Fresh new year, fresh new start, fresh new habits. Jump right in to reset & refresh to become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

PS - In the coming days I’ll post some links which some members might find useful. Feel free to share your own links, recipes and photos too 😊

I made waffles for breakfast, well, lunch, as we didn't get up until midday. We are going for a walk along the canal once we are dressed so not the best breakfast but it is New Year's Day and we are doing some exercise and didn't have breakfast so on balance I'm ok with that. I e been sleeping 10 hours and still feeling tired so I need some fresh air to blow away the cobwebs. I think it might be pasta for dinner. Probably macaroni cheese with some broccoli thrown in. No one likes broccoli but I've said I'll be adding more vegetables to things.
After today I'm putting away a lot of the chocolates and biscuits and saving them for our holiday at half term. It will save me money to have treats to hand as well as limit the Christmas holiday unhealthy habits.

Bumblebeehum · 01/01/2023 13:54

Hey @buzzofthebumblebee, loving the username 🐝

Tattyoldted · 01/01/2023 14:06

Please may I join in? I’m weighing tomorrow at Slimming World, so enjoying the last of the Christmas food today before throwing myself back into eating better tomorrow. Going to walk to my meeting, I’ll be aiming to do this every week to get some exercise. I lost nearly a stone before Christmas, so let’s see how much of that I put back on! Good luck everyone 🍀

Submariner · 01/01/2023 14:33

Please may I join? I did really well last year following a thread (can't remember which) and had great success in getting into my 'goal jeans'. I'm in them today with the top button undone 🤦‍♀️

I'm doing Dry Jan and will be trying for Dr Greger's Daily Dozen and lots of exercise. I'm not starting any calorie counting or fasting at this stage, just trying to get a bit healthier in my habits first and hoping to lose some water weight in the first couple of weeks. I'll decide on a longer term strategy after that.

Starting weight: 10st 11lbs
January goal: 10st 7lbs
Overall goal: 9st

Happy new year!! Hi to familiar and new faces!

What a busy thread for the new year 🎉 lots of commitment and inspiration, c'mon ladies, we've got this!

Way too much to reply specifically, apart from two posts that jumped out at me.

Firstly, what a delicious NYE meal @TheRealHousewife, in particular very impressed with the homemade onion rings.

And also - I can totally relate to the 'all or nothing' mentality @HappinessDragon, although I have to say I have managed to get a grip on that over the course of 2022. You can do this!

Having said the above... I drank to excess yesterday to see the new year in - whoops! 🥴😂

Setting my sights on losing and keeping off around 7lb. Would like to drop 2lb this week, which is half the Christmas gain.

Today's meals aren't quite back on plan yet, but it's still the weekend 😁

Lunch - bacon bagel with two hash browns
Dinner - roast dinner with chicken pie. Making excessive amounts as I have a real hankering for bubble and squeak, sausages and eggs tomorrow 👌

milkfromthesleepycow · 01/01/2023 14:57

@Submariner goal jeans are wonderful. I've still got a pair of 501s that I hope to fit into one day (30" waist so maybe a life long aspiration 😂)

Last day of a deload week this week so been taking it easy exercise wise
Got Thai mince and spinach and tomato rice planned for dinner. Maybe a side of broccoli to add in more veg

lipstickwoman · 01/01/2023 15:46

I lost enough weight to get to a normal BMI and a size 10 a couple of years ago, and kept it off until December, when I completely lost a grip. I've got 12lbs to come off.

I lost almost 4 stones by cutting out alcohol, crisps, snacks, cakes etc and walking. So my plan is to do it again, before I slide even further down the slippery slope I'm on.

Lizsmum · 01/01/2023 15:52

So my goal for December was to stay the same. Sadly Christmas happened and today's weight was 12 stone 5lb - so my target for January is to get back under 12 stone.

I'm trying to convince myself that eating the remaining Christmas chocolate etc is a bad idea.

HappinessDragon · 01/01/2023 16:13

Hi everyone. How is day one going?

I didn't drink last night as figured I only have a couple of days left off work so don't want to spend half of one of them feeling crap and scoffing rubbish.
The husband was supposed to be starting with me today but then decided he'd start when he went back to work and got himself a take out for lunch and then started on the gin! @ImALittlePea I think he's got the all or nothing mentality today!

I'm on twice a day thermogenic, increased my water, increased my exercise, home made kedgeree for lunch and I've got a load of stock simmering in the oven to make pho and ramen bases for the freezer.

I'm going to make a list of what food we have left over from Christmas and figure out what to do with it - Freezing, turning into other meals etc - and also make a list of what we have and how much in my journal so next Christmas I know what to cut back on.

emptythelitterbox · 01/01/2023 16:15

@TheRealHousewife Thanks for posting the happiness calendar. Great daily reminders to put ourselves first some every day

I started yesterday and it's been difficult but stayed the course. I'm strongly considering cutting out all caffeine for at least a week to see if it helps this terrible insomnia.

Mine are 501s! I can't stand stretchy jeans so I treated myself to some 'proper denim' jeans. Does make them pretty unforgiving though 🤣

SanFranBear · 01/01/2023 17:43

Thank you so much, RealHousewife... didn't think my first post would be on p7 but I'm in - got to get my mojo back after a very indulgent December. Waves to everyone, old and new!

I thought I'd be brave and post my 'before' and 'now' photos. The first one was taken exactly a year ago and is what made me take real stock. The second is same place, same time but almost 6 stone lighter! I feel like a different woman and so am determined to keep this feeling alive and never fall back to picture 1!

I had a good start to the year.

