Starting New Atkins tomorrow

mrsboogie · 28/03/2010 20:28

I am starting the new Atkins diet tomorrow - it's a bit less full-on than the old Atkins in that you are not just supposed to eat bacon eggs and steak three times a day forever.

Have been trying to lose weight all year -I last three weeks, plateau and then give up. This time I have to stick to it as I am a bridesmaid at my sister's wedding in June. I have already had to tell her that I cannot wear a traditional bridesmaid type dress (I am 5 stone overweight and have a 48 inch boob measurement) but there is still time for me to look a bit less massive if I go full on from here in.

She is slim and has the most beautiful dress - I dread to think what I am going to look like in the photos.

Wish me luck (and will power - no more Friday night wine)!

You CAN do it.
This is my second time (1st was for wedding, this time is to shed 2 x baby weight!)

I have Atkins bar for breakfast, salad leaves / sandwich spread filling on top of it dressed with oil, vinegar, lemon juice and cherry tomatoes. Also have tuna mayo, salmon or chopped cooked ham and grated cheese.
I also have 3 egg omelletes cooked with shallots.

Snack wise I have cooked sausages, cooked meats, cubed cheese, pistachios and laughing cows in my fridge

Tea is whatever DC's and DH are having, minus the bread, pasta, rice or potatoes - you have spag bol without the spag basically! curry without the rice, fajitas without the tortillas.....it tastes the same I promise, and think how good you will feel!
Just have waay more veg than usual.
Also Greek yoghurt is gorgeous, you can have a good couple of tablespoons every other day I think, and I drink decaff coffee (if out and about in a cafe I have cream in it, but at home I have milk) and tes, diet coke, water and sometimes cranberry juice. And white wine

I also have a treat almost every day - cake, kitkat, cadbury's flake dessert!! I have lost 2 stone since 3rd January and one dress size.

If you feel like you have got bad breath get the chewing gum out (will make you hungry though)

Stick with it - this lifestyle seems to be working for me

mrsboogie · 20/04/2010 00:05

well done hinnypet!! Your regime sounds very similar to mine.

do you experience any periodic stalls in weight loss or am I just to obsessive on the scales?

pebbles can't say as I've noticed but Atkins (well, ketosis) is supposed to make your breath smell funny and also in some people their sweat as well so it is entirely possible that it is affecting your vaginal discharge.

Also the lack of sugar might affect the yeast that lives up there (this is probably a good thing though).

I wouldn't worry about it (unless its causing err problems

Canitbedone · 20/04/2010 10:33

Pebbles have you no shame! I have noticed when one frequents the toilet that there is possibly a rather different odour... but as Mrs Boogie says I put it down to a combination of the urine and sweat.

Well I weighed myself today, day 11 and so far have lost 6lb, not as much as I had thought considering how knackered I've been feeling at times but as I don't have too much to lose I'm fairly pleased with this.

Mrs Boogie, I've been having a look on the atkins forum and it does seem that stalling around week 3 is fairly common. But if you're patient and just push through you will see results again. Might be worth taking a browse?

Hi Hinnypet, great to see another new face and where's everybody else gone!

mrsboogie · 20/04/2010 11:01

perhaps they are all off checking their nethers for funny pongs!!

well it seems to be on the move again now canitbedone as I have lost another pound or so in a couple of days. That's about 11 or 12lbs in 3 weeks. I have to persist as if I stop now I will just be a stone heavier in a week! Are you drinking enough water - it really does make a difference I find. Sorry if you have already said.

I am drinking plenty of water and my wee is much paler than usual but I am waking up in the morning with a very dry mouth - does anyone else get this?

3 days is too soon to weigh yourself! have you drunk 2 litres of water or other liquids each day? if you don't it won't shift.

OP posts:
Canitbedone · 21/04/2010 17:57

Well done MrsBoogie, pleased to hear that things are on the move again!

I have a terrible dry mouth in the morning considering the copious amount of water I'm consuming throughout the day and I could seriously do without having to keep getting up in the night to pee!

My weight has stalled the last few days and I could feel that I wasn't in ketosis. Today I feel like I'm back in it but I've had to limit my veg to do this... I wonder if it's because I've only got just over half a stone to go? Does everybody use 12 - 15 of their carbs a day on veg and salad?

Riven, it's very early days yet but persevere and you'll see results. I've found that this diet takes a bit of tailoring and for me adding an extra meal mid morning helped. That feeling of 'god not another lump of meat/piece of cheese' feeling does go - honestly!

Are you a veggie? If so that rules sugar free jelly out? But no, I shouldn't think one square's going to do a lot of damage. I found myself putting pasta in my mouth the other night, totally out of habit as I was cooking tea for everyone else.

