January 2024! Fresh start & develop new habits. Join-in to reset & refresh and become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

Hey all,

I'm tentatively creeping back in to chat.

I'm an old thread hand. Lost 2 stones here around 2.5 years ago after becoming peri-menopausal
& was really happy. It's crept back on & on over the past 1.5 years. I'm so unhappy- nothing fits & i look in the mirror & don't recognise myself.

I'm 52, newly on HRT & genuinely feel like I don't eat that much- absolutely confirmed by DH (he never puts on weight). I'm pescatarian & struggle to stay off the carbs, but I must.

Plan:
IF (11am-6pm only)
2 main meals & an 11am high protein snack.
Cut most carbs.
As little sugar as I can.
Use MFP to chart calories.
Get back to fitness - swimming/ walking
Really want to start weights- I've heard the right programme can be great for weight loss & strength at my age- any advice gratefully received.

I haven't much time (2 DC, youngest is 12 & has significant ASN so takes up lots of time).

I weighed this morning & cried. But I need to do this, I must.

SW 13st 7lbs
GW 11st
5ft 5.5

I need you guys & hand holding.

Morning everyone, I have a quick question for those who calorie count.
Is nutracheck better than myfitnesspal? I've used mfp for years but have seen people talk positively about nutracheck.

I've weighed in this morning, 4lbs heavier than December 19th😬 and with a starting weight of 99.7kg.
I have tracked this morning so far. Weetabix, almond milk with some protein powder for breakfast. Mince, cabbage and potatoes for lunch, likely vegetable soup for dinner. And there's greek yoghurt and fruit, as well as vegetables sticks for snacks today.
I still have Christmas chocolate leftover but not going to let that stop me starting today. I don't give anything up, just finding a better balance and restricting. So chocolate is still allowed but in smaller quantities.

Edited

I much prefer nutracheck. I find it more accurate and easier to store regular meals and recipes. It's got a better range of uk products too.

No calorie counting for me until Wednesday, but I did start the year with a walk. Only 5k, but up a decent sized hill so good to get some exercise in anc close my Apple Watch rings!

LegoTherapy · 01/01/2024 22:50

Lovely to see some old faces (well, you know what I mean) and I'm glad to see new ones too.
I've got the last of the knock off baileys tonight. A large potion!

I'm hoping for a drop on the scales tomorrow now that I've massively limited the salt and have erm, resumed normal bathroom habits 😬 different food messes up my system. Saying that I'm taking ds to McDonald's on Wednesday because we are off to the panto and it's just him and me. There'll be enough salt in that for a couple of weeks! I'll work off the calories on Thursday up and down those hills but I can't say I care much anyway. All about balance that's my approach. McDonald's on Wednesday, porridge, Greek yogurt and soup on Thursday plus 10 miles up hill and down dale 😃 Thursday is far more typical of my lifestyle though.

2024fit · 02/01/2024 00:08

Great to read about everyone’s plans and tips for weight loss/ developing healthy habits.

Weighing in today at 70.5KG (11-ish stone) and 33 inch waist. Similar weight as before Christmas but it seems I’ve put on half an inch on my waist.

I know it’s not for everyone but I weigh myself very regularly so I don’t get down or too excited about a couple of pounds difference in weight since I know daily fluctuations are normal and not necessarily related to fat loss or gain. Been hovering around 70-72 KG since the middle of last year . I really want to see significant change in the right direction over the next few months and get down into the 60s!

good luck everyone!

Rocksonabeach · 02/01/2024 09:14

My legs ache this morning but I’m aiming to get out and do something later this morning. I feel too old for this ….. but that’s the negative trying to stop me and saying for tea and cake instead as it’s raining and holiday!

wholemeal toast and tea this morning and then shopping to get fruit and veg!

have a nice day everyone

buzzofthebumblebee · 02/01/2024 09:51

(Re) Joining this thread as I just got a fright on the scales - I have regained my stone lost last year - and welcome the support and accountability of you lovely lot to help me shift it again. To be fair much of it feels to be in my boobs which have just ballooned out of proportion. A direct result of all the xmas chocs & sweet stuff I'm sure.

