January 2024! Fresh start & develop new habits. Join-in to reset & refresh and become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

Happy new year everyone! 🎉☺️ I'm also moving over from the Christmas thread.

I weighed yesterday at 50.5 so a gain of 0.8kg since 20th December - not surprised really! Not sure if I'll weigh today as I've already drunk a fair bit and eaten breakfast too. Will try and reign it in over the next couple of days and brave January's first WOW. Hoping a lot/some of that will be water weight 🤞

Not entirely sure yet what my plan of action is. Definitely get back on the bandwagon re. drinking more water which I am currently being rubbish at! Aiming for 3l a day as still bf. Trying to get back on with calorie counting today (using nutracheck) and slowly transition back to intuitive eating as I reach my goal. Think my new goal is to lose 3-3.5kg and also to generally try and feel much more body neutral and definitely to give up entirely saying bad things about myself! I spend a lot of time thinking about how much I don't like how I look (a lot of that isn't to do with weight but other things) and I don't want DC to grow up hearing me criticising my looks, which is a real habit atm! I'd also like to start strength training and exercising again. Have had chronic pain issues and injuries which have got in the way but, again, hoping to ease back into exercise and start daily yoga (think I'm going to set myself a target of 5 mins a day stretching). Definitely need to stretch! Really need to meditate even if it's just 5 mins a day to get rid of some anxiety and quieten my mind. Does anyone have any tips for finding time to do these sorts of things around young children?

Looking forward to trying to take much better care of myself and trying to be kinder to myself in 2024 and hopefully feeling much better mentally and physically for it too! I have a daily affirmations/kind words calendar which I've started today. If anyone is interested Jan 1st is "You deserve lots of beauty in your life."

Thanks @TheRealHousewife for the action for happiness calendar. I will try and keep an eye on that and follow along - seems a lovely thing to do 😊

Good luck everyone with whatever you're hoping to achieve in the new year and wishing you a fantastic 2024!

TheRealHousewife · 01/01/2024 09:36

Hi @Newbornmum I totally agree about trying to get out of the habit of negative self talk. Acceptance and change in the same sentence is a bit of an oxymoron but I feel that’s what we need to embrace. 👍👍👍

Id anyone thinking of using joining something like slimming world? I feel like I may be more motivated if I have to go and weigh in every week? I was thinking this alongside, calorie counting, exercise and complete overhaul of my diet xx

maybein2022 · 01/01/2024 10:08

Morning all, I have weighed in, opened up my online tracker and ready to go. I have put on 6.5lb over the last two weeks or so, surprised it’s not more really. Still means I lost 2st 6lb last year which is better than nothing. (And 4lb at the end of 2022 when I started again following having a baby).

I’d really like to lose more this year, I’m not going to put any big targets on as I tend to lose focus if I do that, but ideally if I could end 2024 having lost a few stone I would be very happy.

Good luck to all.

Meals today I’m not sure yet (WW) the only one I know is homemade fish stew for dinner.

Dinkydoo17 · 01/01/2024 10:15

I'm in. Ive had a very tough 6 months. I lost weight with stress but then comfort ate my way back up which isn't like me. I'm a runner but currently injured so can't run, which is doing my head in! So, after today I'm going no alcohol. I'll see how long for. I did a whole year a couple of years back. I have 8lbs to lose. I'll do Wednesday weigh ins. Thank you for this group 💪🏻x

CumbrianExile · 01/01/2024 10:38

Morning all. Happy New Year. Checking in with my first weigh in/starting weight which is 15st 8lb. Not as bad as it was when I weighed in last week! Despite continuing to eat the christmas food!

I want to lose at least 3 stone, probably more like 4. Trying to do small targets though otherwise it all seems a bit overwhelming. First target its to get into the 14's so 9lb.

Might struggle a bit today as I am feeling a little hungover. But I have plans for a walk this afternoon with the kids, and meals are all planned. Need to throw out/hide the christmas left overs Xmas Grin

DomesticatedPickle · 01/01/2024 10:48

Happy New Year everyone.

I’m a new to these threads but could do with the support and accountability of this type of thing.

I have quite a lot to lose and will be doing IF and upping my exercise to help. Starting a Caroline Girven series today and hoping it’ll kick start a bit of an exercise hyper focus for me!

I will do WOW but my starting weight today is 94.3kg. I have been heavier but I want to start a real determined effort to get a lot healthier by my birthday in October.

Good luck everyone

LegoTherapy · 01/01/2024 10:49

Morning all and Happy New Year! Checking in with my new name and a weight of 56.25kg. I've gained 2.4lb since Christmas Day which is ok considering the lack of school run since the 21st, being ill, and not having much fibre. It will soon shift.