I went out for breakfast with one of my daughters and we share an açaí bowl with fruit and nuts, and a Mediterranean omelette with a slice of toast each. It was delicious but I’m going to do a few random blood sugar tests as I definitely had a funny turn within 10 minutes of eating it that lasted about 20 minutes. I had to sit down in a shop and I’m wondering if it was just too much fruit for me at one time. I felt awful.

Lunch was a chicken leg eaten standing at the fridge door. Like you do.

Dinner was turkey and vegetable soup with a bit of cheese and two crackers.

today wasn’t as well balanced as my meals usually are and my problem is definitely portion control rather a lack of good nutrition.

milkfromthesleepycow · 01/01/2023 18:00

@SanFranBear those photos are amazing- you've done so well! And look fantastic!
I've been a bit intermittent with reading- did the house move go well?

fallfallfall · 01/01/2023 18:44

150.79
multivit, fiber, water ✅
first goal get under 150 which won't be hard based on the salt from last nights supper!! ham, sauerkraut, seasoned the potatoes, salt in the salad dressing and even my current pound of butter is salted (i often grab the unsalted one and honestly neither dh or i can spot the difference).
it's early over here, plan of action 2 leslie video's (one in the am, one in the pm)
meals: breakfast was calorie dense and supper will be as well. so lunch needs careful planning as well as avoiding any between meal nibbling.

SanFranBear · 01/01/2023 19:08

Aw, thanks, milk... and the move was a bit of a disaster - lots went wrong, we all got sick (including one of my kitties), old house was a total nightmare to sort BUT new place feels homely now and I really like it here!

So hungover today that I've had one final, junk laden day to try and make myself human! I've got Rhubard Crumble in the oven so a big dollop of that with custard should do the trick. Then a good night's sleep, ready to be more disciplined from tomorrow!

fallfallfall · 01/01/2023 19:26

OH @SanFranBear !!! well done
hey i eat rhubarb 3-5 times a week, great vitamin c and fiber...dirt cheap as well.
i'm happy to hear that the new place feels homey.

Lizsmum · 01/01/2023 19:53

@SanFranBear wow!

SuperHandss · 01/01/2023 19:55

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

I’m so in! I’m going down a calorie counting/my fitness pal route. I got quite trim over the lockdowns due to stress then found love & put on 1 1/2 stone in 18 months. I’d like to lose a stone (making me 9st & size 8-10). I’d love to conceive this year & I want my health to be tip top.

The med diet sounds interesting too 🍅

SuperHandss · 01/01/2023 19:56

Oh & I’m attempting Dry Jan too.

AutisticLegoLover · 01/01/2023 19:57

@SanFranBear WOW!!! That's amazing!

I love rhubarb crumble. Apple crumble. Rhubarb and apple crumble. Crumble is awesome especially with custard or vanilla ice cream.

LollipopViolet · 01/01/2023 20:25

Today hasn't been too bad.

Cereal for breakfast
Lunch was some Wensleydale with cranberries, with chopped cucumber and tomatoes.
A little satsuma as a snack
Dinner was leftovers from last night - beef stew and dumplings.

Green tea and water to drink, with one can of Diet Coke.

I need to step on the scales. I need to see where the starting point is - I've booked a week off in May to go on a sunshine holiday with a friend. I need to feel good round the pool. I've also got a figure skating competition in April and measurements for my dress are being done end of February.

Tomorrow I'm getting on the scales. Wish me luck...

fallfallfall · 01/01/2023 20:30

@LollipopViolet i'm an old skate MOM, my dd was a lovely skater. when she has access to ice she's on it!
she's packed her skates from canada to the uk to france and canada every winter trip.

TofuonToast · 01/01/2023 20:36

Okay just a scramble of thoughts here.

I want to change how I think about food. That’s going to start with calorie counting so I can get my head clear of my body woes. Then I want to move onto mindful eating. So I’m in this for the long game.

Issues

  1. I use food to transition from one activity to the next

  2. I use food to manage my emotions

  3. I use food to treat myself

I have a small guided meditation to hopefully get me through these, plus I will put in systems to make eating in those circumstances more difficult and make alternatives easier

Wfh has definitely been an issue with putting on weight so I need to think about that.

I want to find ways to treat myself and not from food. Spas/massages when affordable but other cheaper things. I don’t want weight management to become one long miserable existence. I want to eat to live not live to eat.

So my SW 154lbs (pre Xmas binge)
Lost 9lbs (pre Christmas binge!)
Aiming for the 126lbs mark. I’ll be lovely and slim at that weight and I can’t wait!

The Plan
Calorie counting 1400-1800 average

1 eye on mindful eating

Lots of salad/veg to bulk up meals

Create systems to make treat eating more difficult and alternatives more fun/accessible

Seek support on here
Eating twice a day only
Using my urge surf meditation when emotional or transitional eating
Make conscious food choices
Exercise for fun and pleasure not as a punishment
Schedule non food related treat times

Early to bed and early to rise

LaurelHunter · 01/01/2023 21:28

Hi everyone, thanks for all of the advice and encouragement so far @TheRealHousewife . Your tips and guidance are really helping to get into the right mindset already.

SW - 11 stone 1.5 lbs
GW 9 stone 10.

I’ve been reading the really helpful ‘Brain over Binge’ the last few days which really echoes what you’ve been saying about trying nothing too drastic. My meals are often healthy and then just get undone by snacking and binging. So my initial plan is to just try to eat healthily and not binge, using the advice in the book and also set aside time to exercise a few times a week. I can ramp up to a stricter plan if I feel I’m not progressing? Happy New Year to you all.