My goal is to get back to where I was last summer - happy and confident in my body (and mind come to that). Wearing clothes that I felt good in. Not so sweaty in the heat. 11 stone will do me fine.

Plan is to eat sensibly, quit sugar/refined carbs, cut snacking and portions, and limit alcohol. Starting by Dry Jan which will help kick-start efforts

I exercise quite a lot so can't restrict calories too much. I can feel the pressure of the extra weight on my knees especially when I run. Age (51) doesn't help tho.

I'll report in with WOW tomorrow. In the meantime, hello to new and old. Wave to Puff

WeirdPookah · 02/01/2024 10:07

I use MyNetDiary to track food and exercise.

It has loads of UK foods as well, I can find most things, and pretty quickly when things are new as well, like the vegan new products in Aldi in January etc.

Ok, we got ready for a walk and then got outside and it's just miserable and wet, so ended up going in the car to get a big box of catfood. Watch Beastie now not like it! Got a couple of new vegan things to try from Aldi as well, but that means I haven't done any exercise.

Children don't go back until next Tuesday, going to my parents tomorrow, need to clean Thursday, people over Friday. Not going to find much time with the children around as well.

So perhaps going to focus on what I can control and do my food right. They are eating a left over stroopwaffel with raisins, I just have coffee!

B: Black bean burrito
L: homemade vegetable and bean soup, couple of crackers
D: cauliflower/potato mash, mushy peas, peas, fish fingers.

Newbornmum · 02/01/2024 10:07

Hi everyone, not the best day yesterday and scales still going in the wrong direction! 😳 DH back at work today though so will be back in routine and hoping that increasing my water intake and eating less crazy amounts of Christmas food (and not much else!) will mean the water weight at least drops off speedily! Feeling a bit down about it but know what I need to do and don't think it'll take very long to get back on track. A better start to today already with lots of water. Definitely glad there's this group to keep track of things and keep the motivation going!

RunningKatie · 02/01/2024 10:11

Been for PT this morning, going swimming with the dc this afternoon so feeling positive about exercise.
We still have festive food and snacks in the house, so everyone is involved and eating them up. I'm trying to ensure I eat mindfully again, sitting at the table and slowing down.
Breakfast: porridge
Lunch: miso soup, fruit, leftover pasta salad
Dinner: quorn escalopes, rice, spinach and remainder of Christmas pud.

LegoTherapy · 02/01/2024 10:57

Back in the 55s this morning with 55.9kg 😃 I'd love a walk on a beach but the weather and the 3 trains to get there mean that's a no. I have been so tired over the Christmas holiday sleeping 10 hours and still struggling to get up. It's not helping that I have a virus and don't feel great. Ds is all mucousy this morning too.
Oats and chia are soaking ready for my porridge. I need to go to the shops and buy milk and bits and bobs to make more soup. Butternut squash and carrot, and probably lentil, carrot and celery. I should try some different soups this year. I'd love to eat more tofu and noodle dishes. I've told ds that we will definitely get my favourite Cambodian meal as a take away soon so he can try it. I've never managed to recreate restaurant tofu. I might go to China town and pick up some of the prepackaged stuff although it's probably not healthy that way. I used to cook a dish with tofu, rice noodles and carrots, red pepper, oak choi and maybe bean sprouts. Quite expensive compared to soup and of course I'm the only one who would eat it 🙄 I hate mealtimes because they are always stressful trying to figure out what everyone will deign to eat.

Flowerchild547 · 02/01/2024 11:02

I’m staying on track so far (1 day in haha).
I think making sure I log everything I eat will be the best thing to do and hopefully make me think before I eat!
Went for a short walk yesterday and will be doing the same today. I wish I could do longer but the weather is so miserable.
Here’s to a good day everyone!

ImALittlePea · 02/01/2024 11:10

Waves to puff and buzz, glad to see you both back ❤️ (and everyone else too, of course) don't beat yourselves up, I've also been well off the wagon and need the drive to get me back to it. Hand holds and support for all!

I've spent the morning deep-cleaning DS's room. We're now off to Tesco for lunch/shop and then to a gaming centre for him.

