5 stone to lose - Anyhow that works for you - thread 3

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 08/05/2024 09:10

If you have (or had) more than 5 stone to lose and plan on doing so over many months in a reasonably sustainable way and would like to hang out with a supportive crowd this could well be the thread for you.

I took the title of the thread based on the previous threads some of us were on which turned out to be lovely supportive threads. With a mild edit to clarify no I'm not guaranteeing everyone will lose 5 stone in 6 months.

Super happy for anyone who likes the sound of this to join us. Weigh ins have typically been once a week on Monday. I generally prefer working in kilos because the maths is nice but stones are also perfectly fine.

General medical advice for most people is to aim to lose 1 - 2 pounds a week, or somewhere between 0.5 - 1kg. If you've quite a lot to lose a kilo (2.2lb) a week is perfectly healthy and sensible amount to aim for. That is a 1000 kcal deficit a day. = 26kg (4 stone in 6 months). This is clearly a VERY ask if your total daily energy expenditure is 2600 kcal than if it is 1600 kcal. This advice does rise up to 2-3 pounds a week or 1.5kg a week if you have a high BMI, (so e.g. the person below has an estimated total daily energy expenditure of 2591 so could quite sensibly aim to eat 1340 kcal a day) but do get medical advice if you aren't sure what a good target for you is.

Absolutely no pressure on anyone as to how fast you should be aiming to lose weight. I would like the priority always to be getting healthier bodies and healthier habits.

you can calculate your total daily energy expenditure with a site like this one

I'm 50-something. I've yoyo dieted my whole life until now. Average size maybe 12. But I'm small-frame, so size 14 is 'big' and a lot of padding. Anyway, by 2022 I'd got to size 16, the biggest I'd ever been.

I knew the calorie rules, the intermittent fasting, the minimum 20 mins moderate exercise a day. I'd successfully lost 2-3 stone at various times. But I'd then put it back on again.

The difference this time is that in 2022 I stopped eating most ultra-processed food. No shop-bought cake, biscuits, crisps, ready meals, sausages, bacon, etc. I also stopped calorie counting. I was careful enough, didn't eat massive amounts of cheese, say, but I otherwise ate as much as I wanted of whole foods - fruit, veg, artisan bread, fish & chicken not red meat. Potatoes or sweet potatoes, not pasta or rice.

I walked a lot, but I do anyway as I don't have a car or ride a bike.

I lost 3 stone in 18 months, and I'm still on the 'diet', sort of - I'll have rice or pasta occasionally now, the occasional Haagen-Daaz lolly, but treats have to be as wholesome as possible.

My diet has now shifted completely. I just don't buy the crap I used to buy a lot. I would love a chocolate biscuit, but not enough to buy a packet.

That's what I've been doing @RogueFemale . The weight is coming of slowly but by ditching most of the UPF the food cravings are not there anymore. It's more of a change of lifestyle rather than a diet. Well done on your 3 stone loss. 👏
After saying the above I expect I'll gain this week. The family wedding has arrived! I will try my best food wise but we've had to travel 8 hours to get here so sitting all day to get here and when we go back home isn't going to help.

BigDahliaFan · 30/05/2024 07:23

@RogueFemale me too. I was already eating fairly healthily at meal times but I was snacking loads and would have a cooked breakfast on a Saturday and lots of crisps. Lost a stone and a half by basically stopping snacking and eating way more veg and smaller carb portions. Weekend breakfast is now poached eggs with avocado and tomatoes on sourdough.

it’s easy because I don’t feel hungry, I’m not getting sugar dips or salty cravings. Still got a stone and a half to lose. But it’s a good change to have made.

Aye it's a good point well made about 17 weeks away entirely possible for me to drop to a size 16 or 18 by then and be utterly unremarkable (I hope)

Yes, totally agree. It's nothing like how I used to diet, - which was calorie counting and still eating the UPF within that calorie count. And the fact is that 18 months after losing that 3 stone, I haven't regained the weight, as I'm still on the same low-UPF diet, never occurred to me to start bingeing on crisps and cake again. Yes it was quite a slow process to lose the weight, but it was steady and easier than counting, and I didn't and don't feel tempted to go back to eating the crap. 😇

Yes, same experience. Your previous Saturday cooked breakfast reminded me of a friend years back who was doing the high protein low carb diet, had even gone to an expert who'd given her a list of what she was allowed to eat. I remember her frying up bacon and eggs and thinking, well, I just don't think she's going to lose weight eating that - and she didn't. The info about UPF has been a revelation for me. It really works not to eat it!

