Vice: how an online forum for moms became a toxic hotbed of transphobia

broadly.vice.com/amp/en_us/article/a3mn9k/mumsnet-uk-mom-forum-terf-transphobia-feminism

Thought people might be interested in this article. One thing that strikes me is the 'reducing women to their biology' argument. Don't transwomen 'know' they're not male because their body feels wrong? Then it is about biology isn't it? Otherwise why do they think they're female?

Well, I'd take that article as a backhanded compliment to the fact that Mumsnet is not only a safe space to discuss these issues, but that what is said here has influence. Otherwise, there would be no need to write a biased article full of sly digs & innuendo in what I'm sure will be a failed attempt to discredit these discussions.

FWIW [waves to the mole], I kept tripping over MN while looking for recommendations on bedlinen. One time I came here, I accidentally found myself on this board and thought 'bloody hell, these women are good!'. Good as in articulate, passionate, informed, determined. That's what spurred me into signing up, quite recently.

If Vice wants to complain about another site on the internet, they can fuck off and clean their own house first.

since baking recipes seem to cause upset, how about this pomegranate cosmo recipe from barefoot contessa. it's what i plan to get pissed on on christmas day.

festive innit?

Ereshkigal · 06/12/2018 19:07

MOMS! Ikr! Why don't they just shut the fuck up! Who said they could talk about politics and have unapproved views about gender ideology?

OrchidInTheSun · 06/12/2018 19:07

Good point about kiwi farms. Despite the fact that they really do use horrendous language to describe trans people, I cannot find a single article about how mean they are.

Weird that, isn't it?

BlackForestCake · 06/12/2018 19:08

Dreadful hatchet job. I'd never heard of Eve Livingston before but now agree she is indeed a witless handmaiden.

There’s no attempt to even make an argument. Just hand-wringing over the awful women who dare to do things, such as referring to men as men, which she and her mates have unilaterally decided are unacceptable. That’s not how it works love.

To read this you’d think it were Mumsnet users doing illegal things, whereas Eve happily minimises what was done by former staff who did actual illegal things.

OwThatsGottaHurt · 06/12/2018 19:08

Hestia - thanks for that Greer quote. It has particular relevance to me with something going on at work this week. I think I may have to use it.

AncientLights · 06/12/2018 19:09

Well I did try to wade through that pile of shite but, despite being fortified by a G&T, I had to give up. Of course we focus on this trans menace, they're trying to erase us FFS. What are we supposed to do - let them take over?

BruceAndNosh · 06/12/2018 19:09

I don't think I've ever mentioned my own race on MN.

I also think it's hypocritical of Vice to assume I'm white based simply on the colour of my skin. They have no Idea what ethnicity I self identify as.

sackrifice · 06/12/2018 19:10

I made a top notch coffee liqueur last festive season. Thoroughly recommended. And top top it all off, i hardly drink. I didn't finish the half bottle until late summer.

Snap, Retired I came a couple of months ago for information re the GRA consultation and stayed because of the hugely invigorating quality of the debate.

BlytheSpiritsSpirit · 06/12/2018 19:12

The addition of hotbeds has really brightened up the place.

Ereshkigal · 06/12/2018 19:13

Yes. The "brave whistleblower" narrative for a sneaky doxxing female ally of aggressive male people, who put MN users at risk without a second thought is nauseating. And shitty.

Nightcloud · 06/12/2018 19:13

Still now more people will seek out the forum. Cheers for the advertising! Streisand Effect. Nice.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 06/12/2018 19:13

I'm so making that liqueur sackrifice

With permission I’d like to order some nice bed linen for the hotbeds. Any preferences? I’m torn between Htc cotton or something snuggly - a soft terry? I’ll have a look on MN recommendations.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 06/12/2018 19:18

I requested this ages back and heard nothing from MNHQ

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3302495-This-is-how-traffic-to-the-feminism-board-has-increased

hackmum · 06/12/2018 19:20

We should stick to discussing nappies and dealing with temper tantrums (the kind thrown by 2-year-olds, not 20-something transwomen).

On the plus side, dealing with the temper tantrums of two year olds is excellent practice for dealing with the whiny, self-absorbed narcissistic temper tantrums of the average TRA.

Popchyk · 06/12/2018 19:21

That first paragraph about John McDonnell and his mumsnet webchat.

What on earth has that got to do with anything? The article didn't even mention what he/we discussed.

And then the rest of the article makes no mention of it again.

It looked like that paragraph had been put in by mistake. Or some really laughable "this is actually a serious article about modern-day politics innit" thing which is swiftly abandoned after the first paragraph.

Most odd.

AnyOtherPerson · 06/12/2018 19:21

God Joss Prior comes over as a loon in that article doesn't Joss?

Yup. The paranoia running through that article is impressive. Who the fuck wastes their life monitoring a women’s rights board?

People who hate women, that’s who!

Bowlofbabelfish · 06/12/2018 19:22

Twelve fold increase to traffic landing via feminism. Doesn’t include people who go in via ‘I’m on’ or talk home then come here (I think.)

So pop another few zeros on that few hundred.

After all, if we are a toxic teeny echo chamber, there’s no need to monitor us is there? We’d be irrelevant.

Of course if MN was hundreds of thousands of women of all colours, religions, creeds, races and classes, united by their shared biology and what it means for them in today’s world then that’d be a powerful force wouldn’t it? What a lovely thought that is. White women, black women, brown women, atheist women, Christian women, Jewish women, Irish women, British women, women from all over the world. Rich women, poor women, all levels of education and experience. All women together. Talking. Sometimes about prams. Sometimes about mobilising to counter the biggest threat to their rights in the last century.

FABULOUS. What a power for good! Imagine if women the world over could do that, transcending the usual things that divide like politics, national boundaries and religion.

Imagine if just 1% of women worldwide united. Or more. Just imagine.

Just imagine, Jess. Wouldn’t it be great?

MrsFogi · 06/12/2018 19:24

So many questions...
How do they know what colour the members of this toxic hotbed are? Does it even matter what colour they are, surely what is important is what colour they feel?
How big is this hotbed?
Can women dismantle the patriarchy from this bed?
Is a "toxic hotbed" the modern day equivalent of a "coven of witches"? Why did they not interview some of us who actually went through the portal that appeared a few months back? Will that feature as an episode of Dr Who?
Oh and.....if it's not my biology that makes me a woman, what should I check to work out whether I am male or female? All help gratefully received I am in limbo......

Dothehappydance · 06/12/2018 19:27

Now this bed linen? Can we go with a Christmas theme this week?

But a more important discussion is how often we need to wash it.

Bowlofbabelfish · 06/12/2018 19:29

Yeah never mind our race- do you have a loo brush?

AspieAndProud · 06/12/2018 19:29

Interesting she keeps focusing on posters being white, which has nothing to do with gender.

I don’t know what the demographics of the trans community are but most of those I’ve seen are white. They get the play the race card when they stop picking names like Lily.
