Yes it is. But it doesn't surprise me. Until very recently, almost all medical research and research for health and safety (eg for car safety) was done on white men or male models.

Women and ethnic minorities were always an after thought.

BellaAmorosa · 01/07/2023 19:46

Quite poor today v Portugal - I've just watched my recording of it. Portugal were solid and worked hard in defence but they are nothing to write home about. They looked less exciting and fun than they did in the Euros.

As for England, it's amazing the difference Leah and Millie's absence made. Really noticeable that we weren't able to start moves from the back, no big switches of play, no defenders driving into midfield. I found it a bit worrying. We couldn't seem to put together fluent, incisive passages of play. You could see we were had better players, but at the same time we weren't ever going to score! When we lost against Australia we looked pedestrian and sluggish, but this was different again. Maybe Sarina was testing things out - hope so, anyway. I also can't help feeling this is Karma for not varying the team more when everyone was fit - both the fact of the injuries to Mead, Bright and Williamson and having to break in new partnerships less than a month before the WC. Toone and Russo looked tired, or perhaps I should say jaded.

I thought the CB pairing was bizarre - surely an excellent ball-player and playmaker like Alex Greenwood should have been in central defence and Carter, the 1v1 defending specialist at LB? And Morgan ahead of Wubben-Moy? Morgan and Carter are both novices at CB and didn't work together all that well. Our midfield wasn't a new partnership, but they didn't really seem to be working together either. Overall we were better after half time, but we are not the scary side we were this time last year. However, perhaps we will be like the Germans - look dodgy leading into a competition and then go and win the thing!

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 02/07/2023 11:45

I watched the game and wasn't that disheartened really as it looked like Serina was trying out different things.

Portugal defended really well and we had lots of chances.

Yes, we are missing some of our best players, and yes, perhaps she should have rotated them earlier.

Agree, the second half was much better.

Perhaps it is better not to win just before the WC otherwise you go in thinking with a false sense of security.

BellaAmorosa · 02/07/2023 13:54

I was probably just in a bad mood! It was all "nearly", so frustrating.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 04/07/2023 17:55

So happy that Russo has signed. I can't quite believe it.

Let's hope she doesn't get injured like everyone else!

DuncinToffee · 04/07/2023 18:27

That is a great signing for Arsenal

It's good depth for us. She is the perfect centre forward for Eidevall's style and she and Stina Blackstenius will compete and push each other.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 04/07/2023 21:02

It made me laugh that some sexist idiot said that he had never heard of him and that Arteta must know something we don't!

MedSchoolRat · 04/07/2023 21:18

Until very recently, almost all medical research ... was done on white men or male models.

that's not true. At least if your idea of recent is < last 40 years. Females are quite over-represented in many areas of medical research and have been for decades. White people are mostly over-repd, but the real imbalance is that poorer people are under-represented. Too many participants are middle-income/middle social status.

There's an audit somewhere in the medical literature that nicely shows that there's imbalance in every direction in every research subfield, but different directions, so no single trend in gender, ethnicity etc. Except that poor people are quite generally under'repd.

DuncinToffee · 05/07/2023 17:06

We have signed a striker, Martina Piemonte from Ac Milan.

Ooh, exciting! Do you know much about her? I had to google all our signings.

DuncinToffee · 05/07/2023 19:09

No, I don't know anything about her, she is not in the Italy squad so can't check her out at the World Cup either.

Ah, frustrating. I'm a nosey nellie so I'll have a little Google.

All power to them, they are being treated abominably. I hope this sort of thing gets more traction in the media during the competition.

Really pleased we signed Amanda Ilestedt before the world cup as I am sure her price has just increased.

Hoping that she will continue scoring headers from corners when she plays for us.
