5 stone to lose - Anyhow that works for you - thread 3

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 08/05/2024 09:10

If you have (or had) more than 5 stone to lose and plan on doing so over many months in a reasonably sustainable way and would like to hang out with a supportive crowd this could well be the thread for you.

I took the title of the thread based on the previous threads some of us were on which turned out to be lovely supportive threads. With a mild edit to clarify no I'm not guaranteeing everyone will lose 5 stone in 6 months.

Super happy for anyone who likes the sound of this to join us. Weigh ins have typically been once a week on Monday. I generally prefer working in kilos because the maths is nice but stones are also perfectly fine.

General medical advice for most people is to aim to lose 1 - 2 pounds a week, or somewhere between 0.5 - 1kg. If you've quite a lot to lose a kilo (2.2lb) a week is perfectly healthy and sensible amount to aim for. That is a 1000 kcal deficit a day. = 26kg (4 stone in 6 months). This is clearly a VERY ask if your total daily energy expenditure is 2600 kcal than if it is 1600 kcal. This advice does rise up to 2-3 pounds a week or 1.5kg a week if you have a high BMI, (so e.g. the person below has an estimated total daily energy expenditure of 2591 so could quite sensibly aim to eat 1340 kcal a day) but do get medical advice if you aren't sure what a good target for you is.

Absolutely no pressure on anyone as to how fast you should be aiming to lose weight. I would like the priority always to be getting healthier bodies and healthier habits.

you can calculate your total daily energy expenditure with a site like this one

@MsNeis it's completely possible. My sister did this, walked every day - started off short distances, but every day. Just got up and did it first thing so it was out of the way.

Lost about 8 stone over 2 years.

She had a very sweet tooth and loved white carbs. But she started to eAt more protein, nuts, non white carbs and mountains of veg. She said the protein was the thing that cut the sugar cravings but she still ate carbs. She was strict to start with but found it wasn't too bad - now it's more 80/20.

LuluBlakey1 · 05/08/2024 15:32

I have not been on in a while. Since 7/1/2024, I have now clocked up , as of last Monday, a 56lbs or 4 st weight loss.
I get weighed tomorrow and am hopeful of 2lbs more.
I am embarrassed by how easy it has been and ashamed I have taken so long- this time- to get to grips with myself.
I am hopeful of losing another 28lbs by Christmas to reach my target of 10st. Truth is I am like any addict and have to take it a day at a time.

MsNeis · 05/08/2024 16:11

@BigDahliaFan ohh, that's so encouraging, thanks for sharing! 🤗
I really need this!

LemonTurdCart · 05/08/2024 21:07

@MsNeis I am like you I think, an emotional eater and no off switch for carbs.
The thing that has worked for me is gradually cutting out processed foods. I fucking love bread but I can’t overeat homemade wholemeal or rye like I used to abuse a supermarket white sliced loaf.

I’d 90% talked myself into a takeaway tonight, with an awful headache and no will to cook. But managed to talk myself back out of it.

MsNeis · 06/08/2024 07:38

@LemonTurdCart oh, it's hard, isn't it? Takeaway dinners are a theme in my home: we don't have family nearby, so we relied on takeaways when our first born was a baby. I think I made the connection "somebody cooking for us = help" and I must admit that we eat takeaway many times a week. Recently, we decided to be more frugal and takeaways are the first thing to go.

Hello everybody

I haven't been around but I have been thinking of you often and

CW 109.9kg which is basically a 1kg gain (in 3/4 weeks) but I had a holiday and wasn't in a great place mentally so I'm not going to beat myself up.

Hi all!

That's a great loss @LuluBlakey1 well done! No doubt you will get your target easily.

Welcome @MsNeis. That's all you can do, day at a time and small goal at a time, too big a goal is very overwhelming. Good luck!

My week hasn't been great, I have had a persistent cough for nearly 3 weeks now and it's made me very tired as I'm not sleeping through the night, also not feeling in a mood to cook good stuff so I've not been eating a lot.
Now on antibiotics so fingers crossed this ends the cough!

SW: 311
CW: 298.7
Total loss: 12.3lbs
Got a mini goal of 275lb by 29th Nov.

Thanks but I can only work a day at a time. It feels very fragile in my mind. I can't guarantee I can do it tomorrow or the next day so I only focus on today

GameOfJones · 07/08/2024 09:54

Hello all, I'm another 1lb down so finally into the 13s!

SW: 15st 1lb
CW: 13st 13lbs
GW: 11st

Intermittent fasting and cutting down on UPFs seems to be working well for me. I'm nervous as we're going on holiday next week and I'm expecting to gain but I know I can do this.

