Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

How will we know if we have lost good women?

loveyouradvice · 13/06/2018 20:26

I fear we will lose some of our strongest most vibrant voices, torn down by the current wordspeak policies..... Can we keep a record here of those we lose? I do NOT want to forget them.

I thought it was so telling that the GC would have happily kept all language (even the abhorrent Cis and Terf) ... while the trans-allies wanted to curtail as much speech as they possibly could....

To all strong GC voices - Please DO NOT leave us - your voice counts for more here than on any other forum.... Mumsnet is watched by the world and will be responsible for our keeping women and girls safe .... even if you have to clip your wings a little to get your message across, please hang on in here ... IT IS SO IMPORTANT

I feel that the comment bewilderness quotes above is uncivil to the poor English language, which has surely done nothing to deserve being abused in that manner.

Maryz · 14/06/2018 01:49

I think the poor English language has greater problems to worry about than a quote from bewilderness.

What will none of the words in it actually meaning anything and all Grin

thebewilderness · 14/06/2018 01:52

Just so you know I have often been told by mods these past few weeks that a post I reported does not violate talk guidelines in spite of the fact that when I said the exact same thing WORD FOR WORD my post was deleted for violating talk guidelines.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 14/06/2018 06:18

The whole thing is ludicrous. MN have to realize these people will never stop trying to drive women from the feminist board. It will be something else soon that bothers them and MN will make yet ANOTHER statement trying to curtail women's freedom of speech.

I fully expect to be banned - I cannot in good conscience call a man a woman. It's laughable. Or it should be. Instead we have some people taking this crap as truth.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/06/2018 06:25

Shit! What the fuck happened? I log off at about 6pm... I can see I have some catching up to do!

I think I am about to be bitterly disappointed!

Baroquehavoc · 14/06/2018 06:25

I've just seen a reply on Graham Linehans twitter saying "They haven't shut it down though. People can still go on MN and discuss being a mother."

It is only a matter of time before we have a list of approved topics to talk about. And it's not going to include women's rights.

AngryAttackKittens · 14/06/2018 06:36

Women, know your place! FFS.

I hope HQ is happy with this entirely predictable development.

ISaySteadyOn · 14/06/2018 06:44

I lurk mostly. I don't have half the eloquence of posters like AAK, APAB, Datun and thebewilderness, I am aware enough of my limitations. I admire all of you immensely so if you decide to leave, I respect that but I hope you don't. You are definitely wanted and welcomed here by many, I know.

Bespin · 14/06/2018 06:49

You can always tell on here when you are being policed by people who do not like. What you say as they will be critical of your gammer or spelling as if that undermines your points. This is a soft type of bullying and usually means that they have nothing to say against your points but still wish to attack you for saying it. It as the effect of silancing people who's first language is not English and people like myslef who are dyslexic from participating in any form of debate.

mrsreynolds · 14/06/2018 06:57

I'm here.

Biology is not bigotry.

Oscarino · 14/06/2018 07:00

I’m a lurker and I’m delurking to say thank you to all the women who have saved me from despair by saying “you’re not crazy, this is actually happening.”

By saying “ words have meaning, there is a difference between truth and lies and we recognise gaslighting and emotional abuse for what they are.”

Because sometimes I have felt like I must be going crazy - surrounded by blank-eyed robots who just keep repeating lies as if they were truth and selling women out for an ideology that they don’t even try to explain or justify.

I hope no one is banned and I will be sorry if anyone decides to leave because I feel like the women on this board are so important

thebewilderness · 14/06/2018 07:07

If you are that easily silence the internet might not be the place for you.

enoughisenoughtoday · 14/06/2018 07:18

People are right about the word spreading. This is a leading article in the Times today:
www.thetimes.co.uk/article/assaults-on-free-speech-are-led-by-the-left-l2r8t9t9p?shareToken=ac46a62e9b536fec827a7f829b866706

He absolutely nails what is happening to feminists.

MNHQ are in a difficult position and must be under extreme external pressure. As Datun says, we just work around the language issues with our customary ingenuity, humour and determination.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 14/06/2018 07:24

Biology is not bigotry.

