Now I need Atkinson to come out as GC for this reason alone.

Rowan atkinson was one of the leading voices against Blair’s proposed blasphemy laws. He already has form for fighting against the codification of belief.

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 25/10/2018 09:23

Bloody hell. When I looked at that, I assumed it was from the 70s when the moral compass was wildly swinging all over the place. But no, it was apparently June 26th, 1997, in The Guardian (who would have guessed that!). How was that letter not career-ending?

First Google hit when I was searching, article in the Mail by Peter Hitchens. Third, this article by guess who, Julie Bindel, a woman whose moral compass has never wavered, I'm guessing. Out comes my trusty cartoon again. I believe it comes from gender critical Reddit but I don't know whose it is originally.

FesteringCarbuncle · 25/10/2018 09:25

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Tatchell part of PIE or at least supporting them?

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 25/10/2018 09:35

Supporter, I would think. Appalling error of judgement even in the 70s but to ignore all the evidence that had emerged by the late 90s is astounding to me. I'm younger than Tatchell, but not by much, and there was plenty of discussion in the media and I assume a lot of academic literature on this. It was something that started to get a lot of attention from the mid to late 80s, if I remember correctly.

TwistedStitch · 25/10/2018 09:39

How were those views not career ending? Strange that those two blokes didn't mind sharing a platform with someone who advocates joyful sex between adults and 9 year olds.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 25/10/2018 09:47

Side issue to this thread, but in that I Am A Woman' twaddle, the line 'the future is not female' really stood out. That's what this is. I am so angry.

Bowlofbabelfish · 25/10/2018 10:07

Can someone provide a clearer picture of the tweet of Jess Bradley holding two fingers up? The trans flag on the right obscuring the person’s eyes - I can see the word смерть which means death in Russian. What does it say underneath that?

R0wantrees · 25/10/2018 10:25

Bowl It is disputed that its JB.

Ok. I suppose it could be anyone wearing a mask... ;)

I’m interested in whatcthe text says though...

ChattyLion · 25/10/2018 11:06

don I don’t think it’s demonising anyone (which sounds like making them a hate figure which I am not doing or critiquing someone baselessly which I am not doing either) to point it out when they support a radically anti-women agenda.

Tatchell was a hero of mine for decades until that TRA GIRES blog post and indeed I had hoped that Tatchell, as a through and through supporter of gay rights AND free speech, with a significant amount of public support and affection based on what he has achieved, would see this TRA shit show for what it is and publicly call it out.

But no. He’s in support of this TRA agenda. And is seemingly averse to commenting further on the misogyny of this agenda- which is most odd for someone of his personal bravery. Unless he actively agrees with it, of course. Sad

As I posted above, there is still much to admire in his work to support gay rights which a lot of people have benefited from (and which Tatchell himself has undoubtedly personally suffered for).

WTF though... that letter about joyful sex between adults and 9-11 year olds from Tatchell. That is a horrendous whitewash of abuse on children. I didn’t know about that letter before now.

GCAcademic · 25/10/2018 12:06

Re. Peter Tatchell - in 2015 he signed this letter to the Guardian about censorship, along with a large number of academics, including Mary Beard:

www.theguardian.com/theobserver/2015/feb/14/letters-censorship

Due to a huge pile-on from transactivists, he and Beard ended up recanting, both publishing statements accordingly.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/10/2018 12:09

It's interesting looking at that list to see who's stood firm and who's been squashed.
Finn Mackay wouldn't sign something like that today.

donquixotedelamancha · 25/10/2018 13:12

critiquing someone baselessly which I am not doing either

Indeed, I certainly agree with the criticism.

My post should have said 'a danger of'. The way it's written implies more than I meant.

I was trying to make a general point about the distinction between honest disagreement and the AWAs who launch personal attacks.

That said I was clearly wrong to apply that to Tatchell. Can he really have publicly admitted to knowing about and not reporting paedophillia?

ChattyLion · 25/10/2018 13:50

don I think we’re both saying the same thing- at least I hope what I said came across as honest disagreement (with Tatchell’s views on the TRA agenda and trans-generational sex, ie adults abusing children) rather than personally attacking him.
Tatchell’s got a lot of fantastic qualities but I now see that not all of his politics is politics that I agree with and I wish he would be a lot more open about his views when asked. I don’t get why he doesn’t own it if he’s believes it, or maybe he doesn’t believe it in which case he should speak up. He’s a great human rights campaigner but with some major, cant-get-past-them political flaws IMO.

Manderleyagain · 25/10/2018 15:05

I've never seen that PT letter before. Blimey. I knew he was criticized for publishing an essay in a book that turned out to be edited or published by a pie person, but I thought that was back in the 70s when pie was a thing. The 1997 letter shows how much has changed in public understandings of child abuse. I assume (hope) that was a minority opinion even then. If there had been Twitter in 1997! But it shows how some changes in attitude are imperceptible while you live through them. He is much creepier than I knew.

donquixotedelamancha · 25/10/2018 16:04

at least I hope what I said came across as honest disagreement rather than personally attacking him.

Absolutely it did. It was my poor wording that implied otherwise. Apologies.

Nofedora · 25/10/2018 16:46

According to a past twitter quote from the poet with a penis she can't believe there is anyone "who doesn't like dick".
Well, Lesbians and Hetrosexual men seems to spring to mind but anyway it seems the future isn't female but intersectional....

PipGoesPop · 26/10/2018 00:27

Clearly PT doesn't give a shit about 9 year old kids having sex with adults either.

How the fuck did he get away with that shit, dressing it up as some kind of academic studies shite?

1997 was literally yesterday, we all knew it was as wrong then as it is now. Fucking disgraceful but whatever right because he did so much for the gay community.

I'm not sure about this being Bradley, look at the eyes. He was named as someone else on another thread.

nottakingthisanymore · 26/10/2018 10:05

Looks like the person in the video blocking the entrance to a meeting from earlier in the year. The one that stopped Julie Bindell getting in.

nottakingthisanymore · 26/10/2018 10:10

Ignore me. I’m getting confused with the one protesting in Manchester recently.

Yes, please see my comment upthread.
It seems widely accepted now that this isn't JB.

Bowlofbabelfish · 26/10/2018 12:07

Hmmm I still can’t read the text. I wonder what it says?