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 31/05/2024 06:42

No weigh in for a few weeks for me. Forgot my £1 last week and today the gym is closed as a building nearby is on fire. I think it's the same one that's been on fire a few times in recent years. I drove home with the intent to train in the garage but I'm just sat here thinking I can't be bothered 😂

DuckWithOneWing · 31/05/2024 10:09

Yesterday I went to see Jon Bon Jovi, so I had to go through my wardrobe and decide what to wear. I'm so happy that most of my Bon Jovi t shirts fit again! And I've got 2 "new" pairs of trousers.

whatthejuice · 01/06/2024 07:25

Just been catching up with the thread. Welcome to anyone who has joined and well done to everyone else for keeping on!

I'm just back from a week away and I'm in a bit of a state of shock. I was totally prepared to have maintained/had a slight gain but I've lost 4lbs?! Obviously I'm over the moon but am trying to work out how this happened. I can only imagine it's me doing 15k/20k steps a day - we do love to walk on holiday! Maybe I should go on holiday every week!

These are my numbers:

SW: 18 stone 10 lbs
CW: 16 stone 1lb
GW: 12 stone

My next goal is to get in the 15lbs...I would love to see that by next weekend. Another 5lbs to go and I've lost 3 stone too. So that's what I'm focusing on the next few weeks!!!

All the best for a great week ahead!

LemonTurdCart · 01/06/2024 07:55

Well done @whatthejuice what a pleasant surprise.

I am still stuck on 16 stone so maybe I need to book a holiday!

Yesterday went out for lunch and managed to choose sensibly and keep under 1600cal for the day. I have a few more events coming up so it was reassuring

Gabriella83 · 01/06/2024 08:49

Weigh in day for me and as expected it's a gain. 4.25lb! I have no excuses. I ate too much and didn't move enough while we were away at the family wedding.
SW 18st 9.5lb
CW 16st 7.25lb
Back on track today. The way I eat now is the new normal for me not what I've eaten in the last 3 or 4 days. I'm sure my gain will be off by next week and hopefully some extra! I just have a belly full of food and I feel awful. Well done @whatthejuice fantastic that you were away and still managed a big loss. Unlike my abysmal effort. I think I ate out of stress and boredom. Hope everyone is having a good week.

Don't be hard on yourself @GabriellaGabriella83 you've come so far and a few days will not throw you off track! Those few lbs will come off and you can crack on.

Please don’t be too hard on yourself. Hope you had a nice time and lovely food!!

For what it’s worth, please remember that to gain a pound of fat, you have to overeat by 3,500 calories (so 3,500 cals on top of your daily BMR). Do you think you’ve overeaten by about 15,000 on your break? Ok, you may have, but it’s unlikely. For me, wine is the killer at events. Very easy to add 1,000 calls in Malbec on a good night out!

For every 100g of carbs you eat, your body takes in 300g of water so there’s a very good chance that if you were eating a lot of carb-heavy and/or salty food, you’re retaining water and that’s what’s causing the jump on the scales.

A week of low carbs, plenty of water, low salt and you’ll see that 4lbs roll off the scales fairly quickly. I find chai really good for water retention.

Gabriella83 · 01/06/2024 16:14

Thank you@whatthejuice and@BusinessSecretsOfThePharaoh for making me see sense! Very interesting about the carbs/salty food and water retention @BusinessSecretsOfThePharaoh Fortunately I didn't drink alcohol as I was driving. I'm just feeling a bit deflated. I wore a dress to the wedding and I don't usually wear dresses. Although I looked as good as I could have looked it did make me realise I have a long way to go! 3 months to a family christening so this is giving me the motivation I need.

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 03/06/2024 09:35

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 03/06/2024 10:58

Well done on your mini goal!!! @stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk

Happy Monday everyone. Sorry I'm dropping in and out but this thread is so helpful so thank you for letting me be a part of it.

Had another fun weekend. 2 McDonald's breakfasts on Sunday after a bottle of wine on Saturday. DP weighed himself this morning and he's gained 3kg over the weekend but he drank a hell of a lot more. This week will be a serious week. Minimal calories today as no gym. Probably 1000 or so. Holiday is 14th and no matter how much I lose I will still be fat but I need to think about the next holiday and following years.

