January 2024! Fresh start & develop new habits. Join-in to reset & refresh and become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

I'm in!
Just weighed in this morning - only put 5lbs on from last recorded weight so not too bad.

I've got around 2 stone to lose ideally but (and I'm sure this sounds very stupid!) I'm not exactly blessed in the boob department - they're already looking a bit sad and I'm worried what they will look like with another 2 stone weight loss 🙈 hopefully someone can relate!

I'm planning on getting back to the gym tomorrow and may use myfitness pal to track calories.

TheRealHousewife · 28/12/2023 10:28

Welcome to the thread @rumhamm. I have the opposite problem where boobs are concerned and I've always wished they were smaller 😅

Trying to find some motivation to pull myself together too. I subscribed to ww on Black Friday so following this with lower carb and potentially 16:8.... I started this and was doing fine but missed a hot chocolate when it was so cold but hopefully it's warmed up a bit now so won't be a thing.

Goal is ultimately ti lose about 3st to lose but hoping to focus more on just being consistent with food, less alcohol and exercise... I have a peloton and hoping to put some weights in.

104c · 28/12/2023 10:39

I'm 5'8 and 14st 9lb but I really don't feel like I'm that 'big'. I wear size 14-16 clothes, sometimes 18 on the bottom (my hips are a good 15 inches bigger than my waist). I run 2-3x a week and eat a relatively healthy diet most of the time. I'm also hypothyroid.
I want to lose 3-4st before TTC in June 2024, with 1st of that before a holiday in Feb.
Good luck everyone x

GrumpySausage · 28/12/2023 11:05

Hello, can I join please?

I'm currnetly 14stone 1 (well that's what it said through my bleary eyes first thing this morning) and I'm 5ft 8.
I had lost a stone and a half over the past year and got down to 13st8 but it's creeping back on. I'm probably less worried about the scales to be honest, more about how I look. I've seen a few photos recently where I look puffy and doughy faced (how to get slim elbows?!) and I want to tone up.

I go spinning/gym classonce or twice a week and walk a fair bit (school run/lunch walk etc) but it's either feast or famine with me. For example last night I did a double spinning/bootcamp session but i then treated myself with mozzarella sticks, pate and half a terrys chocolate orange.

I've got my fitness pal so I'm going to start tracking my calories (honestly) and keep up my exercise.

I'm hoping to be 13.7 soon again but nothing lower will be a bonus!

Penguin2024 · 28/12/2023 00:32

Hello there
Am with you all in spirit. I don't have a proper plan as I seem to fail at all diets! But will cut out sugar and go for very low fat, only eat when hungry, try to measure portions, and get out and move more. My main problem is comfort eating when feeling tired, exhausted, overwhelmed or low, and usually late night eating. So I will need to find ways to tackle this. Good luck everyone.

Please be aware than women need around 30-40g fat a day in their diet for health reasons so don't go too low!

EasternEcho · 28/12/2023 12:50

I will also join in if it is ok. I've tried and given up so many times in the past few years. I'm trying again from today and will weigh in on Wednesday. I am 52, preimenopausal and my sugar cravings are off the charts and tend to eat uncontrollably at nights. I need to do IF and very low carb or Keto to lose weight and keep off the sugar.

wiltingflower · 28/12/2023 13:56

Thank you for the new thread!

I'll be joining in again. I started on low carb and have been introducing normal foods with smaller portions back into my diet since November ish. I'm trying to get a range of whole foods, lots of fruit/veg, protein in my diet. Trying to get enough protein in while vegetarian has been somewhat tricky. I will have a smaller deficit now because I'm closer to my end goal.

I've spent time (months) realising what foods I enjoy and and only eat what I really want to eat now, no more forcing myself to eat or finish food off that I don't enjoy, no more comfort eating or mindless snacking. I definitely have healthier eating habits and a healthier lifestyle now compared to before, even compared to when I used to run, go to the gym and average out 5 workout classes weekly because my diet, mental health and attitude to food was so poor. I'm really proud that I eat better than ever before, much more nutritious.

I've been enjoying doing Caroline Girvan's Iron series and will continue that for my muscles and bones. I'm trying to get 10k steps in daily. I also have Les Mills and enjoy doing a little bit of Body Balance and Combat. I want to improve my strength, flexibility and balance or at least maintain what I can do now.

TheRealHousewife · 28/12/2023 14:53

The Weather is totally pants! Got soaked earlier.

@swimmingdory Sounds a sensible plan and adding weights to an exercise regime is very beneficial 👍

Welcome @104c Babies and holidays are excellent motivators 👍 You sound statuesque and hourglass 👌.

Hi @GrumpySausage < love your tag 😅 Weights and bands are excellent for toning up as well as building strength. I’m a big fan of tracking and using apps like MFP 👍 You’ve outlined a plan and all it needs is implementing.

Welcome to the thread @EasternEcho Keeping satiated and blood sugars balanced will help counteract snacking and late night eating. Hormonal changes can disrupt our best intentions and healthy eating.

Welcome back @wiltingflower Sounds an excellent way forward! 👏. I’ll go and google Caroline Girvans, thanks for the pointer 👍

Hello, I lost 1st 3lbs from September and have the same to lose again. I joined a brand new local PureGym in November 2022 and built up a good exercise routine over the last year or so. I use Nutracheck and do 5:2 and 16:8.