My porridge and chia is prepping whilst I drink tea. There's Greek yogurt and compote for lunch and we are having a good walk today along the canal and up to my mum's. Soup for dinner I think.

Let's keep this year a healthier eating one. Back to no eating after 6pm and lots of walking. I might finally get round to using my weights too and bouncing on my gym ball.

Lots of new names-welcome! Thanks to these threads I've lost over 2 stone and am not far off maintenance now.

teacher28 · 01/01/2024 10:58

I'm in ........ getting old and achy! I need to lose it to stay healthy and give my knees a break! Three stone to lose. I have joined NutraCheck. I'd love some advice if anyone has any tips on using it effectively.

ThisIsntThe80sPat · 01/01/2024 11:08

Morning everyone, I have a quick question for those who calorie count.
Is nutracheck better than myfitnesspal? I've used mfp for years but have seen people talk positively about nutracheck.

I've weighed in this morning, 4lbs heavier than December 19th😬 and with a starting weight of 99.7kg.
I have tracked this morning so far. Weetabix, almond milk with some protein powder for breakfast. Mince, cabbage and potatoes for lunch, likely vegetable soup for dinner. And there's greek yoghurt and fruit, as well as vegetables sticks for snacks today.
I still have Christmas chocolate leftover but not going to let that stop me starting today. I don't give anything up, just finding a better balance and restricting. So chocolate is still allowed but in smaller quantities.

Lazysundayafternoon2024 · 01/01/2024 11:10

Hi everyone, room for one more on this thread?

I managed to put on 7lbs over Christmas 😆It's not ideal, obviously, so I'm looking to shed up to 2 stones this year, although this goal might be a little ambitious but hey, aim high right?

I'm already in a good fitness routine, I box twice a week but im hoping to go on a run each week as well. I'm giving up alcohol (actually can't wait to do this), I'll fast twice a week and stick to 1200 calories on other days using using MFP.

Joining this thread for accountability really and to cheer you lot on as well! I'm hoping to post once a day to keep myself on track.

SW: 11st 12lb
CW: 11st 12lbs
GW: 10 st

Patchworksack · 01/01/2024 11:26

Happy New Year everyone! I weighed in this morning at 64.5kg and my goal is 58kg and body fat <30. I am doing dry January to reset my relationship with the evening glass of wine and slob in front of the telly which usually also involves unhealthy snacks. Meals are fairly healthy and I run a couple of times a week and do a weights/boxing class, but peri has not been kind to my midriff.
Started off well today, slap on an oestrogen patch and stagger around the NYD parkrun. I’m turning 50 later this year would like to be 50 and fabulous darling rather than 50, fat and frumpy!

WeirdPookah · 01/01/2024 13:52

@TheRealHousewife thank you. It's just disheartening to have weighed in today, effectively setting myself back to my weight in May.

B: Greek 5% yogurt and fruit
L: Quinoa and bulgerwheat mix, shroomdog chorizo, onions, celery, tomato
D: Red cabbage, mashed swede and carrot, vegan meatballs

Been for a decent walk, VERY windy, saw a full rainbow across the sea!
A sign to spur me on!

Stripyunicorn · 01/01/2024 17:42

Finally managed to read all the posts ready to start! Good luck everyone.

i think for me, the key is small changes that are sustainable rather than jumping in trying to change everything. Naturally I tend to eat in a IF style (not a fan of breakfast), so going to stick to that more religiously once I'm back at work.
I'm still going to eat my Christmas leftovers etc, just slowly rather than stuffing my face!

I'll weigh on Wednesday, but I think I'm about 13 stone. Initial goal is 11.5 stone, eventual goal 10.5 stone I think.

Today I had a slice of toast with butter this morning, skipped lunch as we were out but pinched a couple of chips from the kids. Now having chicken Kyiv with a couple of chips and pile of veg with a small slice of uncut bread and butter. I had a few slices of chorizo while cooking too. Drinks wise, few cups of tea and a hot chocolate, having water now. Won't eat for the evening after this, and will stick to water or herbal tea.

I'm going to start ywa January tonight too.

LegoTherapy · 01/01/2024 17:51

@WeirdPookah what a beautiful sight! Welcome back and don't beat yourself up, it'll go again quickly. I always enjoy reading your menu and wish I was someone who tried new foods but can't seem to do it. Silly I know.