GameOfJones · 03/06/2024 12:30

Morning all, I'm dropping back onto the thread after a busy half term. I weighed this morning and I've stayed the same, I actually thought I'd have gained as we had a few meals out but no movement on the scales. I really need a kick up the backside though as I'd got down to 14st 1lb before Easter and then gained some lbs that I've not yet shifted.

SW - 15st 1b
CW - 14st 7lbs
First goal - get to the 13s

My focus is on upping my exercise, increasing fruit, veg and pulses and limiting snacking and alcohol.

Today:

B - peach, yoghurt, nuts
L - hummus on sourdough toast and some grapes
D - shakshuka
E - I've done a 20 minute yoga video and 45 minutes of weights

Bumblebeebum23 · 03/06/2024 12:58

Well done, everyone. I've pretty much stayed the same over half term. Fluctuating between 11st 13.5lbs and 12st 0.5lbs. I started my pledge to walk 300,000 steps in June for Young Minds yesterday, so I'm hoping that will give me a bit of a boost x

HippyChickMama · 03/06/2024 22:44

I'm still stuck at the same weight, it doesn't seem to be moving at all, however, I have increased my exercise and feel fitter than I have for a long time. I ran for 20 minutes non stop on Saturday (C25K), swam 700m on Sunday morning and then did a 9 mile hike on Sunday afternoon. I'm running three times a week, every week, and actually enjoying it! I'm going to have a really strict week on plan this week and if I still don't lose anything, I'm going to cut my portion sizes of 'free food' down
SW: 17st 12
CW: 14st 12
Next goal: 14st 7
TW: 10st 7ish

mondaytosunday · 04/06/2024 08:28

Weigh in and 1.6kg (3.5lbs) down since last week. Total in eight weeks is 12.4kg (27.3lbs). Three weeks til holiday.
Definitely feel a difference in my clothes and don't feel so 'huge' but I'm one of those people who don't think they look that bad til they see a photo and then are appalled. I don't think there's a noticeable difference in appearance and I don't think I've dropped a size, just that the clothes in the size I am are more comfortable. Another 16kg and I will be back to my habitual post kids pre pandemic weight, still very obese though! Hopefully I'll hit that some time in September. I reckon I won't get to goal weight til next summer as weight loss slows down.

N27 · 04/06/2024 11:26

Just a quick post to placemark and hopefully join you lovely folk! Weighed in at boots this morning and a massive healthy shop done ready to get on the wagon. Just trying to get da to sleep then I’ll be making a brew and catching up on the thread so far

RainbowZebraWarrior · 04/06/2024 11:40

Also placemarking and saying hello. I've got about 35kg to lose. I started yesterday doing calorie deficit. It worked last year and I dropped a stone in a month, then I went on holiday and lost momentum.

Anyway, starting weight:

105.9kg

Initial goal:

<100kg

Also, I've just bagged up all my big joggers and winter hoodies for charity to go out tomorrow. Either way, I'll be buying new clothes for this winter.

GameOfJones · 04/06/2024 11:45

That's brilliant @HippyChickMama , I don't think I could run for 5 minutes let alone 20!

I've stuck to my plan of getting up a bit earlier to get some yoga in, it does feel better starting off the morning with a good stretch and it seems to be setting me on the right track for the day.

Today:

B - nuts, yoghurt and banana
L - avocado on toast and a latte
D - three egg omelette with garlic mushrooms
E - 15 mins of yoga and 45 mins of weights

HippyChickMama · 04/06/2024 12:25

@GameOfJones I couldn't run for 60 seconds when I started! I struggled today and didn't complete the 8 minute running interval, I think my legs are still recovering from the long hike on Sunday and it was really humid this morning, but I will try again on Thursday

BusinessSecretsOfThePharaoh · 04/06/2024 12:50

Hi all. Well done to all the losers, and welcome to the new joiners!

No loss on the scales for me this week and showing an increase which is disappointing as I’ve maintained a deficit and the maths just isn’t mathing.

I am peeing like a racehorse though, and my period finished a few days ago so I think I’ve been retaining a lot of water. Also had a bit of a carb-heavy weekend (despite staying low calorie) so going to going to keep a stiff upper lip, not let this week throw me off course, and see what the scales says next week.