As for the eggs dilemma, if you find an alternative, let me know!!! Maybe boiled and a nice piece of celery to dip with

mrsboogie · 21/04/2010 19:04

pepper or celery or cucumber dipped in cream cheese or peanut butter is good

I don't rally feel any different in or out of ketosis although if I have had noting but a piece of cheese or meat all day I will get a slight feeling of euphoria.

Hi everyone, sorry not posted on here for a few days. It sounds as if everyone are doing so well. 8lbs in the first week is brilliant. I was losing roughly a stone a month for the first few weeks but that has slowed right down now. Sorry I've not noticed any unusual smells down below!

I think you need to eat fat to kick start the fat burning process - also there are carbs in salad so if you were eating a huge amount of salad you would be getting some carbs there - you are probably not in ketosis yet - it can take a few days.

Most of the weight people lose in the first week or two is water weight caused by eating more proten and less carbs.

If you struggle through for a bit on this diet and remain unhappy you will stop at some point and your body will grab back any fat it has lost.

You need to find something that you can stick to that doesn't make you miserable.

You definitely need to eat more fat. It provides energy and will keep you sustained for longer. It was the one thing that kept me going in the early days and I didn't limit it, especially my blue cheese salad, avocado and mayo!

Once you've started to lose the weight and introduce more carbs you can then reduce the fat content.

mrsboogie · 22/04/2010 14:06

if you are in ketosis you are burning fat! - you must be holding onto water for some reason.

I am trying to be creative thinking of new treats to have, last week I made little swiss roll-type things out of a jar of roasted red peppers with cream cheese in the middle served with rocket YUM!,

tomorrow I am making caulifower and sugar snap curry

Mrsboogie ? your snack ideas are yummy. I am so not creative when it comes to trying new recipes.

Riven ? lol Riven, it will probably all catch up with you in a few days and you will have a big loss.

mrsboogie · 23/04/2010 15:23

I love to cook which is why I got fat in the first place - so I am going to have to come up with creative ideas if I am going to stick it out on a long term basis. Have today made a cauliflower cheese without any flour!

Riven if you are still here - I did a fantastic day yesterday (or so I though)only didn't drink much water - anyway today I am over 3lbs heavier than I was yesterday!! I cannot have put on 3lbs so it must be water. Either that or my scales is fucked...

Its two steps forward one step back , this malarky...

Can I join please?! I'm in day 8 of induction and have lost 10lb... yippee!!! (Most of it water methinks tho') I've been super super strict this time. (Decided enough was enough and if I was going to get on the weightloss wagon again, then I was going to do. it. properly) I've been sticking to the book which I HIGHLY recommend to get and read - just knowing WHY stuffing my face with fat is making me thinner really helps. Canitbedone is spot on - fat satisfies you and keeps you full. I know when I'm in ketosis as I'm just not hungry... which is the side effect of atkins that I think will make the difference to me losing weight. Woo! Having to force myself to eat and keep UP my carbs and veg is a new one for me!

I did stall at day 4 though and went up 3 pounds when I wasn't eating enough. Your body goes into starvation mode if you don't eat enough calories. Eating more and cuting out the atkins bar got me moving down again. Water water water also seems to help. At least that helps my craving for a cup of tea with milk! (Milk V high carbs will re-introduce at a later date.)

The hard bit about low-carb is that if you cheat even a little bit you knock your body out of fat-burning back into carb-burning, and it takes a few days to get back into ketosis. Arse. I'd still LOVE a nibble of chocolate! And a cup of teaaaaaaa (weeps)

Atkins bars are fine as long as you're still losing weight - they can be one of the things thats 'stalls' your weight loss. So - if you're losing weight fine go ahead but if you've plateaued (sic.. thats one of those words I can start but not stop IYSWIM) then try cutting it out.

Morning everyone
well week 2 and I've lost 3lbs this week so now 11lbs in total. Obviously chuffed to bits. Quite nice to now know I'm burning up my rolls of fat rather than just losing water weight.

Mrsboogie - pls pls keep ur lovely food ideas coming. Brilliant and I would never have thought of them.

Off to a wedding today and although obviously still BIG I'm smaller than I used to be and I'm over the moon about it. Food today however is paella so I'm just going to try and be as strong as poss and pick the meat and fish out. Really quite nervous but can't stop my life cos of diet. My hubby also v supportive I know he will help me stay strong today.

Canitbedone - how's ur weigh in today?

Enjoy the sun everyone.

NoobyNoo · 24/04/2010 07:04
