January 2024! Fresh start & develop new habits. Join-in to reset & refresh and become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

Hi @CumbrianExile Whispers in your ear … don’t be disappointed with yourself; be your own friend. We are so tough on ourselves and that will feed the disruptive cycle of eating our feelings. Rather than feel despair try to feel optimistic for a healthier future. Don’t be that person who self sabotage's and gives up ❤️

Lovely to have you join us again @Spudlover. You’ve done marvellously well over the past several months and long may it continue! 👏👏👏

Welcome to the thread @Grumpydogmum 👍

Hi @Newname2308 Well done not putting a load on (unlike me 😬) and I’m sure you’ll soon shift that itsy bit of a gain 👍

I've been widowed 5 years officially as of 23/12/18

After 5 years of up and down and a miserable 40th and 3 children all with complex needs.

I've decided I need to be selfish this year because if I don't get myself back then I will be useless to them.

Off the antidepressants 12 weeks now. And officially diagnosed with anemia and medication is working just need to drop 3st by August so when I turn 41 I'm not miserable. Also maid of honour for my sister in October...

Good luck everyone xx

CumbrianExile · 29/12/2023 20:59

Thanks @TheRealHousewife , you are correct, I need to put myself first occasionally and not self sabotage. Not easy sometimes but hopefully with the support of the thread I will do it this year ♥️

Penguinmouse · 29/12/2023 21:28

I’m in! Love to exercise but had a baby last year and find that time to go to the gym and working full time is challenging so need to address my diet more to make up for it. I’m curvy but quite tall but would really like to lose 20kg this year. Will be tracking food via MyFitnessPal and my steps and exercise via my Fitbit.

LeftyLou · 29/12/2023 22:35

Hi everyone hope everyone has had a good Christmas/happy holidays. After a badly 2 weeks where I put on 7 lbs (I think) I managed to lose 1.5 lbs the week over Christmas which I am very happy with. I did enjoy it and had what I wanted but I think the fact I didn't go OTT helped. It has put me in a really good mood and mindset for wanting to make an effort now. I am not back to work til 3rd and still in holiday mode so going to have to keep focused as best as I can.

I am going to officially start on 3rd Jan and write down my weight on here as my starting point as well as my measurements (chest, waist and hips) and weigh weekly and update measurements probably once every 4 weeks.

Anyway huge thanks @TheRealHousewifefor the new thread and also for the link to the 12 tips for getting back into it. Some really good ones there. 😊

Hope everyone is doing okay and I'll wish everyone a Happy New Year now 😊

MsHybridFanGirl · 29/12/2023 22:51

Evening all. Did usual dog walk today of about 45 mins but was more of an amble for me. Decided in the evening to go for a walk by myself and did just over 6km whilst listening to a podcast. Will try and do this 3 x a week for now, and join a gym once im in the regular habit. Weighing in tomorrow, not looking forward to that!

MsHybridFanGirl · 29/12/2023 22:54

@WidoweWidowedwarrior83 sorry to hear of your loss five years ago. I have a similar situation and have gained weight over the past few years, also 41 next year and want to feel a lot better than I did this year on my 40th

I'm really so sorry. It's atrocious and my condolences for your loss... not just of your partner but the life you had planned.

My arse didn't see the weight gain coming. Citlatropram killed me off... didn't know I'd gained 3st.

The fog of grief and kids and handling everything and forgetting yourself.... that arse eventually catches up as does the chin and stomach... if you need to talk feel free to pm me xx and good luck xx

TheRealHousewife · 30/12/2023 10:31

One interesting side effect of Christmas style grazing and alcohol consumption is that while I enjoy it in the very short term, it really doesn't make me feel good at all and I've realised than my norm is now healthy eating, very moderate alcohol consumption and slow weight loss.

WeirdPookah · 30/12/2023 13:06

Much as Gonzo rejoins the story after the scary part in Muppets Christmas Carol, I'm also back after not joining in in December.

I lost 60lbs in 2023

I estimate I've gained at least 15lbs back over December, possibly more. I can feel it and see it.

I am going to track on MyNetDiary and the fitness tracker on my phone.

The weather is atrocious and we are going stir crazy as we are used to getting outside. Been for a short walk today, but children are still off for another week and a bit yet (!!) so won't be able to the proper longer walks I enjoy on my own.

TheRealHousewife · 30/12/2023 13:27

@shearwater2 I couldn’t agree more with your post! Healthy eating is nutritious as well as delicious 😋

Hi @WeirdPookah You’ve done fantastically well in 2023 and you lost an awesome amount of weight!!! Congratulations 🥳 In less than 48hours, December will be so last year. Don’t look back and concentrate on going forwards. 👍

I'd like to join please. I've been dieting since June but am now losing a bit of momentum.

Original SW - 93kg
Current weight and first goal - 72kg (puts me at overweight)
Ultimate Goal - 55kg

I'd like to get to 69kg initially as this puts me in the 10's and I haven't been there for a very long time. I'm only 155cm so still very heavy but I certainly feel better.