I had broccoli and cheddar soup for dinner. Not my favourite but filling. Went for a nice walk along the canal and through lots of mud today. Was nice to get out and have fresh air and sunshine. The sunshine didn't last but it was nice to see it for a change after all this wind and rain. Worst Christmas weather in my living memory.

Earlier night tonight ready for school starting in a few days. Not looking forward to getting up at 6.30am again 😩

EndlessGuineaPigCycle · 01/01/2024 18:22

Happy New Year everyone. I'd like to join please, I have about 2 stone to lose, definitely 1.5 stone to get back to where I was 18 months ago. I used to go to a local weight loss group similar to Slimming World and that worked well for me so I plan on following the same principles. I found it good not having to track every calorie, the main guidelines were sticking to 2 portions of carbs per day, 2 x 100 calorie snacks, 2 portions of dairy, 2 portions of fruit. A lot of it was about focusing on your motivation for losing weight, and usual stuff around drinking enough water, planning meals, exercise etc. I've also had some success with intermittent fasting so may try incorporating 16:18 fasting too. One of my issues is that I've been in chronic pain since January last year due to sciatica, which makes it hard to keep active. But it's important for me to exercise to help with this too so this gives me another motivation.

Rocksonabeach · 01/01/2024 18:33

I’m on. I’m weighing on every 4 weeks with the nutritionist at my local GP surgery.

10 years ago, I was a perfect weight. But a horrendous divorce later, two diagnosed SEN children and a difficult ex, being put on steroids etc I’m now 5 stone overweight.

My target in 2024 is to lose 3 stone having spoken to the nutritionist at the surgery this a reasonable target for the year. I do have a heart condition and various meds.

Also diet wise we aren’t doing a diet but healthy eating.

Im starting at 13 1/2 stone but I’m tiny and wide.

Today I walked 5,000 steps in the pouring rain over a hilly coastal path. I thought it would kill me, it didn’t!

I’ve brought a mini stepper but my giddy aunt it’s hard work on the knees. So umm….. don’t know what to do, I might have to aim for a 100 a day and build up to a thousand. I feel a bit disheartened by that I thought I’d be able to do a thousand but it’s really hard on my knees. So do you think start with a hundred instead? Or is that pointless?

WeirdPookah · 01/01/2024 19:18

@LegoTherapy that's really nice, thank you. I'm looking forward now to eating some lighter meals, more vegetables, after the excess of Christmas.

( and I got three Lego sets for Christmas!)

I'm glad lots of us managed to get outside today, I was going stir-crazy!

@Rocksonabeach no exercise is pointless. All exercise can build your strength and fitness and lead to more!

ImALittlePea · 01/01/2024 20:39

Hello! Happy new year! Finally forcing my head back above water after a couple of weeks hiding away.

Lovely to see such a busy and motivated thread! Hi to newbies and regular posters 👋 and huge thanks to our wonderful OP @TheRealHousewife for keeping us all going!

My scales are still currently in retirement, I can't face them just yet after the last couple of weeks of having absolutely zero resolve. I will probably weigh on Friday. We shall see 😬🤦‍♀️🤞

It's been two years since I first joined these threads, and while I know the last few months have been a slow and steady spiral in the wrong direction for me, I'm back on board. Aside from not having total clarity on the numbers, I'm ready to become an accountable little pea again. So, for what it's worth, my intentions are as follows...

> Get weight back down to 9st 7lb (achieved just before summer '23) and then maintain the hell out of that. It'll be at least half a stone to lose, I think
> Interim target of 9st 10lb by my birthday (April)
> Track calories again (I normally use MFP but a few posters have mentioned nutricheck - is this a better app/tool?)
> 16:8 IF most days (although not feasible every day due to work)
> No more snacking on extra chips/other food on the pass at work!
> Back to no bread, crisps or alcohol during the week (although that starts in force after our delayed staff party this week 🤦‍♀️), and on top of that I'm going to really try and not have the casual wines on the sofa on a Friday/Saturday just because it's the weekend - save it for social occasions
> Post regularly again for accountability and mutual support
> Dance fit twice a week but working out how to add some weight or other training in too
> Water, water, all the water
> Meal plan and stick to it!
> DH and I have also mutually committed to no takeaways for January - at least

Bring it on 💪❤️

PatienceOfEngels · 01/01/2024 20:48

@Newbornmum I find meditating in the morning impossible - my kids have ears on elastic so they usually get out of bed as soon as they hear me! I always found meditating in the evening better as I could do it once the kids were in bed or my husband was home. I also found starting with short mindfulness activities helpful (taking 3 deep breaths is usually manageable! or box breathing for 2 minutes). Sometimes I'll do a s short 2 min your use meditation in the car before I head into work. When my kids were younger we'd sometimes find a good cosmic kids yoga/meditation exercise and now (kids 12 and 9) I've just started doing some breathing exercises with my youngest at bedtime on the Calm app.

