Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Feminist crafters, how about we make a MN banner to march behind?

don't you think?

a big cloth one with beanpoles (and tassles at the corners, in manner of old trade union banners) carried by 2 people.

ideally it would be appliqued but could be painted instead.

I think we should do this because:

  1. trade union style banners are a fabulous craft tradition that should be continued
  2. doing one for Mumsnet would bring together old and new in a way that I think would make people look twice
  3. lovely banners increase the visual appeal of a march and thus encourage people to look again and hopefully see the slogany ones
  4. there were so many of us at MWR, probably 40-50 including children, surely a contingent that size needs a banner?

wdyt?

I'll do an i - it will probably be a bit easier for patchwork.

What do people think of my idea that you take all of each letter? So then the list would look like this:

-m - ENGELBERT
-u - dittany
-m - ENGELBERT
-s - stayfrosty
-n - RumpelstiltskinsHat
-e - GhostInTheBackOfYourHead
-t - Flamingo
-f - BoF
-e - GhostInTheBackOfYourHead
-m - ENGELBERT
-i - SCALLOPS
-n - RumpelstiltskinsHat
-i - SCALLOPS
-s - stayfrosty
-t - Flamingo
-s - stayfrosty

Or is that going to be too much for people? I seem to have cunningly cut myself out of the list if we do that though :o

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 10/03/2011 14:23

we could provisionally leave it like that but if anyone else would like to do it they could just go ahead and take a letter over from someone who has several.

have ordered Bondaweb (local shop had sold out).

Good thinking seth. I will take back one of the Ms from Engelbert as I would like to see the banner with some of my (crappy) handiwork on it.

I emailed MN for font details and they have asked for a photo of the finished oeuvre :)

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 10/03/2011 14:28

You are all brilliant.

I can't wait to see how it all comes together, and carry it at RTN :)

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 10/03/2011 14:31

You can put your sloganeering brain to work, Elephants here

Hi, could I possibly take a letter off of someone who has several? Pretty please. Maybe an S off of stayfrosty who seems stuck with the most smiles winningly :)

I'm sure stayfrosty would be happy to give one up :o

This is better as it means no one has more than two letters to do. I will add in different names if more people want to make a letter. I'm sure it won't be the end of the world if the templates aren't identical

I can help! I love doing crafty things and would be more than happy to do a letter or two...

Sorry, am coming a bit late to this thread as have been ill and offline all week Sad

LadyBiscuit · 11/03/2011 11:06

steamedtreacle - I am not going to make any templates until next week because I'm in birthday hell. Do you want to choose a letter from one of the ones that there are multiples of?

I think they are M, N, I, E, T and S from memory :)

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 11/03/2011 11:09

Now that there will definitely be a slogan, that will be a job for someone too, though it's not clear yet how many letters there will be and hence what's the best way to do it (eg if it's Deeds and Words we might applique, if it's We wash ourselves in the blood of the patriarchy another method might be better.)

UmYeahLikeTotally · 11/03/2011 11:27

I'd love to contribute :)
I don't mind about which letters/doing a few of them if needed.

LadyBiscuit · 11/03/2011 11:32

Are we going to be able to fit it all on ssm if we stick to the dimensions you gave earlier for the letters/logo? Cutting out a letter from fabric and some bits of card is about the extent of my embroidery/haberdashery skills!

steamedtreaclesponge · 11/03/2011 11:40

I'm happy to do any! How about 'S'?

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 11/03/2011 12:10

yes, the slogan letters won't be anything like as big as the main letters.

it's quite tight sideways but there is lots of vertical space IYSWIM, so although the main letters are as big as they can possibly be, you can easily have another line or two of writing underneath.

I wanted the main letters to be big to give scope for artistic endeavours, and so it is clearly the mumsnet font, and because they are less defined due to being coloured so need to be big to be legible, but a slogan could be done in plain black, either applique or embroidery, so it can be legible while still smaller IYSWIM.

actually having said that, if the slogan is a short one that divides nicely into two, we might end up wanting to make the logo a bit smaller to give the possibility of putting the slogan either side of the logo - can I get back to you on that once we know what it is? thanks.

Yes of course! We are in no hurry really :) I have been trying to think of a slogan and failing ...

upsydaisysexstylist · 11/03/2011 23:02

Hey thought I had posted here much earlierbut technoological fail. Am very happy to do letters for slogan, also spelling fail. Now must go and feed non sleeping look standing up is much better in the hope it is the huge amounts of oxytocin making me feel tired
