Fresh new year, fresh new start, fresh new habits. Jump right in to reset & refresh to become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

PS - In the coming days I’ll post some links which some members might find useful. Feel free to share your own links, recipes and photos too 😊

@TheRealHousewife totally agree with not eliminating it before getting advice and/or testing but in our case DD's consultant wanted to get her well first and test for the reasons later. So she's off gluten (and has been for 5 months) and is much better. The plan is to re introduce for 2-4 weeks in 12 months time and then test. She was very unwell and missing school, so he wanted to get her better and test and a suitable time for us as a family. So we'll re introduce over Christmas when she's at home and not missing much in terms of schooling, then test early Jan.

Had a whole looong message that got deleted when MN randomly refreshed. Grrrr.

So just a quick check-in for accountability - particularly happy with the amounts I've eaten today as they feel more normal and regulated, rather than always feeding a sugar crash/starving hungry.

Breakfast - chunk of homemade sponge cake (I know, I know. It was left out on the kitchen counter), toastie, coffee

Work snacks - 2x Bear fruit yoyo things, water

Lunch - chicken wrap, mocha

Goals for the weekend don't get derailed by DP's preferred way of starting the weekend, which is to sleep late and then have nothing but coffee and a pastry till dinnertime. This does not work for me in any way - from digestion to mood. Just do my own thing ✌🏻

TheRealHousewife · 20/01/2023 15:20

Hi @ginsparkles yes, yes I totally understand. Unchecked celiac disease is very serious. I myself suffered 2 significant stomach bleeds (prior diagnosis) but since I’ve gone totally gf I’m much better. I always know when I’ve been accidentally glutened! Side note, celiac disease usually co-exists with other autoimmune diseases. In my case hypothyroidism, joint pain and endometriosis. One of the reasons (along with wanting weight loss) for me in totally overhauling my diet was to manage inflammation by including more anti-inflammatory foods in my daily diet.

@Cloudberries123 Im finding Mumsnet very glitchy at the moment. Totally frustrating when we lose posts.

@TheRealHousewife I suspect that it's "just" intolerance but time will tell. She knows instantly if she's had either gluten or too much lactose. I'm lucky that she's managing it sensibly.

AutisticLegoLover · 20/01/2023 19:29

1785 calories consumed today which is over my usual but with no dinner yesterday it balances out. AF finally arrived and explains the hunger. 5 days late ffs. My cycle ranges from 7 days to 48 days so it's anyone's guess when it will turn up and with two weeks pmt sometimes 3 it's a challenge not exploding with hormone induced anything. Now that it has deigned to show up I should drop a couple of pounds by next week. I hope so anyway. It's Friday and I want to eat stuff but I won't because I'm not hungry. I had pasta with broccoli and sweetcorn again for dinner followed by 4 after 8 mints and feel quite happy. Crumpets were back in stock by this afternoon so tomorrow's elevenses is sorted 😃

I hope everyone has a lovely weekend and can relax. If you have tendency to eat and drink while watching tv in the evenings then I highly recommend getting a gym ball and bouncing on it while watching. You can't eat or drink while bouncing and it's great exercise. It's suppose to tone your stomach but there's too much lard over my abs to be able to tell. My legs are still feeling the effects of last Sundays 3 hour session though so it must really work them. My calves ache from that and the hills. I'm finishing the work week on 50 miles and I'm aiming for that to be 65 by Sunday night. Does anyone whose have a Fitbit? If so, do you do challenges?

Ninjachicken · 21/01/2023 08:10

Happy weekend everyone!
determined to have a healthy weekend. Too easy to undo a week in two days!
it’s freezing here but will try not to retreat to the sofa!
B: tea and toast
L: leek and potato soup (if I make it in time)
D: chicken stir fry
snacks: satsumas and yoghurt

no chocolate!! I found out from MFP there are 40 calorie’s in one after eight! Is that true?? They. Are. So. Small. !!!!! 🥹

AutisticLegoLover · 21/01/2023 09:11

@Ninjachicken there's 73 in 2 after 8s according to the box sat in front of me that I won't be having.

62.25kg this morning. A tiny loss but a loss.

I've been reading about ozempic and I'm quite concerned how many people on done threads are taking it when they aren't diabetic. I think we'd all love a magic medication to lose weight but not at the financial cost of that drug or the potential serious side effects. It's really dangerous that those with anorexia or bulimia can just order online. For the obese using it though the studies show they put the weight back on after stopping . I'd be really angry to spend all that money and keep having to downs it or put the weight back on.

Da mentioned rhubarb last night and I might make an apple and rhubarb crumble later. I can make it in individual ramekins so that they portion size is controlled. Dd wants to make truffles today. We've not made them before but it looks easy enough.