Plan:
Lunch - hopefully soup if the have it at the cafe, if not will go for the healthiest choice I can without bread. Update pending...
Dinner - making a chilli tonight which we'll have with rice. I'll have some cheese, but will swerve the garlic bread and sour cream.

About to drain another glass of water - here's a prompt to everyone to do the same! Peeing sooooo much today 🤣

ImALittlePea · 02/01/2024 12:34

Lunch update - the only soup was cream of tomato which I don't like, so I had 'posh beans on toast' which came with a poached egg. 430 calories altogether, and it'll definitely keep me off the snacks until dinner now.

Rocksonabeach · 02/01/2024 12:41

I had a nice cup of tea and whole meal toast with marmite and have cleared and cleaned out the fridge 😂and composted or given away lots of left over Christmas stuff. Going shopping on a bit and going to fill with fruit and veg etc - feeling a bit more positive now!

witnessprotection73 · 02/01/2024 12:56

Happy New Year all!

I’ve gone off the rails for pretty much 2 weeks but today I’m back on it. Feel Sluggish due to carb and sugar overload! Looking forward to ‘clean’ eating and also a dry Jan ( well until our holiday on the 26th).

meal 1
fritata ( no potatoes)
salad

meal 2
we have a Green chef box but I can’t remember what I ordered! Hopefully something non meat based.

xx

maybein2022 · 02/01/2024 13:35

Hi all.

Sounds like lots of good starts for everyone! I had a great first day yesterday, only thing lacking was the exercise as it is so miserable here- will be the same today but my first priority is to crack the food.

The headache from no sugar and less caffeine is real! Drinking plenty of water to try and shift it.

I’m doing Weight Watchers combined with the see how you eat app, and also aiming for no sugar January and cutting out diet drinks or at least really cutting down. Hoping this gives me a real kick start. I’ve also decided that there is literally no point (!) wasting points on rubbish- as a family we have made a real effort to cut down on UPF and I do feel so, so much better with that. So a lot more nutrient dense foods and things I actually enjoy eating. It does require planning and careful thinking though.

Lazysundayafternoon2024 · 02/01/2024 14:28

Sounds like everyone is doing very well so far, well done!

I woke up feeling really hungover (despite not drinking yesterday!) so didn't get out of bed until 10am and skipped lunch as I wasn't feeling it, so I've turned today into a fast day. Managed to lose 1lb overnight which is good. Also swapped MFP for Nutracheck and I'm pleasantly surprised with Nutracheck so glad made the switch. Its very easy to use and even gives you little photos of the items you're logging so that you can be sure you're logging the right item.

D: Paprika cod on cauliflower mash, with mini roast potatoes, creamed spinach and roasted tomatoes. Maybe Greek yogurt and raspberries if I get peckish later.

Early start for me tomorrow as I have a fitness class at 6am and then first day back at work.

SW: 11st 12lb
CW: 11st 11lb
GW: 10 st
Total loss: 1lb. Woo hoo!

Good Afternoon All

These threads started in 2017 (might have been an earlier version in 2016) and are now in their 7th year. A big thank you to everyone who contributes as without you all there would be no threads❤️

@FootballFanGirl Ive never attended a paid weight loss plan group. Some people say they benefit from them. Someone I know has been a paid member of slimming world for around 14 years < (totally depends on the participant but I’d say they don’t work for everyone).

@maybein2022 Overall you’ve lost significant weight, well done 👍 Clearly you know what works for you!

Welcome to the group @Dinkydoo17 @DomesticatedPickle @Lazysundayafternoon2024 @EndlessGuineaPigCycle @sprinklersplashes @

@CumbrianExile Do yourself a massive favour and get ahead. Either give away or bin the food. Don’t put yourself under pressure to eat the sugary UPFs only have to lose the any gain 👍

@LegoTherapy Not a bad gain considering all the temptations that have surrounded you 👍and well done getting back into the 55s! 🥳

@ThisIsntThe80sPat @teacher28 Ive not used Nutri-Check myself (I’m a MFP girl which I love) but if it’s similar to other weight management apps I’d say consistency is key even if you’ve gone off plan. Log EVERYTHING. That way you know how gain has occurred etc.

@Patchworksack You are already fabulous!

