Feminist crafters, how about we make a MN banner to march behind?

don't you think?

a big cloth one with beanpoles (and tassles at the corners, in manner of old trade union banners) carried by 2 people.

ideally it would be appliqued but could be painted instead.

I think we should do this because:

  1. trade union style banners are a fabulous craft tradition that should be continued
  2. doing one for Mumsnet would bring together old and new in a way that I think would make people look twice
  3. lovely banners increase the visual appeal of a march and thus encourage people to look again and hopefully see the slogany ones
  4. there were so many of us at MWR, probably 40-50 including children, surely a contingent that size needs a banner?

wdyt?

Hi all, SSM here.

Apologies for not having been on this thread to answer questions/jolly people along.

I will try to do better and keep things moving over the summer so make sure it's done in time for autumn Reclaim The Nights.

The sad truth is that I have so far received only ONE letter, as well as a fantastic template for the logo.

The letter is, however, a thing of very great beauty. Gold star to StayFrosty.

so the banner will look like this

-S- -----

RumpelstiltskinsHat - have just pmed you my address
UmYeah - background will be cream (unbleached calico colour)

Is there anyone I haven't sent Bondaweb to who would like some? please pm me if so.

OK can I just clarify what is needed? I was planning on doing patchwork so should I put a material back on that and then the bondaweb attached to the material back or just attach the bondaweb to the patchwork bit??? [Haven't done anything like this in about 25 years so apologies for being a bit dense!]

SybilBeddows · 09/06/2011 11:37

I would think you could bondaweb straight onto the patchwork. It'll all be sewn onto the main backing, not just ironed on, so if it doesn't stick perfectly all over it won't matter.

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 09/06/2011 12:19

That sounds good to me! Thanks

AliceWhirled · 09/06/2011 20:49

Are there any letters spare? I wanna do one Grin

steamedtreaclesponge · 10/06/2011 08:42

Argh - right, am doing mine this weekend, no excuses!

Ok, I have finally finished mine! However, I've forgotten who/where I'm meant to be posting it, if someone could PM me the address that'd be great. :)

LibrarianAli · 29/07/2011 16:10

Hello,

I don't know if I'm allowed here as I'm not actually knocked up yet, but I'm doing my bloody best and am sick of lurking in the TTC section.

Anyway, as a nimble fingered feminista with an interest in trade union banner history this looked right up my street, so please may I join in?

Also, if you've time have a look at the 'Procession' album on here - some beautiful and subversive banners.... I particularly like David Hockneys 'Unrepentant Smokers' www.jeremydeller.org/

All the best,

Ali

UmYeahLikeTotally · 15/08/2011 13:27

Bollocks.

Just re-read the thread and realised the letter is going to be zig-zag sewn onto the main banner.

I've gone and sewn hundreds of little beads all around the edge! Shit shit shit :s

ChristinedePizan · 15/08/2011 21:15

I have been hopeless this summer and now the belt has broken on my sewing machine :( But I will do my M next week in a better late than never sort of way

steamedtreaclesponge · 16/08/2011 14:23

Oh, I still haven't done mine Blush

At this rate we'll have to change the banner to Gransnet Feminists...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 23/11/2011 14:03

Hmmm

Has anything happened on this? :)

UmYeahLikeTotally · 23/11/2011 14:55

Oh god, please don't tell me I'm the only one who hasn't bloody finished yet! Blush
