Some of her aims:

Gender neutral sex ed
Women in leadership making room for transwomen (because you know how many women are in leadership roles)
BUS accepting transwomen to compete as women in sports

Why isn't it a surprise that anna is pro decriminalisation?

grimbletart · 19/02/2016 17:02

Sometimes I feel as if I've strayed into some parallel universe inhabited by escapees from the X factor.

GreenTomatoJam · 19/02/2016 17:02

Gender neutral sex ed? How does that work? How babies are made is about to get a darn site more confusing if that happens! (and if we took it to the conclusion of that, it'll be women and girls bearing the burdens/pregnancies caused by the non-specific education as usual)

All for both boys and girls learning about boys and girls, sometimes segregated if it makes the kids more comfortable though, but sex ed, is sexed, by its very nature!

GreenTomatoJam · 19/02/2016 17:04

increasing the number of diverse women in leadership roles

Yes, there are enough middle aged white males in charge, we need fewer of those.

pandakitchen · 19/02/2016 17:13

What I don't understand is why the Women's Officer role should include LGBT issues, when the NUS have two Specific LGBT Officers.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 19/02/2016 17:15

For fucks sake. It gets worse and worse.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 19/02/2016 17:24

How about focusing on comprehensive, mandatory sex ed in every school first, rather than rural schools still being allowed to push their sexist, abstinence based, biased, religious, anti choice opinions on pupils with no repercussions.

WilLiAmHerschel · 19/02/2016 17:24

Can anyone explain or hazard a guess as to what gender neutral sex ed would be?

SpidersFromMars · 19/02/2016 17:25

It sounds like she wants to fight LGBT issues, and there are roles for that.
It's not what a Womens Officer role is for, though.

sillage · 19/02/2016 17:31

Gender neutral sex education means when the educator says penises can be female, etcetera.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 19/02/2016 17:35

So bollocks, basically? "Girl dick" and "male period" and all that bullshit?

soapboxqueen · 19/02/2016 17:36

Quick Google and it seems that gender neutral sex education means that you wouldn't say man/woman or male/female you'd say person with breasts or a person with a penis.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 19/02/2016 17:40

Oh so children should be taught that only women who were born female can have babies

Women that were born male can not have a baby but can help in making a baby

Brilliant! So what about transwomen who no longer have a penis Confused

iseenodust · 19/02/2016 17:42

Because people should be defined by their genitalia? So how does that work for a transperson who hasn't had all the surgery?
Enough. Aaaagh.

ReallyTired · 19/02/2016 17:46

What a storm in a tea cup over a non job. She can stand, but its up to students whether she is elected. Personally I would be happier if she stood for LGBT officer. She may not get elected as a woman's officer. Is it a requirement to be a woman to stand for being a woman's officer? Do only female students get to vote for a woman's officer?

WilLiAmHerschel · 19/02/2016 17:49

If the student's voting are the same ones that are into that 'no-platforming' thing I think Anna stands a good chance of being elected.

BeetlebumShesAGun · 19/02/2016 17:50

I've never posted on these threads before but this is really starting to worry me now. I totally agree with tea and coffee in that it is eroding women's rights. The more I look and read, the more I am beginning to see that (and excuse my clumsy wording here, I'm not sure of the exact term) liberalism and "political correctness" (i hate using that term as a negative) are starting to bend over backwards to accommodate absolutely everyone over and above women, for example the attacks in Cologne and the trans issues.

I don't understand why activists for trans communities insist on attacking women's causes and rights. It worries me. I would love to discuss this in RL but when I tried to bring it up with a notoriously feminist friend, she was shocked and said she would never have thought of me as trans phobic...

I truly have no problem with transwomen, but like others have said, why does Anna not feel that LGBT officer is more suited to her aims?

Sophie38 · 19/02/2016 17:56

Nothing to do with this thread or topic at all, of course, but suddenly 'Man's crisis of Identity in the Latter half of the twentieth century' sprang into my mind.

And so it begins: Transwoman is running for women's officer of NUS
LilacSpunkMonkey · 19/02/2016 18:02

Are men allowed to run for the role of Women's Officer? If not then I don't see why a trans woman should be allowed either because they're a trans woman, not a woman.

Trans women do not and cannot speak for me, as a woman, anymore than I can speak for them.

ReallyTired · 19/02/2016 18:02

I think that Anna Lee is like Rachel Dolezal who self identifies as black. She has no understanding of what women's issues are. She has never had a period and will never give birth. She can turn male when its inconvient to be a woman.

news.sky.com/story/1503213/rachel-dolezal-says-she-identifies-as-black

A thirsty little black child could self identify as a white child to get to drink out of the drinking fountain reserved for whites in the 1950s. No amount of make up would enable a pregnant black woman to get a seat on the bus in the section for whites. Just as Rachel cannot pretend understand what its like to live under such oppresion, Anna has no idea what its like to be physically weaker than a man.

Real women don't have the option to self identify as men and compete on a fair footing in sport. Transmen are not campaigning for the right to compete as men in the Olympics because they know that they will never be able to compete on an equal footing with men.

MorrisZapp · 19/02/2016 18:05

What a depressing farce. When will all this trans crap be over.

Sophie38 · 19/02/2016 18:06

Well, I felt sorry for Rachel Dolezal because she clearly wanted to support and speak on behalf of black people and there's nothing wrong with that. It's the delusional nature of her behaviour that was strange and a bit wrong.

Same with this - if someone, whoever they are, wants to help out supporting the rights of women, that's marvellous.

To claim that you yourself are, indeed, a woman, is I think going a bit too far. If you're not a woman, that is.

CultureSucksDownWords · 19/02/2016 18:27

Is gender neutral sex education actually a real thing that happens? I've got a child starting primary school soon and I could do without them being utterly confused by this.

WindyMillersProbationOfficer · 19/02/2016 18:30

The NUS is an absolute joke.

Cerseirys · 19/02/2016 18:32

Is it a requirement to be a woman to stand for being a woman's officer

I don't know if it's a requirement per se, but you'd hardly get a straight person standing as LGBT officer or a white person as BME officer, would you?