MsNeis · 07/08/2024 10:54

Thank you @Izzydogmum I will set mini goals too, as I've seen done here!
Take care, I hope you get better soon: meanwhile, be kind to yourself💐

stillplentyofjunkinthetrunk · 07/08/2024 20:59

well done @GameOfJones so exciting when the big number changes

Weigh in day for me today. The first full week has gone well. I've lost 3.5lb. Now back at the weight where it all went downhill before. This time I'm determined to get into the 15s!
SW 18st 9.5lb
CW 16st 3lb
Hope everyone else is having a good week.

whatthejuice · 16/08/2024 08:30

Hi everyone 👋
Back from my holiday now and just catching up with all your messages. Well done everyone for showing up! And especially those getting back on the horse!!
It's been 2 weeks since I last messaged and I was so sure I'd have a gain/maybe best case maintain.
I was really shocked to see I have actually lost 3lbs over these 2 weeks! I think my approach of having a bit of what I fancy as well as sweating buckets in the heat and walking 15000 steps a day is what worked. I'm obviously absolutely over the moon and can't believe I can say I have now lost FOUR STONE 🥳 🎉 This weigh-in definitely lessened the holiday blues for me!
Now I'm looking forward to getting back to my routine at home and enjoying my food choices being a bit easier again.
I guess my next mini goal will be to get under the 200lb mark, which is 7lbs away.
Hope you are all doing well and enjoying the late summer sun ☀️

MsNeis · 16/08/2024 10:08

Hi everyone! I wanted to ask: has anyone of you read "Atomic habits"? I'm just starting to read it (after the persistent insistence of my DH) and I'm finding it very useful! I think it's opened my eyes a lot and I'm hopeful it will change my approach to weight loss. I wanted to know if anyone of you has had a similar experience, or if you have implemented some of his tips and how did it work for you...

Congratulations @whatthejuice 🥳 Wonderful news!

Hurryupharry · 22/08/2024 08:51

Hi, I was on the original version of this thread and maybe this one too ? I have been off piste for a long time and foolishly allowed weight that I lost to creep back on. My weight loss journey was kickstarted last year by the end of a relationship which really hurt … and then someone new came along and I fell into lazy habits. Now I find myself mostly back where I started.
Most recent guy is most likely history but this time I am not particularly sad and am much more in the headspace of focusing on myself and improving the quality of my life all round.
I have been adjusting my diet over the last couple of weeks but so far no real impact. I struggle with the drinking lots of water because I constantly then want to wee, including several times at night, which is clearly not ideal.
I can see that the thread has gone quite quiet but there are some familiar names, just not sure who is still actively trying to lose.
Current weight 106kg
Lowest weight end of last year 96kg - I think

Any drop would be good but would definitely like to get under 100kg

Hurryupharry · 22/08/2024 08:54

*I’m 57. It seems increasingly difficult to lose weight. I gave up my gym membership because I didn’t have time for it but now I think I may have to restart it

BusinessSecretsOfThePharaoh · 24/08/2024 17:10

Hey all. I’m still here but plateauing again. To be fair, I’m overdoing the biscuits and finding it hard to keep away from them.

Current weight loss is 49kg/7st 10lbs.

14kg/2st 3lbs left to go to my goal. I’ll get there. Based on my progress so far, I’ll be able to lose that by the end of December if I could just get myself motivated.

Going on holiday in three weeks and really hoping to a) lose another bit before then, and b) not gain while I’m away.

89redballoons · 24/08/2024 17:31

Hello everyone. I'm joining this thread for the first time, having recently bitten the bullet, bought scales, weighed myself and realised to my horror that I weigh just a shade over fifteen stone.

I'm 5'6, and this is 4 stone more than at my wedding six years ago, which itself was a stone more than when I met my DH nine years before that.

I know exactly how I've gained the weight - I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old, I breastfed both of them until 18 months and definitely got into the habit of eating much more while I was exclusively breastfeeding newborns, and then just never stopped. Blush Also, my DH and I very rarely get an evening out together so all of our "date nights" have consisted of takeaways and wine in front of the telly. Also, I compulsively finish my kids' food if they don't finish their meals and am in the habit of then eating a whole extra meal with DH once they're asleep.

I have PCOS and there is a history of heart disease in my family - my dad was obese and he had a fatal heart attack in his 40s - so this HAS to stop.

I'm planning to cut out white carbs and alcohol, replace with as much fruit and veg as possible, keep a loose-ish eye on calories to try and stick around 1200 a day, and also eat meals properly with the children and not in front of the telly. I will walk to work which is 45 minutes and do Fitnessblender classes which I've done before.

Aiming to lose a stone by my birthday in October and another by Christmas. If it doesn't work I will reassess and perhaps speak to my GP about medication.

Today I have had Greek yogurt with apple and raspberries and crushed walnuts for breakfast, homemade butternut squash and lentil soup for lunch, and having pot roast beef with carrots, peas and cabbage (no potatoes) for dinner shortly. I don't even feel that hungry which leads me to wonder how stuffed I must have been regularly feeling in the last few months and years.

