Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Grace Petrie on London protests

From the folk singer and political activist's Twitter feed:

Here’s what I want to know. I’m a butch lesbian. How come NO TRANS PEOPLE EVER have:
-tried to convince me I’m trans
-tried to stop me using “lesbian”
-interrogated me about whether I will have sex with trans women
-erased me in literally any possible way

And yet, conversely, transphobic feminists have repeatedly:
-tried to stop me using queer to describe myself
-interrogated me about who I’m willing to have sex with
-told me the answer makes me “not a lesbian”
-erased my voice repeatedly in their claim to speak for lesbians

I’m not exaggerating even a tiny bit when I say that the level of harassment I have had simply for opposing TERFs is incomparably more than all the homophobia I’ve experienced in my life. So - you’ll forgive me if I find the “defending lesbians” rhetoric a bit hard to swallow

Leia as you’re Talking so sneeringly about how “words on a screen” can’t possibly “erase” someone or their identity, do you also think it’s equally worthy of derision when GC feminists, including on this board, complain about women being erased by TRAs?

It's literally the only thing GC feminists have to justify their transphobia. Screen shots from Twitter. It's why they are shared to death on here over and over again.

You can't be serious!

There are at least four women who post here, who have been interviewed by the police, as a result of targeted harassment by trans-activists.

LassWiADelicateAir · 10/07/2018 16:50

I stand by my criticism of Petrie’s music. She’s a musician in the public eye who came to my attention purely due to her comments on the lesbian erasure issue

So do I. She uses her status as a political singer songwriter as a reason why anyone should pay attention to her. Her politics and her song writing abilities are both fair game for comment.

Datun · 10/07/2018 16:51

None of whom were prosecuted.

Neither were the transactivists, who targetted them in the first place, I might add.

Targeted harassment online? Or in RL?

Datun · 10/07/2018 17:23

In real life.

What exactly do you not understand about being interviewed under caution? Being told that if you leave the country you will be arrested.

How about having five venues on the trot shutdown?

Clothes sale targeted and shut down.

Or bomb threats. Where the police found the bomb-making equipment.

Or, you know, being smacked in the face repeatedly.

I see that even your patience with this one is wearing thin Datun.

It's plain to everyone with eyes to see that these are not good faith arguments.

Datun · 10/07/2018 17:27

Part of what irritates me about this whole thing is they wilful ignoring of millennia of women's experience of men.

When men say they're going to beat and rape you, women listen. It's intimidating and frightening for women, precisely because of how often it's true.

Datun · 10/07/2018 17:28

I've concluded that patience is just about the most effective weapon one can have. Fortunately, I'm fully tooled up.

daimbars · 10/07/2018 17:32

The women were interviewed under caution? Why was that?

nauticant · 10/07/2018 17:33

Well, as the wiser people on this board say, "think about the lurkers". Every time a clearly disingenuous post comes up maybe a few more will think "why is that person trying to deflect/mislead?" and then start doing their own reading.

daimbars · 10/07/2018 17:33

Is this it's pertinent to note there is another thread on here titled 'Are we the baddies?'

A glimmer of self awareness is starting to shine through.

stillathing · 10/07/2018 17:36

Datun when I first came here under a year ago (via the guiltily addictive cheeky fucker style threads) it was your persistent, calm and rational posts that made me sit up and pay attention. Thanks. I think. (my life was easier before)

Datun · 10/07/2018 17:37

The women were interviewed under caution? Why was that?

Eh? Because they were targeted by trans activists.

We've literally just had this conversation!!

Melamin · 10/07/2018 17:38

There are answers to all those questions in plenty if you read the board Wink

Datun · 10/07/2018 17:38

stillathing

Glad to hear it.

stillathing · 10/07/2018 17:40

But don't you ask yourself that, Daim? I do, many times a day. I was a student until recently and that kind of an attitude, a willingness to admit what I did not know, and question what I thought I did know, was one of the reasons I was able to gain a good mark in a tough subject.

daimbars · 10/07/2018 17:43

Why would you be interviewed under caution if you were a victim?

The only time you would be interviewed under caution is if you were suspected of committing a crime.

nauticant · 10/07/2018 17:46

It's at this point stillathing that if you reflect on the similarities between gender identity ideology and religious ideologies you'll find things make more sense.

daimbars · 10/07/2018 17:46

Of course stillathing - I came on here for that very reason. I wanted to understand the other side of the debate and if there was any reasoning behind it.

And there were some intelligent and articulate arguments that could almost have persuaded me.

Unfortunately they got drowned out by transphobic bullshit + repeatedly being insulted, troll hunted and abused didn't help.

TellsEveryoneRealFacts · 10/07/2018 17:47

I can hear Datun counting to 1,000,000 from here.

ElenOfTheWays · 10/07/2018 17:50

😮........😮..........😮.............

Just speechless here.

daimbars · 10/07/2018 17:51

I do feel sorry for Datun in a way, it must be hard to constantly defend the indefensible.

TellsEveryoneRealFacts · 10/07/2018 17:54

I love your posts daim - they are just so...peaky. Like golddust.
