It's against the law to prevent someone's movement, isn't it?

ArcheryAnnie · 22/04/2018 15:23

Bloody hell. JB has ovaries of steel.

I don't understand why the police allowed a group who had nothing to to with that meeting to enter the building or remain in the building, when they were preventing the normal business of the building to happen.

LangCleg · 22/04/2018 15:36

Unsure. But the police powers usually invoked at demos would be obstruction of the highway or trespass. Since these people were not blocking a public thoroughfare, obstruction wouldn't count. And for trespass, the Jam Jar would have to request the police to act - highly unlikely given this venue. Same reason for not buckling to TRA calls for cancellation would lead them to allow the TRAs to protest (unless things got actually violent and out of control, presumably).

catandtheteapot · 22/04/2018 15:47

I have a ticket for the meeting in Newcastle in May. I’m disabled and concerned about the violence. I’m still going though.

Weebo · 22/04/2018 16:33

Are you going on your own Cat?

I'm sure there will be some other people attending who will be happy to go in with you if TRA's are kicking off and you are by yourself.

Maybe send a Tweet out closer to the time?

80sQueen · 22/04/2018 16:48

That’s disgraceful Shock

catandtheteapot · 22/04/2018 16:49

I’m not on Twitter. I’m going on my own yes.

Ekphrasis · 22/04/2018 16:51

I was thinking about going but will have a new born. I'm not sure I'll be awake though the violence might put me off with baby (bf) Unfortunately I don't know anyone else going.

catandtheteapot · 22/04/2018 16:56

I don’t have friends to go with and don’t know anyone. I’ll just wait until nearer the time then see if a group wants to meet up prior to going to the meeting place.

Ekphrasis · 22/04/2018 16:59

Thanks for that link Housemouse, I will watch later.

Cat, I wonder if you could contact WPUK and ask if there's anyway you could find an escort or be allowed to get into the venue earlier?

Ekphrasis · 22/04/2018 17:00

Gosh so lots of documentary makers at the meeting.

Typeractive · 22/04/2018 17:10

Watching this video has made me feel so happy and grateful that there's someone like Julie Bindel standing up for women. She's so brave. I just know that she'll NEVER let these bully boys silence her.

Kneedeepinunicorns · 22/04/2018 17:16

we also have to accept that there are trans individuals who are afraid and that they genuinely feel under threat.

This, along with the comment that some are buying into the propaganda, frames it as a problem that GC women should take on the responsibility for solving.

That also frames GC women as the grown ups who not only can bu morally should put aside their own feelings and needs in order to meet the needs of the more vulnerable and less able trans people - am I the only one who finds this really quite condescending towards trans people as a group? I don't think sticker charts and love bombing is going to help much.

The cry of 'take care of me/us and take a higher share of responsibility because you're a woman' is not a healthy request when it comes from any adult, partners included, and not healthy for women to feel compelled to do.

MushroomGravy · 22/04/2018 17:29

I assume, quite possibly erroneously, that it’s an American thing.

Trends that happen over the past 10 years or so are rarely from any one place. They're worldwide as young people meet and discuss online. Especially in universities. The USA has many flaws but it has a long proud history of free speech and letting anyone spout any old rubbish because you might be spouting shit but I'd die for your right to spout it.

Hate speech laws etc are much more stringent elsewhere than in the US. This is why organizations such as the Westboro Church are allowed to continue in America and would be shut down in the UK. It's something I've always been proud of this is definitely not "American" in any sense. It seems to be a worldwide effort by privileged twenty-somethings who don't have a fucking clue.

JustAnotherSpartacus · 22/04/2018 17:30

The video has had 34 views now. Own goal transactivists (though it might be some time before they realise this)

MushroomGravy · 22/04/2018 17:32

Can someone bring a few cans of Liquid ASS Mist Fart Prank Smell Spray with them to the next event? I think I'd just keep squirting the hallway until they dispersed.

NotTerfNorCis · 22/04/2018 17:33

Trans individuals are afraid because of propaganda from the likes of Giuliana on Twitter. There's not a lot we can do about that if we're being silenced.

MushroomGravy · 22/04/2018 17:33

And maybe a loud CD of old school feminist folk singing about wombs.

MushroomGravy · 22/04/2018 17:34

Oh and on a more serious note next time call the fire department. Totally not legal to intentionally block a fire escape, idiots.

JustAnotherSpartacus · 22/04/2018 17:35

For anyone who can't access it on facebook it has been uploaded on to you tube now www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=sBll45tSKzc

Weebo · 22/04/2018 17:38

Ekphrasis, WPUK say they welcome babes in arms at their meetings but I would be concerned about you carrying a newborn past these thugs if they decide to show up at Newcastle.

Intimidating disabled women and new mothers - I hope they are fucking proud.

Start a thread closer to the time and we will tweet it to WPUK - I'm sure they could organise a way to group together anyone who is attending alone and feeling scared.

Or if there are enough responses on threads about the meetings people could sort it out here on MN?

Weebo · 22/04/2018 17:42

Nooo! I have smelt that liquid ass stuff - You don't want to be messing with it. :o

Plus they will only use it as an excuse for wearing masks in future.

catandtheteapot · 22/04/2018 17:46

Perhaps we should sing Kumbaya really loudly if there’s any trouble. That’s definitely none threatening.

MushroomGravy · 22/04/2018 17:53

I'm sure Kumbaya is a cultural appropriation of someone according to them. It would be literal genocide to sing it.

NotTerfNorCis · 22/04/2018 17:56

The video is spreading. Just saw Ian Dunt retweet it on Twitter. He has nearly 90k followers. :)
