"Wrong bathroom" sign in university toilet

I peak transed a while ago, but then have leveled out recently and taken the live and let live approach in my thinking.

However this sign in a Scottish university bathroom, designed by transpeople, bothers me.

"they are using the facilities they feel safe in - please do not take that right away from them"

So if there's a petite young woman in the toilets beside a 6'3 muscular male appearanced person and she feels uncomfortable, where does she go to feel safe? The disabled toilet?

Also "don't challenge them" sounds wrong to me. Like they're untouchable. What if they're acting inappropriate?

It might as well say "women, you don't have the right to any boundaries'

Datun · 03/03/2018 11:05

Getting harassed by a bloke? You can report that.

Unless he says you can't.

Flimp · 03/03/2018 11:07

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGGH!!! Angry

Freshlylaidterf · 03/03/2018 11:09

I would ignore it. If a situation arose in which I felt uneasy I would challenge and damn the consequences. I will not lose my rights without a fight.

SergeantFredColon · 03/03/2018 11:10

Fucking hell. What about my right to feel safe?!

Freshlylaidterf · 03/03/2018 11:10

Or... take a big black sharpie and write over it what bob said!

jeaux90 · 03/03/2018 11:18

Can I tweet this? I'm going to take a pen and deface these every time I see them.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 03/03/2018 11:29

Fuck sake.

If you can face it ask the university why they are prioritising the comfort of one protected group over the comfort of another protected group.

These posters are excellent though for showing it for what it is. Should peak trans a few more...

PissedOffWoman · 03/03/2018 11:33

What University is this?

They should be named and attention should be brought to the unsafeness and unfairness of this.

Patodp · 03/03/2018 11:34

You're gender identiy and expression are valid

A lot of expression revolves around deliberately making people feel gagged.
Power trip much?

(Also shouldn't it be your gender identity and expression is valid?)

HomeTerf · 03/03/2018 11:36

I wonder if the same sign appears in the men's toilets... Angry

OlennasWimple · 03/03/2018 11:39

The younger generation are doing it right. That sign is fabulous I hope it's in every bathroom.

demirose87 · 03/03/2018 11:50

I couldn't disagree more with " don't challenge them". Just another way in which men can entitle themselves to a private FEMALE space. Disgraceful.

BigDeskBob · 03/03/2018 11:53

"The younger generation are doing it right"

How do you know that the sign was written by 'the younger generation'?

velourvoyageur · 03/03/2018 11:53

I'd probably write a list of things that only female bodied people go through (e.g. endometriosis, periods etc) in the spaces and with no contextualisation to make a 'subtle' comment but then I'm childish.

I wouldn't deliberately stare at and insult anyone because I'm not an arse. Challenging, I would say, has its place - but I doubt many would feel safe challenging a TIM/TRA in a bathroom - I'd feel rather vulnerable if a 'gender questioning', becocked TIM was in the women's loo in the first place so would certainly avoid engaging with them at all. Totally ignoring the notion that the reason women would 'challenge' anyone is because they're uncomfortable wrt their personal safety, suggesting instead that people would have a problem with it because they're bigoted and for no other reason. So disrespectful, staggering lack of understanding.

It's this 'carry on with your day', too - sneaky reinforcement of the message that's behind the same argument re: changes to the GRA being relevant to trans people only and not being a women's rights issue.

velourvoyageur · 03/03/2018 11:54

*They are totally ignoring

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 03/03/2018 11:54

What would I do, as a copper, when I was sent to a shopping centre toilets where a male was perving on women?
What if he told me he identified as a woman?
What if I told you he was leaning over/under cubicle doors?
What if there was footage on his phone of it?

Would that make things different?

So are there any circumstances where a female is allowed to challenge anyone, but in this instance specifically a male bodied person?
To Her and other flat-earthers...

Fekko · 03/03/2018 11:57

If you don’t think someone should be in there... stfu? So no one can be challenged and the assumption is that they are genuine and ‘safe’.

Is the same notice in the men’s loos too? Or the disabled toilets? Or the showers?

Utter nonsense.

Lettucepray · 03/03/2018 11:57

I don't give a shit! I will be challenging, in a non confrontational calm way of course........

Fekko · 03/03/2018 11:58

Where is this notice? I usually have sharpies in my bag anyway (work and child related).

windchimesabotage · 03/03/2018 11:59

I think people are overreacting to this sign. It simply means if someone is minding their own business then you mind yours. It doesnt mean you need to tolerate assault!! If someone of any gender is being inappropriate or aggressive with you then you should report them/tell them to stop regardless of where you are.
This sign is simply regarding people who are just in the bathroom.
Not people showing you their genitals or getting up in your space!! Of course you react to that!!
What this sign is asking people not to react to is simply people going in and out of a toilet. Which I think is fair enough honestly.