Have a great weekend!

Ninjachicken · 21/01/2023 10:08

@AutisticLegoLover well done on the loss!
i make truffles a lot with my daughter. We use annabel karmel’s recipe. It is super simple and works well.
not sure you are allowed to post pictures of actual recipes?

Cloudberries123 · 21/01/2023 10:11

@Ninjachicken I wolfed down a (tiny) brownie bite thing the other day on the way home from work, and then noticed on the packet that it had 42g of sugar! That was a real eye-opener.

I know they're controversial but I also found it educational when they brought in the calories on menus and display cabinets. I've done quite a lot of work to re-wire my mindset to be positive about calories (ie when I hear calories I think 'energy') but I truly had no clue about just how much 'energy' was in various foods. No wonder I'm overweight if I've been consistently eating what I thought was a normal diet but probably had 3 times the calories I need!

Have a good Saturday everyone. Ours has started really well, the baby slept beautifully and so did we. I've sneaked off for some alone time and a walk while they're cosied up indoors.

So far -

Breakfast - sourdough toast and butter with leftover lentils, the Merchant Gourmet French style packet. Highly recommend. And 1 large coffee 😇

menomonster · 21/01/2023 11:00

I am a very occasional poster but I do read the messages and am enjoying the support and inspiration, so thanks everybody for sharing. Weighed in this morning and I am 3 lbs down from starting two weeks ago, very happy with this. I am following a loose sort of low Glycemic load/index diet, and trying to fit in exercise but that is still a work in progress. I really recommend the low GI/GL approach if you are looking for something new - it fits in quite easily with family meals and is not so restrictive that you start having cravings. I have typically been having porridge with blueberries and a tiny bit of honey or scrambled/boiled egg with lightly buttered the bread for breakfast, then stew or a sandwich with rye break for lunch at work, and then for dinner I have the same as the rest of the family, but I replace the carbs with vegetables or with a healthier carb, so if they are having pasta, then I make in addition some lentil pasta for my husband and me (he is quite keen to lose a few pounds too). I have had a few off days (we have had two family birthdays this month, so meals out and cake etc) but it was OK getting back on the bandwagon.

SW: 11s 6 lb
CW: 11s 3lb
GW: 10s 6lbs

Have a good weekend all!

TheRealHousewife · 21/01/2023 11:33

Good Morning All

@menomonster That's a great result so far! Well done 👍

@Cloudberries123 I agree about knowing the calorie content of food. To be informed is empowering!

@AutisticLegoLover Well done on your loss 👏 The drug you mentioned Omi something, Ive read once people stop taking it they gain it all back plus some. Not to say whatever it is doing to people's bodily systems iyswim. Is it the one they inject?

Menu
Meal 1 - Scrambled egg and gf thin.
Meal 2 - Spag Bol with buttered cabbage.
Tea, black coffee and water.

Exercise - Nothing formal, just house jobs.

Enjoy your Saturday ... stunning here. A crisp sunny day with a light mist. ☀️

Love those lentil packs Cloud. I use the spanish grains too + have with roast veg & baked cod. Yum. Fancy that now, but I'm old Mother Hubbard with a bare cupboard. No idea what I'll do for lunch. Will face that at lunch time.

But I had a bit of a reality realisation this morning. I took a long hard look at myself in the mirror, post shower. I was congratulating myself on my svelteness after loosing 4+ lbs or whatever it is this month. But the harder I looked, the more I saw an overweight (middle age) woman. I've been kidding myself that because the jeans fit better, and the size 12 M&S trousers now fit (vanity sizing for sure !!) I'm super lean and trim. I am most certainly not.

I have a belly that I hide as I constantly suck-it-in (I've got a really good core under the fat !!). My legs are very overweight.

I am leaner and simmer than I was 14+ months ago. But I am still very much overweight, and have been kidding myself that I'm at healthy. I know I need to be about 10 1/2 stone to be healthy BMI - or at least in the 60s kilos.

I'm 50, 5'6", 11 stone 9.

Totally agree about excess calories. It's alarming how calorific "normal" portions and foods are when you know your calorie limit is only about 1500 to get to a healthy weight. It really does have to be a total mindset change, and not a one-off diet.

No point beating myself up about it. I am in charge of my body. Only I put the food in my mouth. I am overweight. I am doing something about it. And I am going to go out for a lovely long walk now, fresh air, audio book, and winter sunshine.

(sorry for long confession...)

AutisticLegoLover · 21/01/2023 12:24

Yes, it's the one that's injected once a week. There's a thread where the poster has been very rude to me when I questioned it Hmm I told her there were lots ofcwelcom

AutisticLegoLover · 21/01/2023 12:26

Lots of welcoming threads over here and got told "bye" which was charming. Well, the drug will help a person lose weight but it won't do anything to help a personality.