Spot on.

btw there's a women-only private subreddit that's been established by GC feminists from the gendercritical public subreddit. I'm using it to supplement, not replace here. I need women-only spaces in my life.

Oscarino · 14/06/2018 07:26

I’ve reread my post and realise how much it sounds like I’m thanking you all for supporting me out of an abusive relationship. Honestly that’s how it feels sometimes.

It’s scary when you try and explain how something is damaging you and you realise the person you are speaking with, who you are asking for some understanding just quite simply does not give a fuck about you

Bespin · 14/06/2018 07:27

I'm really not that easily silanced I was just pointing out when people wish to attack the poster and not the content of the post.

birdsdestiny · 14/06/2018 07:31

MN is important, it has a wider audience, the others not so much. There are many lurkers and many of us who only comment occassionally. But when it comes to the crunch we stand with you. Look at the amount of people on the Spartacus thread, again!

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 14/06/2018 07:39

thebewilderness

That was potato wasnt it...

I dont think there can be any doubts that FWR is being held to a higher standard than the rest of Mumsnet

Maybe not permanently but definitely for a period of time

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 14/06/2018 07:43

MNHQ are in a difficult position and must be under extreme external pressure. As Datun says, we just work around the language issues with our customary ingenuity, humour and determination.

I pmed someone last night saying similar

Of course mine wasnt as eloquent, and the spelling was off...and ive turned the punctuation off as it was really winding me up

But very similar sentiment

thebewilderness · 14/06/2018 07:46

Yes, Rufus. On the interwebs no one knows you are a potato is goady when I say it but it is not goady when one of the transgender advocates say it.
When I reported Rat for saying word for word the exact same thing I was informed by the mods that it was not goady. I guess because I was the one being goaded it didn't count.

DailyMailClickbait · 14/06/2018 07:56

And again for those in the back seats.

I was a 'trans ally'.

I am still 'pro-trans rights' in the fact that all humans should be able to express themselves freely....as long as it doesn't impinge on others' rights.

But once you witness the potential damage that ally-ship to a lobby that has started to demand the impingement of others' rights, that includes questionable, bullying, demanding, abusive behaviours, that seeks to deny truth, language, the ability of females to define their being, to defend their sex-based rights.

And the appropriation of children's development to validate their adult behaviours and beliefs.

You start to talk.

^^ This.

For those who are leaving, or thinking of leaving, please don't. We need you here more than ever. If you leave then the people who seek to silence us have won. We need to stick together and carry on doing what we are doing - educating, debating, encouraging critical thinking. The latest development is a sign that we are getting somewhere.

numberseven · 14/06/2018 07:57

unfortunately the goal posts have shifted once again

And they will keep shifting. I've already seen on FB that instead of saying "women and trans women" we should be saying "women and cis women"

LangCleg · 14/06/2018 08:07

People are right about the word spreading.

I think this is true. It's as though MNHQ has hung on for all this time and is now falling at the final hurdle.

Anyone who pays attention to BTL comments - and especially on right wing websites such as the Fail or Guido Fawkes - will see a huge difference.

A year or so ago, items on Skepticat's assault were being greeted with Haha - look at the leftards eating themselves. Quicker the better if you ask me with feminists and transactivists being seen as equally ludicrous fringe idiots. Almost all the comments were in that vein.

Now, there are hardly any remarks about "feminazis", hardly any such false equivalances expressed, and most of the comments identity the transactivists as a) in the wrong, b) demanding stuff that is not regarded as beneficial, and c) being as authoritarian as hell.

The Tories were the ones to propose GRA reform but they picked up quite quickly that it wasn't the faux progressive slam dunk they thought it was and have restricted the recommendations made in Maria Miller's report - while otherwise pretty much standing back and allowing Labour, the LibDems and the Greens enough rope to hang themselves with it.

The tide is turning. MNHQ should have hung on just a little bit longer.

LangCleg · 14/06/2018 08:09

On the interwebs no one knows you are a potato is goady

Am I being thick not to know why potatoes (and yawns) are goady? I genuinely don't get it!

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 14/06/2018 08:12

lang

Aaaahhhh bless
