If he's got a lot of those banbers of himself with angel wings he could probably flog them before Halloween which might make up for cocking up so spectacularly.

Manderleyagain · 24/10/2018 21:05

In the Twitter threads about this a trans advocacy account called something like transiness said it was annoying that JB had been no platformed because her work is nothing like the bigotry and zealousy of actual transphobes that trans people need to worry about. It put it in perspective.

Manderleyagain · 24/10/2018 21:10

I felt a bit sorry for the Jeremy. Daft to not to realise it's hard and can be a bit dangerous to take a genuine free speech position in the current world. Hopefully index wont be easily bullied. They piss off scary regimes.

FloralBunting · 24/10/2018 21:21

Well, yes, that's the big takeaway for me. 'Speaking truth to power' sounds splendid while you're visualizing yourself as a brave neo-warrior in arty pose.

It's a much less glamorous proposition when you actually start doing it.

terryleather · 24/10/2018 21:55

That fucking statement!

They should just have written Give All The Men All The Things All The Time!!!! it would have been quicker and saved me the pain of having to reading it.

Fuds.

AnyFucker · 24/10/2018 22:06

"The Big Boys made me do it..."

Pitiful

Freespeecher · 24/10/2018 22:10

Just to go back to the Bindel / Sarkat thing from page 1, that whole 'Oh, you horrible bigots only care about XXXX when it serves your purpose' approach really grinds my gears.

I have a dim recollection of, I think, Laurie Penny using it about Rotherham victims.

It's so typical of the approach taken by that element of the Left - no attempt to address the rights or wrongs of an issue, just shut down the argument by bulldozing / shaming the opposition into submission.

Increasingly it won't wash, then they suffer even more as they've grown lazy, can no longer argue properly and get shellacked when up against a competent opponent.

Freespeecher · 24/10/2018 22:11

Sarkar not Sarkat! But the point still stands, dammit!

deepwatersolo · 25/10/2018 06:44

Yeah, Freespeecher it was the same in Germany with Cologne. Self ID-ing liberal feminists who for years had (rightly) pointed out what needs to be changed in our culture and social norms for men to learn not to harrass and catcall and ‚flirt‘ without invitarion, in short to change their socialization for the better. suddenly went on the attack when I pointed out that socialization in a patriarchal Culture will also be a factor. They would hear none of it and accused me of just exploiting this and all men are the same irrespective of socialization. (I am on the Left and have cared for women‘s rights and protections all my life ffs).
I always thought tribalism is a conservative and right wing thing and the left was more rational. Wow, was I wrong!

Floisme · 25/10/2018 07:13

I'm still watching Peter Tatchell on Twitter - lots of people asking him if he's going to pull too in protest but the champion of free speech is keeping strangely silent.

Floisme · 25/10/2018 08:16

Sorry - pull out, not pull too.

RedToothBrush · 25/10/2018 08:36

So I wake up this morning and log on twitter. First thing i see

Two Flames @msjenniferjames
Today in TRA world:
1. Herts police said a woman paedophile had a penis
2. An Irish MP said men cd get pregnant
3. A Leicester woman showed a knifeman her vagina to prove she was female.
4. Julie Bindel threatened to shoot a LibDem TRA with a gun.

And it's only Wednesday. 🤠

I was like WTF?

It was in response to this tweet:

Julie Bindel @bindelj
So, I have been no-platformed from an event celebrating 'freedom of speech' and 'speaking truth to power' after trans activists contacted the organiser & said my writing incites 'violence', and is 'hate speech'. Watch this space for full details: @RoundhouseLDN @truth2powercafe

Everyone was asking for evidence of this wrong doing.

Its like living in Trumpworld.

Good on Trevor Philips, good on Index on Censorship.
Good on Julie Bindel (as fucking always). That woman is solid gold and I love her. She actually cares about women, she always puts them first and she couldn’t give a fuck what that makes her look like.
Julie Bindel is a world apart from the rest of these nonentity self-appointed virtue wankers, they would have been lucky to have someone of her calibre as a speaker.

RedToothBrush · 25/10/2018 08:37

And no. That is NOT what liberalism is.

Its about as good as Ash's definition of Communism.

ChattyLion · 25/10/2018 08:39

Redtoothbrush Shock OMG that is a scary list.

RedToothBrush · 25/10/2018 08:39

Its also extremely libelous

AngryAttackKittens · 25/10/2018 08:42

Did they already burn all the dictionaries in Woketopia? It would explain a lot.

RedToothBrush · 25/10/2018 08:43

Angry, I think they just didn't know what one was in the first place. They googled everything and didn't check the source was reputable.

ChattyLion · 25/10/2018 08:49

I admire what Peter Tatchell has achieved for gay rights and his personal sacrifice to do so but his active disregard for the rights of women is shocking.
He actually hides behind GIRES to make his sexist, anti-progressive, pro-TRA rampagingly misogynistic points for him. I was so disappointed to find this out about him. And if he’s not even speaking up now to defend himself on these issues when challenged that is even more depressing. What does he actually stand for? Why can’t he say what he thinks? What is he scared of?

R0wantrees · 25/10/2018 08:58

April Preston's twitter biography states she is director of the LibDem 'Radical Asociation', confirmed:
radicalassociation.org/our-team

On a recent thread a member of this 'radical' group joined to attack Natalie Bird as well as MN posters concerned about how she had been treated.
It was quite an extraordinary exchange & worth reading:

Someone has shared a letter Peter Tatchell wrote which has knocked me sick.

mobile.twitter.com/SophiaSmith222/status/1055142438724091904

TwistedStitch · 25/10/2018 09:05

I'm really hoping his views have changed since then.

UpstartCrow · 25/10/2018 09:08

The Kate Bush song they have appropriated is about childbirth. They are completely shameless.

donquixotedelamancha · 25/10/2018 09:11

his active disregard for the rights of women is shocking.

sexist, anti-progressive, pro-TRA rampagingly misogynistic points

I think there is a danger in demonising Tatchell. I agree with everything said about the effect of his proposals, but I don't agree about his motivation.

Lots of people who should know better have bought the self ID nonsense- if it were obviously misogynist that would not be so. What Tatchell has not done is try to silence opposition. If everyone on the 'other side' had conducted the debate in the way he has then I think we'd already have won the argument.

TL:DR. Tatchell is wrong, but people like de Sousa and Patel are actually bad.

donquixotedelamancha · 25/10/2018 09:15

Just read that letter I cross posted with. If those are Tatchell's views he's a git.
