Channel 4 appoints a new advisor on inclusion

www.channel4.com/info/press/news/channel-4-appoints-sue-pascoe-as-advisor-on-inclusion-x

Sue Pascoe, who 4 years ago was Graham, and who said "that while a man, he was the embodiment of the all-action, red-bloodied alpha male."
Of course, by 2015, this evolved to "'It's funny, I'm 55, I am very hormonal, I am going through puberty again which means that I am just getting to my teenage girl years - so watch out world."

Perhaps those teenage girl years have been outgrown now that Pascoe is 58. Here's hoping.

I'm not convinced this will result in a better proportion of those of us who are female being represented though.

Wouldn't it be nice if some of the recent 'inclusivity' appointments actually included women? By which I mean, the old fashioned ACTUALLY underrepresented, female type human.

I have been observing my local TRAs and acolytes for the last few years and they are OVERWHELMINGLY affluent middle class. It's really striking; the briefest bit of research and you get the private education, nice neighbourhood, parents who are well connected and frequently high up in media/academia. It's so blatantly a made-up load of decadent nonsense that when I see the "inclusion" buzzword I just think oh fuck off Angry

SlothSlothSloth · 09/08/2018 18:38

I believe we have, as in many social justice matters, imported a lot of the thinking re: trans people from the US, where there really is a strong strand of poor trans women, many of whom are are PoC. I don’t see this group of trans people existing in the UK to the same extent, but everyone talks about UK trans people as uber-marginalised nonetheless.

SlothSlothSloth · 09/08/2018 18:38

Sorry that was in response to you pachyderm

Zeugma · 09/08/2018 18:44

Did Sue Pascoe contribute a chapter?

Just had a quick shufti at the first few pages (thanks, Amazon 'Look inside' feature!) and it seems not, @R0wantrees

TheMostBeautifulDogInTheWorld · 09/08/2018 18:44

I am quite surprised they had surgery, which is unusual for this type

It really isn't, particularly for much older transitioners.

pachyderm · 09/08/2018 18:46

I don't see Shon Faye mentioned in the list of alumni of posh schools... Shon attended Queen Elizabeth in Bristol - fees are £14,440 a year.

It's quite a pattern, isn't it?

placemats · 09/08/2018 18:46

I never think of the US when it comes to trans inclusion or politics. To me the US is another country but obviously one for old white men.

R0wantrees · 09/08/2018 18:46

Zeugma Thanks, I know there are a lot of contributers perhaps she will if there's a Vol II?

placemats · 09/08/2018 18:46

That message was to Sloth

placemats · 09/08/2018 18:49

Forgive me if I say that I don't often believe what I'm told.

Especially when it comes to surgery posted on social media.

pachyderm · 09/08/2018 18:49

Agreed slothslothsloth, I've seen a lot of rhetoric imported wholesale from the US and applied to a completely different set of circumstances, inequality levels, welfare provision, racial politics, access to healthcare etc. It's tin-eared.

placemats · 09/08/2018 18:52

Shon Faye is also a trans woman.

She is a trans woman because she was born a male and lived as a male until mid 20s before deciding to wear dresses. Thankfully Shon discarded the blue eye shadow and now prefers the natural look.

A comment below the link I gave re Shon Faye.

While I wouldn't ever wear eye makeup (it's not my thing) I regularly use my wife's concealer. Removing bags from under my eyes or a spot that's particularly angry makes me feel better about the way I look. My wife doesn't care and neither do my family - in fact, it was my wife who first suggested it!

Does this person realise what they are admitting to?

TheMostBeautifulDogInTheWorld · 09/08/2018 19:04

To be fair, rich white men from public schools getting all the notice is hardly confined to the trans world ...

R0wantrees · 09/08/2018 19:06

I am wondering if Sue Pascoe's charity Gender Care UK (GCareUK) raised & distributed any money as intended.

The only reference I can see is that it on Total Giving.
its possible that this site sweeps the information from the Charities Commission rather than it being actively registered there.
www.totalgiving.co.uk/charity/gcareuk

Aside from the grand launch which promoted GCareUK, OLMEC (& Sue Pascoe?) there doesn't seem to much said or done.

Maybe there was a change of plan.

JoanneMumsnet · 09/08/2018 19:09

Hi,

We're getting a fair few reports about this thread and, as you can see, we've already deleted a number of posts which we felt were breaking our Talk Guidelines.

In an effort to get it back on track (and to avoid any more holes in the thread) we're asking if everyone can please take care when posting. The bottom line is, referring to a transwoman who has had gender reassignment surgery as 'he' is inevitably going to draw reports, so in an effort to create a more civil and mutually respectful conversation, we're asking you to please use an individual's name or initials where possible.

We're doing our best (under rather difficult circumstances) to let these conversations happen - please help us out!

Thank you Flowers

@JoanneMumsnet, have MNHQ considered taking the Freedom Programme ‘Fuck this’ approach to these reporters?

TheMostBeautifulDogInTheWorld · 09/08/2018 19:24

Perhaps people are just a bit confused on this particular case, Joanne. You know, because of the Johnny Cash song.

terryleather · 09/08/2018 19:28

hipster I wish they would!

they-who-must-be-obeyed must be obeyed...

placemats · 09/08/2018 19:32

I agree Joanne

Keep this thread up. It's incredibly interesting.

Beautifuldog My female brain is not confused at all. Who is Johnny Cash btw?

placemats · 09/08/2018 19:35

Oh I've just looked up Johnny Cash. He was a white, rich USain male.

placemats · 09/08/2018 19:38

Well, I can't quote Shon re her beauty standards because that would get me deleted. Irony much on a thread about trans women.

VickyEadie · 09/08/2018 19:41

Interesting comment by MN: The bottom line is, referring to a transwoman who has had gender reassignment surgery as 'he' is inevitably going to draw reports, so in an effort to create a more civil and mutually respectful conversation, we're asking you to please use an individual's name or initials where possible.

They told me off for 'misgendering' (even though I hadn't) a person who has not had gender reassignment surgery.
