Some of her aims:

Gender neutral sex ed
Women in leadership making room for transwomen (because you know how many women are in leadership roles)
BUS accepting transwomen to compete as women in sports

Would it be your interpretation therefore that my daughter can only be mentally ill? Is there no possibility that there is another explanation?

Mental illness seems to have more stigma than being trans. As does being gay or gender non-conforming in some communities.

Since you asked about explanations for your daughter wishing to be male, what is her explanation?

VincentVanLowe · 25/02/2016 09:07

I wouldn't get my hopes up about the other candidate, Hareem.

3point14159265359 · 25/02/2016 09:10

She doesn't really look like she's trying, does she?

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 25/02/2016 09:16

Well she cant can she, not when the other candidate top-trumps her on so many minority-isms?

Still waiting to hear about Anal Es's alleged disability btw...

SuburbanRhonda · 25/02/2016 09:16

Maybe trying too hard could be seen as being transphobic in itself.

I think my brain's going to explode.

PrettyBrightFireflies · 25/02/2016 09:17

This is a position to represent women students at a national level, isn't it?
Presumably having access to policy makers, advisors and various influential individuals?

Putting the trans- argument to one side for a moment, is the entire NUS body so entitled that they don't see the value of this opportunity? Or, are these two really the 'best' candidates from the current membership?

Whichever it is, it makes me fearful for the future - students of today will be stewarding society when I'm old and vulnerable!

OhShutUpThomas · 25/02/2016 09:19

I bet they're all terrified to appear transphobic.

FloraFox · 25/02/2016 09:31

The video posted by RiverTam is interesting and was posted in response to the wonderful Peachyoghurt

PrettyBrightFireflies · 25/02/2016 09:32

If there had been a strong field of serious candidates, then Anna Lee could have been compared for her policies and would quickly have been exposed as a weak candidate - all be it one who identifies as a trans-woman. There would have been support, undoubtedly, but the debate would have been wider than just the trans- agenda.

I don't believe that there were a number of strong candidates who pulled out once they knew a trans-woman was running.

VincentVanLowe · 25/02/2016 09:36

I love Peachyoghurt. She is marvellous.

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 25/02/2016 09:41

Thing is, i dont see (well i do, but lets ignore that Grin ) why it is transphobic.

As a biological woman, i want a biologically female women's officer
Just the same as i wouldn't assume that as a biological woman who is married to a man, i could be the LGBT officer (technically i could use the B, but what with my "straight-passing-privilege", everyday feminism says this is a thing i would feel i am taking the pee. Big difference there between someone socialised female and someone socialised male... Anywho, getting off point!) or as a white woman i could represent the racial diversity role (oh wait, thats been done already)

VincentVanLowe · 25/02/2016 09:59

Women as a class have been silenced to a massive degree, not just on the issue of 'trans', and I think that the NUS is a hostile environment for women who centre women. Look at how the WEP immediately scattered themselves into a whole bunch of nothing when they were faced with trans activists. WEP members in general must surely be much older and more experienced and likely have more career or financial stability than most NUS members, but they still caved immediately, even though it created unsolvable contradictions in their own manifesto and even though it was protested by women (who they were supposedly representing).

Representing the common woman is not cool, it's not easy, it's not respected, and it's not generally rewarded either. NUS candidates hoping to boost their CVs and build themselves as a saleable brand have many easier options than representing the generally despised and mocked and ignored and irrelevant common woman.

PosieReturningParker · 25/02/2016 10:11

You'll have to ignore the white old Christian guy!!

But this story is about a new (2014) directive that means schools in the USA have to allow trans students have rights to change in the locker rooms of their choice or face the school district losing millions.

I do wonder if this whole thing is because the group most negatively affected are women, well I don't really wonder I think we all know. Men don't care about a FtM coming into their place do they?

I'm certain that being the Women's officer for the NUS would be a hostile environment, but as a pp pointed out, the quality of candidates for other positions isn't much better.

As a consequence, Anna Lee's lacklustre performance goes unchallenged.

Is she a puppet? A front for a more organised and coordinated pro-trans lobby that are seeking to further their own agenda? And if she is, does she know? Or has she, along with others, been targeted and taken in due to her vulnerability?

I noticed that "sarahlicity" I'd involved in Anna Lee's campaign, and they are in the thick of UK trans lobbying, so there's that. Does Lee know about Sarah Noble's spectacularly dodgy activities on and offline ? Don't know, but it doesn't say much for them if they can't even google the people they are involved with.

If Lee is as vulnerable as she appears in some of the public material, then she could be a victim of a wider agenda - Sarah and others will meet Anna's basic needs to be accepted and valued, and if she doesn't have that elsewhere in her life, she will be open to their suggestions.

This event on the Transgender Prisoners Review is coming up. I'm not able to go, but Mumsnetters with concerns should consider going and asking relevant questions www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/trans-in-the-criminal-justice-system-tickets-21669894237

FloraFox · 25/02/2016 11:34

I see that another straight white autogynephile is helping to admin the Anna Lee facebook page. That explains a lot.

FloraFox · 25/02/2016 11:35

In fact, I would recommend not to post any comments to the Anna Lee FB page if that person is involved with it.

Her appearance is specifically objectionable to me, though.
Because, if she were Laura, could pass as a woman and was an excellent public speaker then who'd know she was trans-?

I have no idea whether many of the women I meet every day are trans-or not, and it doesn't matter.

There are specific circumstances in which the sex of a person is relevant - caring roles, sporting events - and I do think that representing women at a national political level is one of them.

But, this isn't a case of a man trying to disguise themselves in order to get the role, Anna is a biological male, and has taken no steps to disguise that. I'm offended because it implies that I, as a woman, should welcome that.

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 25/02/2016 12:07

"the poster referring to her as Anal E is crossing a line I think."

Meh. I think sticking a bad wig on and claiming to stand for women is crossing a line.

And the double-entendre names thing is hardly original. See stephonknee.
