Starting New Atkins tomorrow

mrsboogie · 28/03/2010 20:28

I am starting the new Atkins diet tomorrow - it's a bit less full-on than the old Atkins in that you are not just supposed to eat bacon eggs and steak three times a day forever.

Have been trying to lose weight all year -I last three weeks, plateau and then give up. This time I have to stick to it as I am a bridesmaid at my sister's wedding in June. I have already had to tell her that I cannot wear a traditional bridesmaid type dress (I am 5 stone overweight and have a 48 inch boob measurement) but there is still time for me to look a bit less massive if I go full on from here in.

She is slim and has the most beautiful dress - I dread to think what I am going to look like in the photos.

Wish me luck (and will power - no more Friday night wine)!

Has anyone had any mood changes on low carb - i.e. irritability etc? I did last time I tried it and that was when I was still having sugar in my tea and I don't drink coffee so probably not withdrawal symptoms from those

NoobyNoo · 26/04/2010 13:46

Yeah it really is hard to keep the calories up AND get the veg in AND get the protein in. It must be v hard as a veggie.

mozarella, tom & basil & salad for lunch today... and bacon for the calories.

low carb megastore has some yum salad dressings btw. Waldon Farms brand. 0 carbs/calories/presevatives...

mrsboogie · 26/04/2010 14:08

no mood issues at all - usually on a diet I am miserable but because I can eat enough on this one I am fine. I have no problem with sugar cravings though, normally.

yeah the food's boring, sometimes I want cake but I have the motivtion of appearing in my sister's wedding photos in 6 weeks time to keep me strong.

there's been a big box of Thornton's in a cupboard in my house for a couple of months now - I know that one of these days I am going to fall on them and demolish them like a thing possessed..

can't wait!!!!!

i'm not a veggie. but finding the meat a bit full on.

thing i cant get my head round is the cream, not milk on atkins, and cheese!

but this dukan diet allows fat free dairy. so milk, yogurt etc....well so it says anyway, need to go back and have a closer look!

Hello, can I join in please? I am on Day 7 of Atkins, actually doing 'old' Atkins as that's the only book I have, what's the difference to the new one?

Lost 12lbs on it 7 yrs ago (pre kids) so thought would give it a go again. DH doing it too. Both of us got into bad wine and choc every evening once kids finally asleep!

Doing OK so far, riven have no idea how you do Atkins as a veggie, have always wondered that. Am missing crispy things though that make that lovely sound when you bite them (toast/biscuits/crisps).

What nuts are best? Been snacking on peanuts as they seemed lowest net carbs.

Also, are sparkling water and diet coke OK? To feel like a treat.

mrsboogie · 26/04/2010 21:14

riven I don't blame you - I am tempted to go on Cambridge Diet for 6 weeks if I don't see some results this week...

welcome penona I think new Atkins is old Atkins with a few added green and lower carb veg.

I was having Diet Coke too as a treat but I think it may not be such a good idea after all. Apparently artificial sweeteners interfere with insulin/blood sugar etc and prevent weight loss.

Welcome Penona - so what's your first weeks weight loss been?

riven/mrsboogie - i really do feel for you. i know friends who have done it before have said to stay clear of diet coke in induction. might you try this before binning it?

i'm totally baffled how you both haven't lost more. you've done so amazingly well to stick with it for so long.

I'm sooooo tempted to weigh myself to see what sort of damage i did after my boozing bender on saturday but so far staying strong cos don't want to get depressed

what's the cambridge diet?

penona · 26/04/2010 22:47

I didn't weigh myself on the first day, but lost 3lb by Day 4. Not lost any since, but period started today so that might have interfered with it. Going to weigh again on Thu (Day 10)

Noticed PMT was ALOT better than normal this month, no deep depressive gloom for days beforehand, in fact it came as quite a surprise. Think it's cutting out the sugary carbs like cake and biscuits.

Is cream better than milk then? Must have missed that. I must confess to drinking weak tea/coffee with a dash of milk - couple a day - cos I just can't do without it.

Interesting about the not enough calories thing. Not heard of that!

well bugger me if I am not 4lbs HEAVIER this morning!!!

after not eating fruit or anything else I shouldn't. Arrghgghgh. I'm back where I was 3 weeks ago.

how the hell does that work eh?

OP posts:
penona · 27/04/2010 12:24

Oh dear. I have had to loosen my belt again this morning. Perhaps this diet only works when you're childless?!?!?

What's the deal on soya milk? In Tesco they do an unsweetened one which claims to have virtually no carbs. Just had a coffee and it was lovely! Is it harmful in other ways?

pebbles77 · 27/04/2010 12:26

mrsboogie - i'm so so sorry, i'm gutted for you, i can't believe this has happened cos was always of the opinion that atkins was the quickest way of weight loss. are you going to change over to another one or stick with it. are you due your period? fingers adn toes crossed that the weight loss blip stops NOW

riven - fab news, how utterly bizarre. can't quite believe it'ss so irratic.

does anyone here have any long term regular weight loss to keep motivation going?

Tortington · 27/04/2010 13:45

your cant be doping it right if your puttingon weight.

its so disheartening though, many sympathies.

congrats riven.

mrsboogie · 27/04/2010 14:18

I know custardo but I can see that not doing it right might lead to no movement at all but to put weight on would surely require more food than I am eating.

The wee stick says + ketosis all the time .

period not due for a week (although not massively regualr so could be)

I am going to drink gallons of water today and see what happens....

I might throw the weighing scales out the window...