TheRealHousewife · 29/12/2023 07:50

Good Morning

Welcome to the thread @shearwater2 . Youve discovered what works for you; 1st 3lb is good steady progress 👍

After a couple of weeks off I have weighed this morning and I’ve gained 1.6kg. Initially was going to not weigh until next week but anyway it’s not as bad as I had thought it would be. I’ve got a busy weekend and family do involving food so it’s going to be tricky to get back on track yet. I will try and make better choices over the coming weekend so weigh in next Wednesday is better.
Havent had a chance to catch up on the posts on the December thread but happy to be back on here. @TheRealHousewife your food posts are always very inspiring!
happy Friday all!

Sunshineofyourlove · 29/12/2023 10:06

Hello all, I am back with a name change, and still the same weight as I was before Christmas; lost some, gained some, lost some due to Norovirus...now I'm ready to reset ahead of the new year.

CW 11 s 4
TW 10st 4

I know what I need to do, now I just need to do it!

Thanks @TheRealHousewife for your amazing commitment to these threads and keeping them going for everyone.

TheRealHousewife · 29/12/2023 10:33

Hi @secondtimemumma Thats not too much gain; you’ll soon get that off 👍And thank you 😊

Hi @Sunshineofyourlove Im trying to think who you were previously 😅. I never guess correctly though so you’ll keep your anonymity 😬 These are everyone’s threads but thank you ❤️

Hello everyone and thank you for the new thread @TheRealHousewife.( I’ve name changed, but been with you since the summer)

I had lost 18lbs since the summer, but put three back on over Christmas. I would like to lose another 7ish and or gain some muscle. Cutting out sugar and not eating before lunch is my best approach.

Tibby2024 · 29/12/2023 11:21

Hi please can I also join..

I've got alot of weight to lose but I'm going to be starting the fast 800 on the 2nd Jan for 12 weeks to give me a good headstart. Will be finishing off the last Xmas food till then.

Aiming to do 10000 steps a day everyday to ease myself gently into exercise for a few months first as I've not done any exercise for years and being so large even walking hurts.

Start weight 17.7lbs
Goal weight 11 stone. :)

Good luck to everyone I will be here for the long haul.

tweetypi · 29/12/2023 13:12

I was due to start on 3rd Jan but woke up full of determination today and decided to capitalise on it!

CW: 13 st 3lbs
GW: 10 st (last weighed 6 years and 2 pregnancies ago, on my wedding day!)

I'm palming off all chocolate and cheese on DH and am trying to do TRE, had a late breakfast/early lunch at 11am and then will have an early ish dinner at 6 and plan to call it a day.

Good luck to those of you who have also started.

PatienceOfEngels · 29/12/2023 14:01

Jumping back on for January!

I've lost just over a stone the last 3 months by:
-cutting UPF and sugar to a minimum
-Eating as many whole foods as possible, 30+ plants a week
-no alcohol (almost a year now)
-12 hour food free window (so basically no snacking after dinner)
-3 good homemade meals a day with mainly fruit/veg as snacks
-mostly cut bread at lunchtime (either leftovers from dinner or homemade soup)
-no caffeine after midday (found it really affects my sleep, stops me from drinking sugary cappuccinos at work as well).

Exercise-wise I usually try to get outside everyday for a short walk.

I don't calorie count and still eat what rice/pasta but just go easy on my portion sizes.

Foodwise I want to keep doing what I'm doing.

Exercise wise I'd like to do more yoga and mini strength workouts.

Going to take me a little while to reset after Christmas week (we were away visiting family and I always find it harder not being in my own space).

Will weigh in on Wednesday to start the year off. I'm almost at a healthy BMI but would like another stone off this year.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 29/12/2023 15:24

I'm still not planning on overhauling the diet until 3rd Jan, but I did get up and do an exercise class this morning to help me start to ease back into it!

TheRealHousewife · 29/12/2023 15:30

Good Afternoon All

Jumping on board too! I join every January it seems and never last til the end of the month. Hoping this time I will! I weighed this morning and was disgusted with myself. Hasn't stopped my eating chocolate/cheese again today.

I plan on starting NYD with calorie counting. I am also doing Dry Jan with 2 pre planned exceptions. But I will make up for those days into February. I'll post my official start weight on Monday!

CumbrianExile · 29/12/2023 15:39

Forgot to say, your curry looks amazing with the shredded sprouts and leeks @TheRealHousewife I might try that!

Spudlover · 29/12/2023 15:49

Hello @TheRealHousewife I will join again! I found the last thread really helpful.

I had lost 23lbs since the beginning of October but by my current estimations, gained about 5lbs over Christmas. I will try and be reasonably sensible, but then start again properly on the 2nd Jan with weigh in on the 3rd. Currently 11st 13 and aiming for 10st 4.

I will be using noom until my plan runs out at the end of Jan, then switching to calorie counting. I try to reduce carbs as that works well
for me but I’m not super strict.

Aiming for 3 exercise sessions a week, usually half an hour treadmill followed by half an hour of weights and bodyweight.

Food today:
Leftover sprout and bacon bubble and squeak, poached egg
Apple and cottage cheese
Courgetti bolognese
Probably gin.

Grumpydogmum · 29/12/2023 16:00

Joining too, hoping to stick to it this year. Have about 3 and a half stone to loose, will start on the 3rd.

Newname2308 · 29/12/2023 16:08

Decided to weigh today and just get back in the zone!
SW 70kg
29/12 64.8kg
TW 56kg

Put on 0.9kg over Xmas which is fine. Clothes beginning to feel tight again, so I’m using that as my reminder to stop over-indulging!
