Fresh new year, fresh new start, fresh new habits. Jump right in to reset & refresh to become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

PS - In the coming days I’ll post some links which some members might find useful. Feel free to share your own links, recipes and photos too 😊

@greenspaces4peace not heard of that one, I’ll take a look, thanks!

greenspaces4peace · 22/01/2023 20:03

thanks @AutisticLegoLover , careful logging and measuring really does help.
i've also up'd my exercise from 45 minutes a day to 60.

my rice is looking great, with the bean sprouts, red and green peppers, and celery. probably 50/50 mix. so a half cup serving is really only 1/4 cup rice and 1/4 cup veggies.

greenspaces4peace · 22/01/2023 20:10

@SingaporeSlinky there is no member input so the food items are per manufacturers and there more measurement options for each food item (so tsp, tbsp, cups, or g) all listed for each item.
recipes are easier to put together and there is a favorite section for foods you regularly purchase/eat.
oh and i can share recipes with my dh who uses it as well. so when he cooks something up, he enters it and we can share the nutrition/calorie info.
i have it on my desktop, dh on his ipad, and on both our phones.

Ninjachicken · 22/01/2023 20:15

Really like the idea of thinking about every bit of resistance as progress. Changing habits long term.
not a bad day really. 6 Km walk this afternoon. Weetabix for breakfast, soup for lunch and pork and aubergine stir fry for dinner. Yoghurt as a snack.
i have probably had too much salt though
think I will have a look at conometer. I do find logging everything I eat a faff

SingaporeSlinky · 22/01/2023 20:16

Thanks again @greenspaces4peace

Anyone got a good homemade soup recipe? DH likes a chunky soup, not smooth, so I’m thinking maybe chicken and lots of veg, but when I’ve tried before they’ve been very bland.

greenspaces4peace · 23/01/2023 05:21

13,000 steps, 45 minutes of exercise, 2L of water, and my vitamins.
guests arrived about 3:45pm for coffee, dinner at 5:30 and everyone home by 7:15.
totally totally pleased to be tucked in bed by 9:20. Linen in the wash and dishes done!
not too much damage on the food choices either 😊

AutisticLegoLover · 23/01/2023 06:51

Good morning everyone, here's to a good week!
Porridge and tea for breakfast
Probably yogurt and berries for lunch.
No idea about dinner-maybe pasta.

Allthegoodnamestakken · 23/01/2023 08:29

Hello All
Back from my crazy few weeks of work travel and miraculously I am back down to 65.9kg so that's almost all the Christmas weight gone already 😁
I can't remember who I was talking to about eating better when travelling for work but thankyou for the tips because it really made me think about what I was eating instead of just thinking this is the situation and I can't change it.
I have finally shook off the last of the awful chest infection I had before Christmas so looking forward to getting back to running and cross fit and building my strength back up.
Menu today is
Lunch- Fruit, Museli and protein yogurt
Dinner- Flat breads with roasted vegetables and homemade sweet chilli sauce
I have eaten a lot of meat over the last few weeks so planning a few more vegetarian days over the next few weeks if anyone has any tasty recipes to share

Ninjachicken · 23/01/2023 08:48

Morning all, snuck on the scales this morning and I have put on 400g since wow! It is so de-motivating and depressing. I have not been snacking, not had wine, really been trying. It does make me think what’s the point but I know that’s not the right attitude
I just need to keep plodding on. Sigh.
does this mean I need to restrict even further? I get really hangry so I do have to be careful, otherwise my poor family 😁

TheRealHousewife · 23/01/2023 10:29

I know I'm being a rubbish contributor to these threads, I'm just so busy atm 😬

But selfishly I did just want to pop by & note that I've been consistently my username through Jan. I was 8s 12.5lb over the weekend which I haven't seen since Feb 2019, so almost 4 years.

Even better than that, my fitness is amazing. I've been doing tons of walking & I'm back to racing about. I was running up deep Tube escalators last week, not bad for someone who turns 50 the year after next! The amount of energy I have seems limitless. I'm convinced it's the massive reduction in my sugar intake. I can't believe how lethargic it used to make me.

I'm not thinking about food/treats all the time either, I seem to have got out of that mental zone. I think also that knowing I can have some if I want some is enough to give me the control back. I ate out 5 nights in a row in London but didn't then take chocolate or puddings back home each evening, which made all the difference. And I didn't stop moving. I think now I've lost all the excess fat I have nothing stored which means I'm burning up what I put in & nothing is hanging around!

It was great to be able to go into my favourite clothes shops & try things on & look good in them & not be downhearted because they didn't flatter, or they showed up lumps & bumps.