@buzzofthebumblebee I hear you. Keep going, you're doing great.

Dd wants homemade pizza today along with making truffles 😩

greenspaces4peace · 21/01/2023 15:46

@AutisticLegoLover dh and I have seen tons of advertising for it, it’s for life! pharmaceutical companies must be rubbing their hands with glee. To me it doesn’t help you learn about your body and how to eat healthy while improving your metabolism.

AutisticLegoLover · 21/01/2023 21:59

I agree. I can see the temptation but it's just not a good idea unless prescribed by a medical professional who knows your complete history.

I'm over my allowance today due to homemade pizza and truffles. The pizza was fine, it's the truffles that did it although I actually only had 1.5 of them so maybe I've over estimated there.

I made a big batch of marinara pasta/pizza sauce today and I'll freeze that in portions tomorrow. I'd happily live on pizza and pasta I think.

takingcareofme2023 · 21/01/2023 22:40

Just hopping on again to say what a nice thread this is with A LOT of compassion and also common sense. Emphasis on sensible sustainable lifestyle rather than quick fix/fad.

I can’t do MFP…it will do my head in ! Tried before. Tendency to get obsessed to the point of definitely not healthy. But I agree with poster above that calories/ energy are useful to know generally. (After 8’s !! 😱)

I too have switched from low fat spread to butter 😋 but posts above reminded me to just be careful with portions…thank you!

Still managing to do 2l water a day with my timed water bottle…really feels like a habit I’ll be able to keep.

Went for a jog yesterday, loved it ! Back to parkrun soon I hope (icy roads put me off this morning)

Made a big pan of veggie soup tonight.

Now going to bed to try to get enough sleep.

Night night x

greenspaces4peace · 21/01/2023 23:57

All’s well here the scale is moving in the right direction, I’m looking forward to tomorrows weigh in.
Sunday though will be a salty salty day!
As I’m hosting a Lunar New Year dinner with friends. A bit of a tradition from a workplace colleague. Less stressful than Christmas or New Years and tons of foodie options.

SingaporeSlinky · 22/01/2023 08:13

Morning all. Feeling good this morning, although a little dehydrated I think, judging by my the colour of my morning pee (sorry, TMI 🫢 )
I think I’ve been trying to have fewer coffees but forgetting to drink water instead.

I have booked onto the 9am classes at my gym all 5 weekdays this week, so let’s see how that goes.

B: coffee
L: Greek yoghurt, granola, seeds
D: spaghetti bolognese

Will try and remember to have more water and a green tea or two.

buzzofthebumblebee · 22/01/2023 13:47

Lovely sunny day here. Just been out for a run then dog walk, so have earned my sit down this afternoon.

B - small banana before run, all bran after
L - salmon & salad (may have slice rye bread if hungry)
D - roast chicken, roast potatoes, cabbage & carrots

10 days left in January (including today).

Thats 10 days to shift another 1 lb or 2.

Loss of 1lb / month Jan - June = 7lbs loss by summer
Loss of 2lb / month Jan - June = 1 stone loss by summer.

Every little bit of resistance helps. Sending positive sunny vibes to you all

greenspaces4peace · 22/01/2023 17:23

148.5 a solid drop and really encouraging.
plan: light breakfast lunch and 3pm snack.
and not overdo the dessert treats.
i’ve modified most of the dishes I’m making to increase the veggie content and am using low sodium soya sauce.

AutisticLegoLover · 22/01/2023 18:01

@buzzofthebumblebee that's a really encouraging way of looking at things and very achievable. My birthday is in the summer and I'd love to be slimmer for then.

I've had my usual lunch of yogurt and berries for dinner today. Crumpets and tea for breakfast and a few snacks.

SingaporeSlinky · 22/01/2023 18:20

Done well today, ish. Had a few coffees, one green tea. I ended up having a pain au chocolate while doing errands, then felt guilty and decided that would be lunch, rather than a snack I hadn’t planned for. Only just looked at the packet and it was only 185 cals which is less than I thought. Was super hungry by dinner time, which was spag bol as planned. Did the proper celery, carrot and onion, and used passata and tomato purée instead of a jar. Was delicious and no doubt saved lots of sugary, salty cals. I must be well under 1200 cals today, although I’m not logging on MFP. I used to really like it, but just cant be bothered to log at the moment.

greenspaces4peace · 22/01/2023 18:57

@SingaporeSlinky i much prefer conometer to mfp, more accurate and easier to use.
i don't understand the macro's at all but it's available should i ever choose to incorporate that.

AutisticLegoLover · 22/01/2023 19:06

@greenspaces4peace well done that's brilliant!