Anyway, I'll pop up at least weekly to record my weight but I will be lurking every day!

Howbizzare22 · 30/12/2023 19:07

I’m in! I have 3 stone to lose x

Midgetwithaplan · 30/12/2023 19:37

Hi can I join you please? And I'm going to try and last longer than 4 days this year.

My current weight is 76kg and I'm determined that this is the last year that I'm an overweight BMI going into the new year (although I think I've said that for the last decade). I turn 40 in August and I know if I don't lose it in my 30s I'm never going to be able to lose it. My current goal weight is 68kg first to be a healthy BMI and then to go to 60kg.

So my plans are whole food, Mediterranean style eating with a reduction in ultra processed foods and loads of fruit and veg, and far less snacking (it's not unusual for me to eat 1000+ calories in snacks during a horrible shift).

I'm also going to prioritise healthy activity and try and reduce the number of 50 hour weeks at work. Because of my scheduling I find it easier to meet goals if they're annual rather than weekly, so I'm setting myself a couple of these so I don't decide I've failed the second week on January and give up.

The first is to keep my average steps over the year at 10000+, and the second is to go to the gym/fitness classes 150 times over the year.

I hope everybody else is feeling positive and motivated for the new year, I love it when 1st January is on a Monday!

MrsPepperpotty · 30/12/2023 20:55

I'd like to join please! I'll be turning 50 in 2024 and planning a party so I'd really like to lose weight and feel healthier before then. Not sure of my current weight as I haven't weighed myself for ages, but I'll do a weigh in on Wednesday and post it then.

Mummyofthewildones · 30/12/2023 21:00

First time hopping on one of these! I'm 12st 12, would like to get down to 11st, which was my pre baby weight.
Calorie counting normally works for me, plus I need to get back to the gym. Doing a very intense masters module at the moment and I do have a tendency to eat my feelings. I'm joining for a bit of camaraderie and accountability to hopefully get back into all my old jeans 😇

NphysT · 30/12/2023 22:31

Hi all, can I join?

Will weigh in and officially start on the 3rd but have about 2 stone I want to lose. Have previously lost and kept off 2.5 stone but ready to now shift the rest.
Am currently going through a missed miscarriage and waiting on surgery for it so first few days may not be fully on track. Won't be following a plan, just keeping an eye on portion sizes and approximate calories and exercise at least 2x a week to start with.

Endoftethermum1 · 30/12/2023 22:45

I’d like to join! 10kg to lose and I don’t mind doing it slowly although 16:8 fasting worked in the last I sometimes binged a bit when breaking fast so I’m going to cut out snacks/chocolate and carbs and just try calorie counting.
Will weigh in on 3/1/24! Wish me luck.
I ve joined here for some accountability!

VallesMarineris · 30/12/2023 22:58

I want to concentrate on 16:8 Intermittent Fasting. Reduce carbs, increase fruit, veg, salad. My target is one pound every few days, in half-stone blocks. Ideally totalling seven pounds every month.

Exercise is sorting out shambles of a house and garden. Most important is remaining calm and creating a nurturing environment.

Fullfatandfortyplus · 30/12/2023 23:02

I’d like to join please. Dread to think how much I’ll have to lose by Jan 7th which is when I’ll start. A week of parties and gluttony still ahead of me. I reckon will be around 2 and a half stone. Please God not more.

Stripyunicorn · 30/12/2023 23:05

I would like to join please.
Been hovering around 12 stone 10 ish since ds2, I'm only 5'3 so about 3 stone overweight.
After Christmas it's probably more like 13 stone plus, will weigh on 3rd.

Planning on intermittent fasting with an eating window of 11am-7pm ish. Also will be trying to reduce snacking in general.

2024fit · 30/12/2023 23:17

I went into the pandemic around 11 stone so at 5ft 2 was already overweight, then peaked at 13 stone with a 38 inch waist by 2021 after 18 months of comfort eating, inactivity and insomnia.

After improving my diet and getting more active I’m now hovering around the 11 stone mark again and my waist is 32.5 inches.

The goal is to lose another 1.5 stone and a few more inches around my waist in 2024 and get my body fat percentage down a bit more by consistently :

  • logging food in Myfitness pal and eating under 1500 calories
  • Eating a low sugar diet and limiting things like cakes and biscuits to holidays/ parties etc.
  • Using my walking pad for 45 minutes a day and doing at least 3 x dance or Pilates workouts at home every week.
  • Aiming for a minimum of 7 hours sleep partly because I make poor food choices when sleep deprived.

@Mummyofthewildones we sound very similar in terms of pre and current weights! Also not really joined a thread like this before.
After my 3rd child I’ve never really put the effort in with diet enough. I’d love to reduce the Mum tum a bit to get into my size 12’s again!

Moonshine5 · 30/12/2023 23:32

Good luck