I'm feeling the best I have in years 🙂

Good luck everybody - if I can do it anyone can!

SingaporeSlinky · 23/01/2023 11:18

@8stone13 that’s fab! I am still aiming for your username but a way to go yet.
How did you manage during December and Christmas? My weight was already creeping back up in November, and I was so busy I got completely out of the good habits I’d built up. Now I’m half a stone up, so need to lose it again.
I’m the same as you though, once the weight starts shifting, I find myself happily walking up escalators, feeling very smug 😆

SingaporeSlinky · 23/01/2023 11:25

@Ninjachicken try not to let it get you down, my weight can go up and down on various days, weeks even. As long as the general trend is downwards, that’s the main thing. There’s not usually a completely straight line. Use it as motivation to carry on with what you’ve been doing, it will be making a difference! I’ve had weeks where I’ve been the exact same weight every day, then all of a sudden I’ll drop a whole pound or more overnight, it makes no sense but does happen.
I’m not up to speed with everyone’s methods, but if you want to post your typical day’s meals, maybe we can help?

ImALittlePea · 23/01/2023 11:26

Morning all!

Well... The less said about this weekend, the better! It was just so carby. I got all mixed up with plans yesterday which meant I had lunch at home as normal, and then had an unplanned and unexpected (and delicious) late lunch at a family members. And THEN DH wanted takeaway, so we got delivery pizza. Even though we definitely didn't need it. So that's four meals instead of my normal two, as I also had breakfast in bed FFS🤦‍♀️🤣

Anyway... What's done is done. A healthy week awaits. I'm fully expecting to tip back over 10st when I weigh on Friday, but will do what I can this week to undo all the excess. DH and I have booked a child-free night away at the end of March (it's our Christmas present to each other), followed by my birthday and then a big birthday for DH. I have about two months to get a few more lb off and start to tone and build in exercise (yes, I know I keep saying it, I have seriously misplaced my motivation), so I'm not despairing just yet.

Plan for today:
Lunch - cup-a-soup with normal extras 😁
Dinner - baked potato, beans, cheese, sweetcorn, salad

NO SNACKS. Just tea and water.

ginsparkles · 23/01/2023 12:27

Happy Monday everyone!

A very carb heavy weekend for me too, but loads of walking so hoping that helped offset the damage!!

Today is the reset! On the menu is:

Lunch Tomato and herb soup with 2 x ryvitta's, yoghurt and fruit
Dinner Spinach and ricotta pasta bake.

Had a cereal bar mid morning. And have extra fruit for snacks.

Ninjachicken · 23/01/2023 13:05

@SingaporeSlinky thank you so much. I know I need to keep going but it is so depressing when the scales go the wrong way!!
today I have had a banana and almond milk smoothie with added oats. I think around 300 calories. No breakfast but I do find that difficult, especially if I have not eaten much the night before. I may just need get used to it. I see a lot of people on here only eat twice a day and don’t snack.
Tonight I may have an omelette I think.
my dinnner last night was Chinese stir fry so the salt may not have been my friend this morning
I love this thread, it is really helping me so thank you everyone 💕

SingaporeSlinky · 23/01/2023 13:12

Ah yes, whenever I eat Chinese food my weight stays high for about 3 days afterwards!

I try to do Intermittent Fasting, so I don’t eat between about 6pm and 11am. Obviously the main point is to give your digestive system a rest for a longer period, but the added benefit is that you tend to just skip breakfast, with helps with overall calorie intake. I end up having an early lunch, and then normal dinner, so if I can avoid snacks, it gives me 1100 cals to split between 2 meals, which is easily done, and a couple of coffees.

AutisticLegoLover · 23/01/2023 13:40

I couldn't skip breakfast. I feel so ill if I do and get faint. Mornings are my hungry time and I have porridge 7.15-7.45 ish and then crumpets at 10-10.30ish. Both with a cup of tea. I've had a big ass bowl of yogurt and berries for lunch. 200g yogurt (yep the type with sugar) and 100g strawberries and 100g raspberries. Fruit is costing me a fortune but I'm someone who has to be in the mood for something to eat it so I'm making the most of it. Some people manage on 2 bigger meals, I prefer 4 small ones. You have to see what works best for you.

I've been busy cleaning and tidying today. I'm disgusted with the accumulation of dust. Where does it all come from?! And Lego. I'm sure that multiplies or walks itself out of its rightful place. I love Lego but it needs to know its place.

