Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Feminist crafters, how about we make a MN banner to march behind?

don't you think?

a big cloth one with beanpoles (and tassles at the corners, in manner of old trade union banners) carried by 2 people.

ideally it would be appliqued but could be painted instead.

I think we should do this because:

  1. trade union style banners are a fabulous craft tradition that should be continued
  2. doing one for Mumsnet would bring together old and new in a way that I think would make people look twice
  3. lovely banners increase the visual appeal of a march and thus encourage people to look again and hopefully see the slogany ones
  4. there were so many of us at MWR, probably 40-50 including children, surely a contingent that size needs a banner?

wdyt?

Oh yes, good thinking seth. I shall await further instruction (and happy to give you my M :o)

LadyBiscuit · 09/03/2011 20:30

Sorry - engelbert is the M person, not you

I would love to be able to help but I can't do anything. I can, however, carry and will do.

My Dad was in the NUM and his branch had a brilliant banner which had their slogan: 'agitate, educate, organise' I always thought that was really good.

Could we have a slogan?

BitOfFun · 09/03/2011 20:51

Slogan-wise, how about something like "The hand that rocks the cradle can also change the world"?

Too much?

Unrulysun · 09/03/2011 20:52

Oh BOF has suggested this. Don't know why I didn't see those posts.

Will this be in lower-case, btw?

EllieG · 09/03/2011 21:21

Oh this is a great idea! My craft skills are non-existent but I wish they weren't so I could do one Envy

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 09/03/2011 21:23

yes, all lower-case

I think Ladybiscuit is doing a template for the logo, rather than all the letters?

LadyBiscuit · 09/03/2011 21:45

BoF - I will do a template for the logo and all the letters but it would be easier if I could just do one for each of the letter so I will send you yours for the letter F :)

BitOfFun · 09/03/2011 21:46

Ooh, you are a glutton for punishment Grin

LadyBiscuit · 09/03/2011 21:47

I'm not really working at the moment so it gives me something to do (plus I have a craft knife and metal edged ruler and cutting board sitting around gathering dust :o)

Slur · 09/03/2011 21:52

This sounds like a fab idea! Not to put any pressure on you but I heard about a march taking place on Saturday called Mothers March assembling this Saturday at noon at Trafalgar Square. Just how quick can you sew...?

mothers' march

BitOfFun · 09/03/2011 21:57

I don't think we could get stuff posted to each other on time, sadly.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 09/03/2011 22:00

We need to be done in time for Reclaim the Night in November Grin

OP posts:
LadyBiscuit · 09/03/2011 22:00

There is no way I can get any templates done by Saturday - it's DS's birthday on Monday and he's having a party on Saturday and we have a big family gathering on Sunday, both of which I have shedloads of stuff to do for. Talking of which, I really should get to bed!

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 10/03/2011 08:51

I think slogan needs further discussion; it might be good to have a proper discussion involving non-crafty MN feminists about it, just to make sure we end up with the best possible; does someone want to start a thread? We might want to use the slogan for other purposes so it needs thinking about quite hard.

the layout I have in mind has quite a lot of spare vertical space so it can be slotted in easily.

what I am thinking is, it can be appliqued or embroidered (or even painted) onto a scroll which can itself be appliqued onto the main banner. The best way of doing it might depend on how long the slogan is - it might be anything from 2 words to a dozen.

meanwhile we can proceed with the rest of the job and then rejig the layout at the end depending on what we end up with.
