Vice: how an online forum for moms became a toxic hotbed of transphobia

broadly.vice.com/amp/en_us/article/a3mn9k/mumsnet-uk-mom-forum-terf-transphobia-feminism

Thought people might be interested in this article. One thing that strikes me is the 'reducing women to their biology' argument. Don't transwomen 'know' they're not male because their body feels wrong? Then it is about biology isn't it? Otherwise why do they think they're female?

Ugh, I can't be arsed. Does it say anything about mumsnet being a radicalisation portal...you know for those of us who have been here forever but were drawn into the cult.

TetherEnding · 06/12/2018 18:46

Am I the only one getting a bit turned on by being referred to as a "toxic hotbed"? In Vice of all placed Grin

runs away to have an extra hot flush

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 06/12/2018 18:47

God Joss Prior comes over as a loon in that article doesn't Joss?

The rhetoric Prior refers to here is, she explains, “essentially second wave—and what might now be known as ‘white feminism.’

mmm, cos every poster here is white innit Joss? also, what's wrong with being white? so sick of the reverse racism of 'white' being used to dismiss views.

and second wave feminism, known by literally no-one as white feminism

  • Alice Walker
  • Angela Davis
  • bell hooks

frankly i think even kimberle crenshaw may regard herself as a second waver

GassyAss · 06/12/2018 18:48

Hi Christine! I reckon most of us here were just mooching through life, asking advice on nipple hair or summat, then the GRA came along and us moochers thought WTAF! I’m not sure about this, I have questions. 🙋🏻‍♀️
Then we ask polite questions and low and behold, immediately hit the bigotry bingo and get labelled TERFS.
When someone in the Internet starts calling you names then you start to look for allies. MN is a place for allies. If that’s radical feminism then I’m happy to be a radical feminist.

Squall · 06/12/2018 18:50

Terribly sorry, who is Joss?

HamiltonCork · 06/12/2018 18:51

Women - know your place.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 06/12/2018 18:52

some no mark who is a transwoman and also obsessed with MN Squall

self appointed 'community 'leader'

Squall · 06/12/2018 18:52

Is anyone allowed to be a chilled out feminist who wants to talk about serious issues?

deepwatersolo · 06/12/2018 18:53

And to this day nobody has ever been able to explain to me, why I should take anyone seriously, who cannot define what a woman is.

HumberElla · 06/12/2018 18:53

Oh that’s nice, we could do with a nice warm toxic hotbed in the radicalisation portal. It can get a bit parky in there at this time of year.

Christine, you may be dismayed to hear that a few hundred is probably something of an underestimation of our numbers.

terryleather · 06/12/2018 18:54

Joss and Christine, any views on a certain branded cereal served with banana and hot milk?........

sackrifice · 06/12/2018 18:54

Terribly sorry, who is Joss

Eggsactly.

NotTerfNorCis · 06/12/2018 18:56

Joss was gutted the other week when Joss denounced the 'fake Glinner' on Mumsnet, and everyone over here ignored Joss. Think Joss was relieved when Joss realised Joss had been wrong and Joss had nearly made a massive fool of Jossself.

Hi Eve! Moral of the story: don't search on your own name.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 06/12/2018 18:59

It's another "Boycott a free paper" situation isn't it, let's give Mumsnet page views and draw people to the site.

Ereshkigal · 06/12/2018 19:01

Interesting she keeps focusing on posters being white, which has nothing to do with gender.

It's what you might call a dog whistle. To dismiss the idea that we might have any legitimate concerns or feelings anyone should care about.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 06/12/2018 19:02

Hi, Joss. Fuck off, Joss.

sackrifice · 06/12/2018 19:02

I like a hotbed.

If it wasn't for hotbeds, Victorians wouldn't have had pineapples.

VickyEadie · 06/12/2018 19:02

I'm not even a mum...

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 06/12/2018 19:03

Oh, and Eve? You can fuck off, too.

Binglebong · 06/12/2018 19:04

I just don't think that's true. I'd love to see some data from MN re which route people come to MN from, which boards they spend the most time on etc. Has anyone any seen this or similar data?

I requested this ages back and heard nothing from MNHQ. But I have recently seen people referencing this board as one of the biggest drivers to the site so maybe something has been released? If so I'd be grateful if someone can link.

Since they mentioned recipes being used to derail pro trans threads I was wondering if there are any good Christmas bakes anyone wants to share?Grin

Ereshkigal · 06/12/2018 19:04

They're just such boring, unoriginal identikit articles. I thought it was the previous one until I looked at the date, and until Joss spoke. Did she write it on a bus?

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 06/12/2018 19:04

I’m not white! How dare they mis-race me. Literal violence, I tell ya

GrinitchSpinach · 06/12/2018 19:05

yy, Hestia, the Greer quotation is very apt here.

welshgendercrit · 06/12/2018 19:05

It’s all about biological essentialism which is at the heart of reinvigorated radical feminism. When you believe that what makes a woman is only her biology, the result is a policing of womanhood and a very narrow academic and ideological perspective of what feminism and gender should be.

Spot on, Christine. Grin As Posie Parker's famous poster said "Woman - adult human female" - you know, the kind who is actually or potentially a Mum. As a newly radicalised grandmother in her 70s, I'm enjoying the comforting warmth of this toxic hotbed on these cold winter evenings. Wink