Allthegoodnamestakken · 23/01/2023 13:56

@ImALittlePea sounds like you had a lovely weekend even if it was carb heavy!
@Ninjachicken I also retain a lot of weight when i've eaten a lot of salt, usually comes off really easily the next week. I am one of the breakfast skippers but I have never been a breakfast person I do however eat it on days when I need to be active in the morning or get up very early. My breakfast skipping only really works on days I work from home and pretty much go from bed to desk at 8am.
@AutisticLegoLover I think dust breeds, its the only explanation for the fact that even though I hoover pretty much daily its always dusty!

SingaporeSlinky · 23/01/2023 14:01

@AutisticLegoLover yes absolutely, I wasn’t saying IF works for everybody, was just explaining my method. Very much depends on what your day entails too. When I worked, I couldn’t have lasted all morning without eating breakfast. But now I’m a SAHM, I go to the gym after school drop off, and I find it easier not to eat before a workout. I’ve got used to the routine.

With you on the berries, I love raspberries and strawberries with my Greek yoghurt, but they’re so expensive out of season. I eat lots of fat-free Greek yoghurt because although we’re usually told that ‘fat free’ means they replace it with lots of sugars etc. in this case, I believe it’s just strained more. The ones I get are very high in protein, more so than the full-fat version. And it’s the high protein aspect I struggle with, when only having 2 meals.

jellybean007 · 23/01/2023 14:28

Hello everyone, I've been following and joining in with healthy eating changes but only plucked up the courage to weigh myself last week and what a horrible shock. I have 20kg to lose 🙄😥Heaviest I've ever been and heavier than I thought.

I know why, 2022 was super stressful and big sleep problems but it feels like a mountain.

I'm in though. Got to do this. I'm trying to stick with 3 nutritious meals, lots of water, no snacks. That'll work, right?

Thanks for all the positivity on here, good to know we're not doing this alone.

Cloudberries123 · 23/01/2023 14:32

Checking in to keep myself accountable really.

Carby, overeating weekend for me as well. Meals went upside-down partly due to having to go to an unexpected funeral and snacking at unusual times.

Today I've had white bread at BOTH breakfast and lunch due to convenience, and two sugary coffees, and just feeling very emotional about food in general. I can't really explain it.

Breakfast - toastie, coffee

Work snacks - banana, satsuma, Bear fruit yoyo

Lunch - cheese sandwich, coffee

Snack - tea, pack of Nairns choc chip oat biscuits (40% less sugar but still so moreish that I've nearly finished the box in 2 days...)

Dinner - tbc

Would love a kind or encouraging word today as I just feel down and like I'm destined to always be overweight.

ImALittlePea · 23/01/2023 15:05

To be fair, it was a lovely weekend @Allthegoodnamestakken (good to see you back btw - and well done for not letting the travel schedule derail you!) Some of our closest friends have just come back from a long stretch of travelling so it was insanely good to get together again. Good for the heart and soul, not for the waistline; how often is that the way of things though?!

I'm with you @SingaporeSlinky I don't tend to eat until midday and haven't since the start of last year. I always made myself have breakfast as it was 'the most important meal of the day', until I really thought about it and read a little about the benefits of IF. I never enjoyed breakfast, and I find I'm less prone to snacking now I don't have it. Different horses, different courses though, as they say.

Oh @Cloudberries123 sending some kindness your way! It's so easy to do. For me, it's tiredness and hormones that impact on my ability to stay focused, even more so when things have slid over a weekend (which generally they do at weekends over here). Can you pull together a low carb dinner for tonight to help you feel a bit better mentally about things today? Remember, it's a long journey, and we're all going to have days where we can't seem to do what we want nutritionally. Tomorrow is a new one, you can and will get there ❤️

SingaporeSlinky · 23/01/2023 16:04

@Cloudberries123 please be kind to yourself. A funeral is not a time not to be exhausting yourself mentally, worrying about a diet. Sometimes we are all busy, all have times when we absolutely need to have convenience food. And as for today’s meals, well it’s just one day, and to be fair, doesn’t even sound that bad. 2 white bread sandwiches isn’t a disaster, and you’ve still managed to snack on healthy fruit, so it could have been a lot worse. I agree with @ImALittlePea , unless you’ve already meal prepped for tonight, could you try and end the day with a healthy meal? At least then you won’t feel like the day was a write-off?
Tomorrow is a new day!

TheRealHousewife · 23/01/2023 18:09

Hi @8stone13 nice to see you 😬 Don’t worry about not posting frequently… sometimes life just gets in the way x

@Cloudberries123 sending a hug and a kind word. Do what you need to do to feel ok and get through. We will all be able to empathise as it happens to each of us at one time or another. Be kind to yourself ❤️