That's a lovely affirmation as well. My mantra is "I deserve to feel good"!

@FootballFanGirl I don't like the SW model because I feel like as soon as you stop you gain. I also don't like the messaging around sins or how they rate food so you can eat UPF for fewer sins than things like butter or full fat greek yoghurt. I'd rather eat whole foods and minimally processed foods (in moderation when it's something like cheese, greek yoghurt, olive oil or butter) and avoid UPF altogether. I do think SW can be good for kick starting weight loss but in the long term I don't think it's necessarily helpful.

@Rocksonabeach start small! Don't overdo it, listen to your body and it will get easier. The small changes will build up and make a difference. And solidarity - we are a ND household and it can make life very tough, especially taking care of yourself.

Today:

-boiled egg and rye toast with butter
-seasonal raisin doughnut ball with icing sugar (traditional to eat her on NYE/NYD) with coffee
-vegetarian scotch broth
-salmon with fried potatoes and broccoli followed by butterscotch pudding with custard

9,000 steps today - 2 walks, 1 in the woods and 1 to the playground.

DaisySnowdrop · 01/01/2024 20:54

Hi all, officially started today but will weigh in on Wednesday for an official start weight. Today I’ve done 6500 steps which may seem like nothing to some but I work completely from home and live in a small flat so I don’t do a lot of steps- it averages to around 250 a day! So this is a huge deal for me and takes a bit of effort.

I’m hoping to do 6500 a day for all of January and then do more as I lose more weight☺️

I think posting here daily will help. I’m finished on 1276 calories today (nutracheck).

DaisySnowdrop · 01/01/2024 21:12

ThisIsntThe80sPat · 01/01/2024 11:08

@TheRealHousewife Yes definitely nutracheck. You do have to pay for it- it’s 26.99 a year or I think around 7.00 a month. I went for yearly. I prefer it to Myfitnesspal as it has a completely UK database and has almost everything from UK takeaways to even obscure Lidl Christmas food! for example I nutrachecked Lidl chocolate reindeer on it and it’s there! 😂

The measurements are also in grams and it’s easy to use compared to American measurements such as cups on MFP

Also it gives you the correct calories to lose for your weight and height and adjusts your calories for you as you lose- until you want to maintain. It also weighs in stone and pounds.

I don’t use the forums on there admittedly but they look supportive. I don’t think 2.25 (if you pay for a year) a month for it is bad compared to 19.99 for WW and slimming world. I really love it!

LemonDrizzle23 · 01/01/2024 21:15

Very little movement for me today 😬 as visiting family in the pouring rain for New Year's Day.

Meal 1 - Turkey roast dinner
Meal 2 - chicken rice bowl and some after eights

DS goes back to school in a few days, so hoping to pick up the activity levels at that point!

sprinklersplashes · 01/01/2024 21:24

Hi all!

Jumping on with you all if that's alright!

SW - 13.5
CW - 9.3
GW - 7.10

Lost all the weight in 3 months and have spent the past 6 months maintaining while building a better relationship with food. I lost it through starving myself due to grief and stress so do not follow my lead! I think I'm ready to get to where I want to be in a healthy sustainable way.

I'm coeliac so if anyone has any fab gf meal ideas send them my way

TheABC · 01/01/2024 21:55

Hi all!

My plan for January:

-some form of fitness every day. I usually aim for 12k in steps through running, strength and ju-jitsu.
14:10 IF as I know from experience this is easier for me to maintain

  • meal planning to avoid snacking as that's my downfall
  • no alcohol (snack central)
  • water bottle on my work desk.

I'm not aiming for the scales but for waist inches: there's 4 to come off. Also, if snyone has GL recipes to share, bring it on! My favourites include:

  • Banana pancakes (1 banana, 3 tbsp GL oats, 1 egg) - mash together, fry in spoonfuls and eat with natural yogurt and other toppings.
  • Rice noodles in miso soup with anything in the fridge. Mushrooms, prawns, leftover chicken, sweetcorn, sweet pepper, etc. I use the miso soup sachets. You can pile everything into a jar and dd water at lunchtime or bung it all in a flask and let it steep.
  • Lettuce leaves instead of bread with your favorite filling. The trick is merely drizzle the mayonnaise, rather than smoosh it on. 😛

Hope this helps.
