20/01/2019 13:08

Ah well, if public funding is hard to come by of course it makes sense to rely on the goodwill of obsessive gamer dudebros and fetish drag queens.

Puppies and sweeties don't grow on trees, you know!

Interesting link to a scientific letter written by a paediatric consultant regarding use of pubity blockers. I know it's science so probably should be dismissed as "rubbish" I mean, what do Doctors know? They aren't Professors of Bantz and Feelz after all.
Confused

Mermaids were complaining the Times accused them of recommending cross sex hormones on the first visit. Actually it was "just" pubity blockers.

Such a noble cause.

I see Mermaids are still linking to Helen Webberley's 'Gender GP' Blush

Webberley was recently convicted of running an illegal gender clinic for children. She prescribed cross-sex hormones to a 12 year old.

I imagine this is the sort of thing Mermaids will be spending the money on:

I think they'll need the money to re write all that Pencils, nobody will politely accept the jelly baby argument any more. Can't wait to see the revamped training, will it include liquorice allsorts or sherbet fountains?

GinSoakedGina · 21/01/2019 01:37

Up to $264k. Thanks Graham.
