"Wrong bathroom" sign in university toilet

I peak transed a while ago, but then have leveled out recently and taken the live and let live approach in my thinking.

However this sign in a Scottish university bathroom, designed by transpeople, bothers me.

"they are using the facilities they feel safe in - please do not take that right away from them"

So if there's a petite young woman in the toilets beside a 6'3 muscular male appearanced person and she feels uncomfortable, where does she go to feel safe? The disabled toilet?

Also "don't challenge them" sounds wrong to me. Like they're untouchable. What if they're acting inappropriate?

Maybe it should also say 'lie back and think of Scotland'?

Patodp · 03/03/2018 12:02

Oh, when these students enter the real world....

BigDeskBob · 03/03/2018 12:03

Wind, Then why not just make the toilets officially mixed sex? Why the attention seeking notice?

Dozer · 03/03/2018 12:03

I would deface that.

but these toilets too will not have the expectation to be male-free anymore

Well quite. We'll have to assume that every obviously male-bodied person, having adopted no sign of any 'femininity', is at the very beginning of an arduous and traumatising transition which they're gathering up courage to properly launch into, so we couldn't possibly say anything, especially since any male-bodied person who comes into the loo will only have the best of intentions, because exclusively TIM will come into the women's loo, and TIM are universally non-aggressive and lovely and commit crime at the same rate as women, because crime is motivated by whether you have a lady brain or not.
I mean, I'm curious, if the only reason you still present as completely male is because you're worried about the social fallout your transition will provoke, then surely you'd be more than a bit hesitant about using women's loos, but whatever...

I've just got back from somewhere where most toilets were unixex/mixed sex. They were filthy and unsafe.

I stick by the requirement for toilets segregated by sex.

velourvoyageur · 03/03/2018 12:13

Windchimes

So do you see no good reason for the segregation of loos by the sex of those who use them?

velourvoyageur · 03/03/2018 12:13

Xpost :)

Lovesagin · 03/03/2018 12:17

I read this as I can say a man in the ladies toilet clearly thinks IM in the wrong toilet and is making me feel uncomfortable.

Or, I'd just stick the sign in the bin.

And sorry, I see a dude in the ladies toilets, I'll stare my arse off. And make fucking sure he feels uncomfortable.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 03/03/2018 12:20

FFS
"Women know your place" budge up the men are taking it...

Dozer · 03/03/2018 12:28

“if someone is minding their own business then you mind yours”

Biological men using womens loos are not “minding their own business”. They’re using previously single sex spaces. We have single sex spaces for good cultural and girls and womens safety reasons. unisex loos and men being in womens loos make it easier for (a minority of) men who wish to commit sexual crimes, eg voyeuristic, assault, to enter and do so.

senua · 03/03/2018 12:30

And to add insult to injury, the DO NOTs are written on the pink paper.

We have to start using the male toilets (en masse, for safety).

Usedaname01 · 03/03/2018 12:32

If someone's transgender and they literally change their gender then yeah i guess they should go to the toilets that match their sex. But I'd rather not walk into the toilets and see a fully grown man claiming to be a women on the inside but doesn't seem to be doing much about it I'm going to feel uncomfortable. I'm not saying every transgender person is like that but some people COULD take advantage of this situation

Dozer · 03/03/2018 12:36

The men “taking advantage” will probably not be transwomen but common or garden men.

SnibbleAgain · 03/03/2018 12:37
  1. Gents have urinals I am sure many men would be really uncomfortable with a woman / women coming in when they are there with their cocks out, it is unfair to think that they should just act like it's all AOK
  2. Take the sign and put it on the gents
  3. The point about signs for trafficked women - god - I' hadn't thought of that. The men can escort them everywhere now
Lovesagin · 03/03/2018 12:38

I really will put it in the bin if I see a sign like that

DrivinHomeForXmas · 03/03/2018 12:41

Anglia Ruskin isn't a Scottish University, I appreciate that isn't the issue but just wanted to point that out.

hahahaIdontgetit · 03/03/2018 12:41

I would definitely have to nip into the gents to check that they have the same signs above the urinals.....

SnibbleAgain · 03/03/2018 12:42

I have got horrible visions of drunken groups of blokes staggering in and pissing in the sink.

Lots of men seem to think that doing gross / disgusting things to women or the things that "belong" to them is incredibly funny.

windchimesabotage · 03/03/2018 12:42

I dont think this sign is saying that if you notice someone trying to look at women over the doors or generally hanging around being weird or inappropriate, you cant say anything! Of course you can!
If someones in a toilet perving at you then say something.

I really dont think that that is what this sign is about. I think people are willfully misunderstanding it in order to get angry.

It just means that if someone who looks a bit masculine in some way (or vice versa in the mens) just walks in and uses the toilet then leaves, that you should not shout abuse at them or ask them to leave.

Where on earth does it say that if anyone acts inappropriately at any time of any gender, that you should put up with it??

senua · 03/03/2018 12:43

Anglia Ruskin isn't a Scottish University, I appreciate that isn't the issue but just wanted to point that out.

It's not very clear but I think it says ARU at the top but then, at the bottom, designed by students at St Andrews.

Gacapa · 03/03/2018 12:45

I'd rip it down too.

Every time I think I couldn't get more angry...

SimonBridges · 03/03/2018 12:47

If someone of any gender is being inappropriate or aggressive with you then you should report them/tell them to stop regardless of where you are.

But what if that person isn’t being openly aggressive?

So everyone is going to use the toilets where they ‘feel safe’. That means that women, trans women and trans men are going to be using the ladies. That’s fine then, because it’s never like there is a queue or anything.

Lovesagin · 03/03/2018 12:50

The sign is quite clear, I'm not misunderstanding anything, thanks.

Have you ever seen Danielle muscato? Are they a bit masculine looking do you think?