@WeirdPookah It’s all fine, really it is. You’ll soon be back in control and losing again. Be kind to yourself ❤️

@Stripyunicorn Small manageable steps that are achievable in the short term will aid motivation and spur you on to keep going. Consistency is key.

@Rocksonabeach Sounds very sensible and like myself I say I’m never dieting I’m choosing to eat a healthy and varied diet where nothing is banned. Works for me ☺️ Sorry I’ve no advice about your stepper … could you ask a trainer at your local gym? I’d say if it’s causing joint pain don’t do it.

@ImALittlePea Thank you and what a lovely post you wrote. It’s posts like yours that inspire and motivate our other members. Thank you for sharing ❤️

@DaisySnowdrop Post as often or a little as you like. Do what suits you 😬

@TheABC welcome to the thread 👍

A warm welcome back @Puffalicious … is it really over 2 years since you last posted?

Hi @buzzofthebumblebee I’m sure you were one of our members on previous threads. Welcome back.

Menu
Meal 1 - Minestrone Soup. Pecans.

Hello.
i haven’t really started on my diet (5:2) yet as I’m feeling drained. Cancelled my Pilates class and have spent most of the day on the sofa. Not sure if it is a bug or the effects of DJ. Probably a bit of both. I have booked some more exercise classes for next week and compiled a list of meals to make on my fasting days, so not all negatives. 1st 5:2 day tomorrow.
lost a 1lb since yesterday. I’ll put that down to the lack of wine 🙄

CumbrianExile · 02/01/2024 15:37

You're right @TheRealHousewife, most of it is gone now anyway, and all thats left is things I don't like. the kids chocolate (which I am pretty good about keeping away from anyway) and crackers. Which I can have and include in my calories when I fancy them but I can take of leave them too to be honest.

Attempted to go for a walk yesterday but I felt unwell after only 5 minutes so ended up have to rush back home. Not sure if it was a bug or something but I had felt fine til we got to the park and felt ok after a visit to the toilet. Very odd!

I have dragged the kids out in the rain today. I thought they would complain as it hasn't stopped all day, but they really embraced it and were jumping in puddles and everything. Had to strip them down to get them back in the car Grin They are still off school tomorrow and the weather is supposed to be the same, but they have asked if we can go out again and do the same. I am looking forward to it!

Rocksonabeach · 02/01/2024 18:09

My day got scuppered. Arguing, fighting, torrential rain and a piece of glass right through my heel of my foot. So day off walking today. Just about to cook a chilli con carne from scratch

ThreeRingCircus · 02/01/2024 18:31

Hello all, I'm officially joining back in after a six month break. I have been hiding from the scales over Christmas and knew my eating had gone off the rails but I weighed this morning and cried as I've put on half a stone since the start of December! So I'm officially giving myself a kick up the backside and posting here for some accountability. I have to do this, I feel awful at this weight and uncomfortable in my own body. So here we go, I'm determined to do it in 2024.

SW: 15st 1lb
CW: 15st 1lb
GW: 11st

I had a little cry to my lovely DH this morning and he said when I lose a stone he'll buy me a pair of Sweaty Betty leggings that I've been coveting. So that's my motivation!

The plan is to focus on upping my fruit and vegetable intake and to drastically limit snacking and alcohol. I do go to the gym twice a week so will continue with that and focus on getting more steps in and doing more yoga at home.

Today:

Breakfast: Coffee and a banana

Lunch: Roast dinner at a pub with my family but didn't have alcohol or a pudding. I chose to enjoy it and have a very light dinner to balance it out.

Dinner: Greek yoghurt and melon.

Exercise: Yoga at home

Healthyhappymama · 02/01/2024 18:53

I'm definitely up for for joining. I've put on a couple stone and need to shift it and be healthy in general. I'm doing dry January too. I was supposed to start today but ended up getting a takeaway, so I need to start tomorrow!! We can all do this!!

ImALittlePea · 02/01/2024 20:17

Finished the day with a cuppa just before the eating window closes and on 1,350 calories. Tomorrow is a day off (belated Christmas party 🎉) but I roasted a chicken breast this evening to have with a salad or wrap for lunch beforehand, so I feel prepared on that front.

We've got this gang!