It feels like a mountain to climb, but hopefully posting here might keep me slightly accountable.

Hurryupharry · 25/08/2024 07:39

@BusinessSecretsOfThePharaoh 49kg!!! That’s amazing. You must be feeling incredibly proud to have achieved that. How long has it taken you?
@89redballoons welcome ! I find the first steps and days the most difficult but it sounds like you are on your way and in a positive frame of mind so that’s a great start. Seeing the numbers drop on the scales helps me. Knowing that what I am doing is having an impact.
I had a really good day yesterday. Considering it was a Saturday when I am much more likely to have a drink or treat myself because ‘it’s the weekend’ I was very restrained. I had toast in the late morning and an egg and cheese salad around 5pm. My usual challenge is the urge to snack in the evening. I have realised that I can fast quite well because I know I will be able to eat at some point but once I have had my last meal of the day I feel the restrictions of the diet very strongly. The one difference yesterday was I had 2 cups of green tea. I am going to see if it has an impact on my appetite or whether yesterday was a coincidence.
Probably mostly on the back of eating less I am a lb down this morning.
Have a fabulous Sunday everyone 💪🏻😎

BusinessSecretsOfThePharaoh · 25/08/2024 10:33

@Hurryupharry, I’m heading towards the 13 month mark. I started Ozempic and an aggressive calorie-controlled diet at the beginning of August 2023.

Let me know how the green tea works for you. I’m the same with evening snacking- a nice cup of Earl Grey in the evening with an ever-increasingly supply of snacks is proving to be my downfall.

89redballoons · 25/08/2024 14:32

@Hurryupharry thanks Smile your day sounds great. I like the sound of the green tea.

I'm not actually in a particularly good place across my life - various friendships and relationships in flux, plus my eldest about to start school with possible SEN - however I am feeling relatively confident about the weight loss, and like I have a plan. The good thing is that I actually really love eating fresh vegetables, and cooking from scratch. I've got so much going on right now I can't do it all anyway, so may as well just focus on something I can do and can control.

Today's breakfast was the same as yesterday and dinner will be the same as yesterday too. For lunch, we had a spread of mezze-ish type things, with me, DH and both kids all sitting properly round the table. It was great! I had lots of salad leaves, a dollop of hummus, two falafels and about a tablespoon of couscous. The rest of my family had pitta bread, sun dried tomatoes and halloumi as well. The kids tried a bit of almost everything which is quite surprising as they can be picky as hell.

Hopefully, having meals all together with lots of salad/sandwich bits on the table for everyone to help themselves to will mean that both I and the kids eat better for ourselves.

loriat · 27/08/2024 06:57

I'm still going, fairly slow progress at the moment, but downwards overall. I seem to have settled into a pattern of couple of weeks where I lose nothing, then a week where I drop 2 or 3 pounds, so still basically works out at around a pound a week. Overall weight loss is now 5 and a half stones and I have finally moved from an obese BMI into overweight.

When I started this last year I didn't really have a goal in mind, other than to get fitter. This has changed as I've progressed, now I hope to reach a normal BMI by the time of my big birthday at the end of next year. So that's another 2 stone to go and over a year to do it in, which doesn't seem too much to aim for.

TheStroppyFeminist · 27/08/2024 15:49

Hello everyone, please can I join you? My weight and not having done anything about it for so long literally kept me awake last night. I feel so sort of foolish and embarrassed to have done this to myself, if anyone recognises that feeling?

Anyway, so from today and tomorrow I have a plan, which is this:

I'm going to do the Blood Sugar Diet for about 8 weeks ish
Because I need a quick result to start with
I have written myself a long letter today about why I want to lose weight
Also what I'm looking forward to about it once I've lost the weight
How I'm going to do it, including "posting on a good mumsnet thread"

My downfall is bread, butter, chicken skin, roast potatoes, cheese, toast and wine. I don't particularly have a sweet tooth so I reckon I can cut sugar fairly easily. Aggggh, it SHOULD be doable but somehow I've just not done it and have accidentally been fucking fat for about 20 years. It's ridiculous! But now it stops. I will miss wine, I love wine, but I really want to be thinner, so it has to go, mostly. I am going to build in the odd cheat day though.

Hurryupharry · 27/08/2024 17:16

@TheStroppyFeminist sometimes these thoughts just crystallise don’t they ?! As you say hopefully a hard and fast start will give you the impetus to keep going. Seeing the numbers drop is a great motivator I find. Good luck 🤞🏼
I had a mixed long weekend. Mentally fairly positive and not feeling too distracted ( I find I have to concentrate on weight loss. If I have too much going on I just don’t prioritise it enough) but social events meant that I ate and drank too many calories to lose anything so now trying to push on to the next weigh in on Saturday morning.
